NEWS, TRENDS AND INSIGHTS

Phishing, Whaling, Smishing…. No matter how you spell it, the goal is the same.

Scammers are fishing for your information. Whether is with a text, am email, or
even the dreaded pop-up, social engineering attackers are looking for your
information.  Often the victim receives a message that appears to have been sent
by a known contact or organization. The attack is then carried out either when
the victim clicks on a malicious file attachment or clicks on a hyperlink
connecting them to a malicious website. In either case, the attacker's objective
is to install malware on the user's device or direct them to a fake website.
Fake websites are set up to trick victims into divulging personal and financial
information, such as passwords account IDs or credit card details.

Other phishing attempts can be made via phone, where the attacker poses as an
employee phishing for personal information. These messages can use an
AI-generated voice of the victim's manager or other authority for the attacker
to further deceive the victim.

 * The message uses subdomains, misspelled URLs -- also known
as typosquatting -- or otherwise suspicious URLs.
 * The recipient uses a Gmail or other public email address rather than a
   corporate email address.
 * The message is written to invoke fear or a sense of urgency.
 * The message includes a request to verify personal information, such as
   financial details or a password.
 * The message is poorly written and has spelling or grammatical errors

Having security controls and antivirus software can drastically slowdown the
amount of Phishing that reaches you, but your continued vigilance is a must.  Do
not click on any links and never download an app as a result from one of the
contacts.  Multi-function authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in
to your accounts if they do get your username and password, so always opt-in to
this option if it is available.

Remember, ServU will never ask you for personal financial information such as
usernames/passwords, PIN numbers, credit card numbers, etc., via a text message,
email, or phone call. If you are ever worried you may be scammed, please call
us! It’s better to be safe than sorry.
