OUR DAILY ELVIS HAS ENDED

Posted on August 16, 2020 by dykewriter

in 1977, on this day, Elvis Presley took enough pills to not have to be Elvis
Presley anymore.

in 2020, Benjamin Keough took his own life owing to the pressure of being his
grandson

in an era where “elvis impersonator” is a career choice on tax forms

and many stars began that way directly

while I no longer will update or correct errors and omissions

enjoy the main posts from the first year this blog began in october

I read (past tense) a lot of Elvis books. These are mine: the binders on the
bottom contain magazines.

There were two that really stood out, because they were not really about Elvis,
but about how we were and are about Elvis.

The Personal Journey of a Young Man re-creating his family vacations as a
college road trip, lead to his realization how how embedded Elvis Presley is in
American culture, the from lowest tacky to the artistic perfection: and mostly:
the media.

It is from this book that the “give us this day, our daily Elvis” mantra chant
acknowledgement of encountering Elvis as one goes about one’s day:

CRAVEN INDIFFERENCE VS OBSCENITY

Two weeks after it cracked the Billboard R&B Top Ten, Chuck Berry‘s “Maybellene”
enters the Pop chart at #23. It will peak at #5 and is now considered one of the
pioneering Rock ‘n’ Roll singles..

on Tour with The Browns, Elvis performed at the Baseball Park, Gladewater,
Texas.

August 10, 1956

Elvis performed at the Florida Theater, Jacksonville, Florida at 3.30, 7.00 and
9.00 p.m. After the first show Elvis was warned by judge Marion Gooding to tone
down his act, which Elvis would only wiggle his pinkie finger as the judge did
on that stage and in the 1968 TV special.

MEMORIES OF ELVIS’ SCANDALOUS FIRST COAST SHOW | ELVIS ARTICLES

FLORIDA FRONTIERS “ELVIS PRESLEY IN FLORIDA, AUGUST 1956” | FLORIDA …

from SCotty Moore’s site:

In Jacksonville they were scheduled to play six shows over a two day period at
the Florida Theater. When they arrived they were greeted with unsigned warrants
prepared by Juvenile Court Judge Marion Gooding charging Elvis with impairing
the morals of minors. The judge told them he was upset over what had happened
during their last visit (hysterical fans nearly ripped Elvis’ clothes off) and
he wanted to prevent a recurrence. If Elvis did those hip-gyrating movements for
which he was famous, Gooding warned, he would sign the warrants and Elvis would
be taken straight to jail.

With threats of criminal prosecution, Elvis and his management arranged for
legal representation when he performed at the theatre. A young attorney by the
name of Clarence Wood was hired to represent him. Clarence sat just off stage
and was there just in case Judge Gooding decided to issue an arrest warrant at
the concert and took the assignment in stride noting that Elvis was just a young
man trying to entertain his fans

When they did the concerts, the police were out in force, armed with movie
cameras. Elvis did what he was told, but all that nervous energy had to come out
in some way. “That’s where the curled lip and the little finger thing really got
started”, said Scotty. “He stood there flat footed and did the whole show.” The
judge was delighted with the performance. Later, Elvis told reporters he was
unhappy about the controversy. “I don’t do no dirty body movements,” he told a
reporter

after being found with four 19 year old women, (3 of them white), in various

Disciples of cult leader Charles Manson entered the home of movie director Roman
Polanski and brutally murdered Polanski’s wife, actress Sharon Tate, as well as
director Voityck Frykowski, hair stylist Jay Sebring, student Steven Parent and
coffee heiress Abigail Folger. The Elvis connection to this is that Memphis
Mafia member, Larry Geller had worked for Jay Sebring in the hair dressing
business. Plus Elvis was often the target of threats, he was as impacted as
other wealthy famous and not famous people were.

Elvis Presley’s single “Clean Up Your Own Back Yard” hit #35 in the U.S. Written
by Mac Davis and Billy Strange it was released as a 7″ single in 1969 with “The
Fair Is Moving On” on the B-side, but not featured on any studio album. It
reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #21 on the UK Singles Chart. The song
was from the soundtrack of the film The Trouble with Girls, and was later
included on the budget RCA Camden album Almost In Love.

Although The Trouble with Girls is set in the 1920s, several lyrics within this
song are anachronistic for the era, such as a reference to “armchair
quarterbacks”, a term not coined until the advent of television sports
broadcasting decades later.

BOY FROM THE BAND VS BOY BAND

Posted on August 6, 2020 by dykewriter

This day in BeatleMania (as opposed to Elvisfandemonium)

August 6, 1960

The Beatles went to evaluate drummer Pete Best at the Casbah Coffee Club in
Liverpool, England. Best was with the group the Blackjacks and was the son of
Casbah owner Mona Best.

August 6, 1963

In the evening at Studio A of the Columbia Recording Studio, New York City, Bob
Dylan recorded the first session produced by Tom Wilson for the album The Times
They Are A-Changin’. Dylan’s third studio album was the first collection to
feature only original compositions, the title track being one of Dylan’s most
famous. The album consists mostly of stark, sparsely-arranged story songs
concerning issues such as racism, poverty, and social change.

The Beatles arrived in Jersey in the Channel Islands, where they spent the day
go-carting and relaxing by the pool at The Revere Hotel before playing the first
of four nights at the Springfield Ballroom. Some fans had found out where they
were staying, but they were happy to chat and be photographed with them.

August 6, 1965

The Beatles released their fifth album in the UK, the soundtrack to Help!, their
second film. The US release took place on August 13. The album was produced by
George Martin. It contains fourteen songs in its original British form. Seven of
these, including the singles “Help!” and “Ticket to Ride”, appeared in the film
and took up the first side of the vinyl album. The second side contained seven
other releases including “Yesterday.”

August 6, 1966

Yesterday…and Today was the #1 album again from the Beatles, holding off
Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra and Aftermath by the Rolling Stones.

Elvis Presley’s single “Love Letters” hit #6 in the U.K.

August 6, 1967

The Who spend two days at Talentmasters Studio in New York. Al Kooper joins the
band on organ to record two versions of “Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand.” One is
released in the U.S. on the B-side of “I Can See For Miles,” while the other
remains in the vaults until the 1995 edition of The Who Sell Out. Also recorded
is a studio version of “Summertime Blues,” an organ overdub on “Relax,”
performed by Pete, and new vocals to replace the guide vocals on “I Can See For
Miles.”

So interesting.

they were the boy band that best replicated the Elvis phenom.

Nappy K

Whenever I see old pictures like this of Pete Best with the Beatles my immediate
thought is they kicked him out because the group because he was too good looking
and they were worried he would take all there girls .

I have no idea why they actually kicked him out btw that’s just the initial
thought I have when seeing old Pics of him cause you gotta admit he is (or at
least was when he was young) a really good looking dude.12 Replies

that is pretty much why that happened. all eyes go to him, Ringo made John and
george cuter. the group effect.

also Pete looks a bit like Stu Sutcliffe that danger vibe.

Oh wow that’s seriously the reason I had no idea that’s crazy that just a random
thought I had was the actual reason that happened  .

Also I would of gone with James Dean in the comparison but Stu works too.

reminding them of stu might have been a reason too. he died young, eh

Yeah wasn’t he only like 22 or something like that I know he died super young
come to think of it James Dean did too.

yes. either a brain injury – Stu had the shit kicked out of him by German Teddy
Boys, he quite cause of migraines and might have had a brain tumour. His
girlfriend created The Mop Top

It’s so sad dude such great talents always seem to die so young .

yeah, Dean’s death almost resulted in Rebel without a Cause to be shelved
instead of released. Giant had to film around it. Rock Hudson and Dean did not
get along, very different acting styles.

Dean was going to do King Creole as a boxer a movie remake. instead it went to
Elvis and the role was turned into a nightclub

ELVIS’ DOUBLE LIFE: D/L

Andy Warhol, who makes his mark on the music world as manager for the The Velvet
Underground and designer of the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album cover, is
born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Blogger Nina Notes: Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame quote was an accurate
prediction, I wonder how many think it is a good thing or a bad thing.

Andy Warhol and His “Elvis Presley” SeriesWarhol has featured Elvis Presley in
at least 22 pieces of art. Next week, one of his paintings, “Triple Elvis (Ferus
Type)”, will be up for auction.

Elvis’ appearance at this “12th Annual White River Carnival” elicits an
indignant letter from local promoter Ed Lyon, who writes to the Colonel that
Elvis was guilty of unprofessional behavior, told off–color jokes, and “stormed
off stage” after singing just four songs, thereby “ruin[ing]” the show. Lyon
demands an “adjustment,” and the Colonel swiftly complies with a refund of $50,
writing Bob Neal a scathing letter on August 22 about the necessity of
establishing professional standards. Elvis is “young, inexperienced, and it
takes a lot more than a couple of hot records in a certain territory to become a
big–name artist,” the Colonel lectures Neal, whom he blames both implicitly and
explicitly for this foul–up in the education of a young artist.*

August 6, 1956

Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Frankie Lymon and Connie Francis (singing for actress
Tuesday Weld) began work on the movie Rock, Rock, Rock!

p.m.

The other acts were Frank Connors, Phil Maraquin, Nancy Ford, The Jordanaires,
and The Headliners

From the review” The singing did not seem to be what the teen-agers particularly
were interested in, for every time the sultry sideburned singer would bump his
hip, the frenzy would mount. Often he would just shimmy without singing, without
playing the guitar. Several times he clutched the curtain as he shook and once
got down on his hands and knees, his long hair tossed in his face, and did his
bumps toward the audience from that position.“

June Juanico, 18-year-old girl who is accompanying him on his tour, brought him
a paper cup of water. While she was getting the water, I asked, “Is June just
one of your 25 regulars?”  Elvis looked disgusted and said the press made it up.
“She means more to me than any other girl has,” he said, “but I haven’t known
her very long.”3

Guard dog mauls Elvis’s teddy in rampage

On Tuesday night the doberman pinscher guard dog, after six years’ blameless
service, went berserk: within minutes Mabel, a 1909 German-made Steiff teddy
bear once owned by Elvis Presley, more recently the pride and joy of an English
aristocrat, lay mortally wounded.

Barney went on to rampage through hundreds of rare teddies, all on loan to
Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset, and so valuable that the insurers had insisted on
a guard dog to protect the premises at night. The aftermath, according to
shocked staff, was appalling: shattered limbs, gouged eyes, ears torn off, and
pools of sawdust everywhere.

“Up to 100 bears were involved in the massacre,” Daniel Medley, general manager
of Wookey Hole Caves, said last night. “It was a dreadful scene.”

the tour staff and bands, and Parker took half, leaving Elvis to pay all the
taxes.

MUSIC AND LEGAL ISSUES

Daily Elvis July 29

July 29, 1960

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rejected proposals that it set up
specific controls over radio and TV programs.

1963

July 29, 1963

Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘(You’re The) Devil In
Disguise’. His 14th UK No.1.

In 1963, when the song was debuted to a British audience on the BBC television
show Juke Box Jury, the celebrity guest John Lennon voted the song “a miss”
stating on the new song that Elvis Presley was “like Bing Crosby now.”

With the US charts full of Hot Rod songs, Capitol Records sends disc jockeys a
list of car terms and phrases to help promote The Beach Boys‘ “Little Deuce
Coupe”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwgGuadsqyoBeach Boys “Little Deuce
Coupe”http://beachboyssongs.com

Of all the early Beach Boys songs, Little Deuce Coupe was probably the one most
responsible for elevating the bands status and increasing popularity from that
of a distinguished surf group to a band that now featured songs about cars …

Lyrics: “Little Deuce Coupe”
Songwriter(s) Brian Wilson & Roger Christian

Little Deuce Coupe, you don’t know what I got
(You don’t know what I got)
Little Deuce Coupe, you don’t know what I’ve got

Well, I’m not braggin’ babe so don’t put me down
(Deuce Coupe)
But I’ve got the fastest set of wheels in town
(Deuce Coupe)
When something comes up to me he don’t even try
(Deuce Coupe)
‘Cause if it had a set of wings man I know she could fly

She’s my little Deuce Coupe
You don’t know what I got
Little Deuce Coupe
You don’t know what I got

Just a little Deuce Coupe with a flathead mill
(Deuce Coupe)
But she’ll walk a Thunderbird like she’s standin’ still

She’s ported and relieved and she’s strokedShow Morewww.youtube.com

Yeah, love it,A “deuce” is a car produced by Ford in 1932 (the “2” in 1932 is
the “deuce”). Most of them had big V8 engines and were popular for drag racing.
They weren’t just coupes – they also came as roadsters and sedans.  Mike Love
sang lead on this track.
The line at the end of the song, “There’s one more thing, I got the pink slip
daddy,” means that the singer won a race with his Little Deuce Coupe, earning
him his opponent’s car. The “pink slip” is the vehicle’s registration, so
“racing for pink slips” means the winner gets the other car.

yeah. . I know.

deuce is also Canadian slang for poop eh.

Yep,Throughout history, artists have been causing controversy, attempting to
subvert the dominant structures in society, and provoking people to see life
differently,and that’s the point!
