Background

The government of the UK has accelerated the speed of deployment of
zero-emission bus (ZEBs) to achieve its net-zero ambition by 2050, promote
sustainable mobility and create green jobs.

It has committed to supporting the acquisition of 4,000 ZEBs for England,
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by the end of 2024. Several initiatives
including the National Bus Strategy, the ZEBRA scheme and the Scottish Zero
Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZEB) have been launched in the past one year to
drive this transition. It has also announced plans to end the sale of all
combustion engine buses and minibuses between 2025 and 2032.

Local authorities (including county, unitary authorities and combined
authorities), public transport authorities and bus service operators have also
set targets and goals to decarbonise the local bus fleet. Coventry plans to
transition to an all-electric fleet by 2025. Transport for London aims to have a
fully-electric bus fleet by 2034. Private bus operators including Arriva,
FirstGroup, Go Ahead, National Express and Stagecoach have also pledged to buy
only ultra-low buses or ZEBs from 2025 onwards.

The recent policy initiatives and plans are creating a tremendous momentum and
demand for scaling up existing infrastructure of OEMs and infrastructure
providers. They are also creating demand for new technologies, solutions and
tools for charging/fuelling infrastructure, digitalisation, AI, data analysis,
workforce management, fleet maintenance, and so on.

That said, the successful transition requires a clear and consistent national
policy, a long-term revenue assurance scheme, and the provision of more
high-speed electrical connections to provide charging infrastructure,
particularly in more rural areas. Aside from directly funding the procurement of
ZEBs and associated infrastructure, revenue-raising schemes introduced by local
authorities will also encourage the shift to public transport and help fund
decarbonisation efforts.

Given the opportunities, Global Mass Transit is organizing a virtual conference
on Clean Buses UK on October 13, 2022 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm BST.

Mission

The mission of the conference is to discuss the UK government’s plan, programmes
and funding to transition to a zero-emission bus (ZEB) fleet, the way forward
for local authorities, public transport authorities (PTAs) and public transport
operators (PTOs), best practices in transitioning to a ZEB fleet, experience so
far and the lessons learned. It will cover plans and opportunities for
deployment of electric and hydrogen-fuelled buses and related infrastructure.
The conference will also showcase new technologies, tools and solutions.

The conference will bring together policymakers, transit agencies, provincial
and local government officials, OEMs, suppliers of bus components, technology
providers, energy providers, charging solution suppliers and battery
manufacturers, hydrogen-fueling infrastructure providers, funding agencies,
consultants, researchers, and academicians.

The one-day virtual conference will have eight live sessions, panel discussions
and case studies, with a wide array of experts providing valuable insights and
actionable advice. The agenda will cover the UK government programmes and
funding as well as plans of cities, PTAs and PTOs to deploy clean fuel buses in
the UK. It will also highlight offerings of leading manufacturers and suppliers
as well as the latest technological developments and solutions to improve the
customer experience.

There will be a dedicated session on the experiences of leading PTAs and PTOs in
the deployment of ZEBs. This will provide an opportunity to learn how to deploy
ZEBs and charging/fueling infrastructure, mobilize funding, and manage
stakeholder expectations.
