If you read all of the legal pundits, all of the legal scholars today, there's not one that I see that said, this is a case that should be brought or tried. It's a scam. It's a political witch hunt." Trump went on to say, "I'm not in Georgia or Florida or North Carolina, campaigning like I should be. It's perfect for the radical left Democrats. That's exactly what they want. This is about election interference. That's all it's about. Thank you very much." THE TRUMP TRIAL WILL CONTINUE ON TUESDAY 4 hours ago 23:34 CEST By Jack Queen and Luc Cohen Former U.S. President Donald Trump turns to face the audience in this courtroom sketch. REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool The court adjourned until 9:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) on Tuesday. Trump must attend the trial, which is expected to last through May. The judge denied a request for Donald Trump to miss a trial session to attend a U.S. Supreme Court session in Washington next week, where his lawyers will argue he should not face separate criminal charges of election interference. Lawyers from both sides will seek to impanel 12 jurors and six alternates. Choosing a jury from a pool of people from heavily Democratic Manhattan could take several days, to be followed by opening statements and testimony from a parade of potentially riveting witnesses, including Trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, and adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump has denied any such relationship with Daniels and has pleaded not guilty. Though the case is regarded by some legal experts as the least consequential of the four criminal prosecutions he faces, it is the only one guaranteed to go to trial before the Nov. 5 election. Read through our day's coverage here and we'll be back with more live coverage tomorrow. The judge instructed potential jurors to avoid news coverage about the case and not to do any of their own research about it. SMILE! TRUMP GREETS THE JURY POOL 5 hours ago 22:13 CEST A sketch of Donald Trump smiles to the jury pool. April 15, 2024. REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool JUROR QUESTIONING BEGINS 5 hours ago 21:59 CEST By Jack Queen and Luc Cohen At least 50 jurors were dismissed after saying they could not be impartial in judging Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican candidate for president. Others were excused who said they could not serve for other reasons. One woman was excused after saying she had strong opinions about Trump that would prevent her from being fair and impartial. Several people so far have cited The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and CNN as news sources. One woman said she got her news from Tiktok. A prospective juror leaving the courtroom was heard in the hallway saying, "I just couldn't do it." Lawyers from both sides took notes on each answer from prospective jurors to prepare for their follow-up questions, which they may not have the opportunity to ask until Tuesday. Choosing a jury from a pool of people from heavily Democratic Manhattan could take several days, to be followed by opening statements and testimony from a parade of potentially riveting witnesses, including Trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, and adult film star Stormy Daniels. TO FIND 12 FAIR AND IMPARTIAL JURORS IS NO EASY TASK, SAID A FORMER FEDERAL PROSECUTOR 6 hours ago 21:40 CEST The process of finding a jury for this case "is not going to be easy," Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told Reuters. "Judge Merchan is probably going to go through hundreds, maybe hundreds of jurors to find 12 who can be fair and impartial. Everyone in this country has an opinion of the former president," Rahmani said. A NEW YORK THRONG DESCENDED ON THE COURTHOUSE FOR THE TRIAL 6 hours ago 21:36 CEST A Trump supporter waving a flag in New York City, U.S., April 15, 2024. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Minutes before 9 a.m., both Catherine Nestor, a New York City social worker late for a jury duty summons, and Donald Trump, the first former U.S. president to be put on trial, were heading for Manhattan's criminal courthouse, our colleague Jonathan Allen writes. Trump was in the back of a large black Chevrolet Suburban with bullet-proof windows, riding downtown in a motorcade from his penthouse in his Fifth Avenue skyscraper. Nestor was on foot, joining a throng of New Yorkers blocked by a maze of metal police barricades. "What's the delay for?" asked a New Yorker in the crowd, a probation officer in the courthouse complex. "A big trial," replied a uniformed security officer for the state court system. Behind him, police car lights flashed in the warm spring sunshine, reporters and photographers milled about, a few Trump supporters stood by enormous Trump flags and at least one man trilled out patriotic melodies on a flute, all bracing for a sign of Trump's arrival. Nestor, 28, did not know for which case she was in the jury pool, but if it turned out to be the Trump case she felt she would have to be dismissed. "I'm biased," Nestor said, imagining how quickly her turn at jury selection would go: "'Do you think he's guil-', 'Yes!'" Choosing a jury from a pool of people in heavily Democratic Manhattan was expected to take several days. Lawyers for Trump and prosecutors will seek to uncover biases and any political agendas before impaneling 12 jurors and six alternates. QUESTIONS FOR THE JURORS 6 hours ago 21:27 CEST The questionnaire begins by asking basic biographical information about where prospective jurors live, their marital status, occupation and hobbies. Panelists were also asked to list their sources of news . Trump followed along intently with his own copy of the questionnaire as the first juror gave her answers. SOME JURORS LEFT, OTHERS WERE CALLED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS 6 hours ago 21:25 CEST By Jack Queen At least 50 jurors, more than half the 96 who were ready, were dimissed after saying they could not be fair or impartial. The judge began calling individual jurors to answer questions from the 42-point questionnaire they were given, many of which call for yes or no answers. Lawyers will be able to ask follow up questions later. TRUMP TOOK TO TRUTH SOCIAL TO ALLEGE A 'WITCH HUNT' 6 hours ago 21:12 CEST Screenshot of https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump Trump's Truth Social post kept up a steady flow of posts amplifying the former president's allegations about his trial throughout the day, our colleague Doina Chiacu writes. That includes an image of a bright red square with WITCH HUNT emblazoned on it and another of a Trump silhouette - apparently waving from a plane - with the lines "This is not a prosecution. It's a persecution." JUDGE CITES POSSIBLE WITNESSES 6 hours ago 21:05 CEST Justice Juan Merchan gave jurors a brief introduction of the facts of the case before describing their obligations under the law should they be chosen. He then listed witnesses expected to be called at trial, including Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen, David Pecker, Trump's adult children, Rudy Giuliani, forrmer Trump presidential staffer Hope Hicks and Trump's former chief of staff Reince Priebus. Trump sat back in his chair with eyes closed and arms folded at his chest, occasionally shifting in his seat as Merchan spoke . JURORS ASKED IF THEY CANNOT BE FAIR 6 hours ago 21:04 CEST By Jack Queen The judge asked prospective jurors to raise their hands if they believed they could not be fair and impartial. 'YOU ALONE ARE THE JUDGES OF THE FACTS,' JUDGE TELLS PROSPECTIVE JURORS 6 hours ago 20:54 CEST By Jack Queen "You alone are the judges of the facts," Justice Juan Merchan told the first group of prospective jurors, adding that his only role was to instruct them on the law. Merchan explained that in order to convict, jurors must find that Trump is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, not that he is "probably" guilty. He said fair jurors must be impartial and set aside any bias or personal attitudes and stereotypes about the defendant or the case. Merchan included "political orientation" when rattling off the various demographic considerations jurors must set aside, including race, religion and gender. POTENTIAL JURORS IN COURT 6 hours ago 20:46 CEST By Jack Queen Justice Juan Merchan is now giving the first batch of jurors introductory instructions, which he said would take roughly 30 minutes . Many prospective panelists who had just filed into Merchan’s courtroom and were seated in the back rows stretched their necks to get a look at Trump once in their seats. One woman in the second row from the back on the right giggled and put her hand over her mouth, looking at the person seated next to her with raised eyebrows. There was no discernible reaction from potential jurors when Merchan said the name of the case. Trump stood and turned around when he was introduced as the defendant, giving the prospective jurors a little tight-lipped smirk. JURORS ARE READY, JUDGE SAYS 7 hours ago 20:30 CEST By Jack Queen Justice Juan Merchan said 96 jurors are ready to come in. There's a total of about 200 jurors physically here today, he said. SHOULD TRUMP BE ALLOWED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT? 7 hours ago 20:29 CEST In Bryant Park, New York, Christopher McKenzie told our colleagues Hussein Al Waaile and Roselle Chen that Trump shouldn't be allowed to run: "Because the truth is, any upstanding citizen, whether it's a minor infraction or whatever, you pay your time." Jennifer Torneden agreed - but said he shouldn't be the only one barred from high office: "I do have a huge problem with that and I don't think he should be president, but I equally also felt Bill Clinton shouldn't be president". TRUMP WAS SEEMINGLY EXASPERATED AFTER THE JUDGE LEFT THE COURTROOM 7 hours ago 20:05 CEST By Jack Queen In a brief exchange with his lawyer Todd Blanche after Justice Juan Merchan stepped away to his chambers, Trump threw aside his hands in exasperation and appeared to point forcefully in the direction of the bench several times. Trump, continuing to gesture energetically to Blanche, briefly turned away and let out a sigh of clear frustration and shook his head THE JUDGE SAID HE MAY LET JURORS ADDRESS THE BENCH PRIVATELY 7 hours ago 19:48 CEST Before bringing in the first batch of prospective jurors, Merchan said he would allow them to address the bench and lawyers privately if they prefer not to answer certain questions publicly. Doing so would entail clearing the courtroom of reporters and sending other members of the jury pool to a separate room, Merchan said. “There’s not a whole lot of privacy here,” he said, adding that he wants prospective jurors to be “100% open.” There will be 96 prospective jurors in the first panel, Merchan said. JUSTICE MERCHAN NOW SAYS HE WILL CONSIDER THE PROSECUTORS' REQUEST TO FINE TRUMP ON APRIL 23 7 hours ago 19:44 CEST Merchan scheduled a hearing on Trump's alleged gag order violations for April 23. Earlier he had scheduled the hearing for April 24. He gave Trump’s lawyers until April 19 to submit a written response. TRUMP IS BACK IN THE COURTROOM 8 hours ago 19:37 CEST He didn't answer shouted questions but gave a thumbs up. WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FIRST MORNING IN COURT? 8 hours ago 19:24 CEST Sketch of Donald Trump entering a New York court. April 15, 2024. REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool New York prosecutors asked a judge at the start of Donald Trump's criminal hush money trial to fine him and remind him he could go to jail for violating a gag order about potential witnesses. They spoke on the start of a historic trial, the first of a former U.S. president, which stems from a 2016 hush-money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels . With Trump seated at the defense table in his signature blue suit and red tie, prosecutors cited Trump's criticism of witnesses, court officials and others over the years, Luc Cohen and Jack Queen reported. Prosecutors asked Justice Juan Merchan to fine Trump $1,000 each for each of three social-media posts this month about Daniels and Trump's former fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen. “The defendant has demonstrated his willingness to flout the order. He has attacked witnesses in the case, in the past he has attacked grand jurors in the case,” prosecutor Christopher Conroy said. Under Merchan's gag order, Trump is barred from making public statements about witnesses concerning their potential testimony and about prosecutors, court staff and their family members if the statements are meant to interfere with the case. Trump lawyer Todd Blanche said Trump did not violate the gag order because he was responding to witnesses' public statements. “The two witnesses themselves have been talking about their testimony in this case, President Trump’s ongoing reelection, and just generally disparaging President Trump constantly,” Blanche said. Merchan said he would consider prosecutors' request over the lunch hour. New York state prosecutors accuse Trump of falsifying records to cover up a $130,000 payment in the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign to buy the silence of Daniels about a 2006 sexual encounter she has said they had. Trump has denied any such relationship. He pleaded not guilty last year to 34 counts of falsification of business records in the case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, in New York state court. THE JUDGE'S INSTRUCTIONS TO TRUMP ABOUT ATTENDING COURT 8 hours ago 19:11 CEST Before the lunch break, Justice Merchan addressed Trump directly and informed him of his right to be present at trial -- and the limits of those rights. "You can, however, by your conduct lose that right to be present. If you disrupt the proceedings in any way, the court is free to remove you from the courtroom and be sent to jail. If you refuse to be present, a warrant will be issued for your arrest," Merchan said. Trump said he understood those rights and conditions. Merchan told Trump these were standard instructions that he gives all criminal defendants as trial begins. The former president, who is hoping to win back the White House as the Republican 2024 candidate, can ask the judge permission not to attend certain days but has yet to do so. HERE'S A TIMELINE OF INVESTIGATIONS AND CASES INVOLVING TRUMP 9 hours ago 18:36 CEST Reuters Trump’s major legal woes Republican former president Donald Trump faces legal battles from state and federal investigators ahead of Nov. 5 U.S. election rematch against Democratic President Joe Biden. Read the article on https://www.reuters.com THE COURT HAS BROKEN FOR LUNCH 9 hours ago 18:27 CEST Jurors have been dismissed and will return at 1.30 p.m. EST. Justice Juan Merchan said he would consider prosecutors' request over the lunch hour. PROSECUTORS ASK FOR TRUMP TO BE FINED 9 hours ago 18:21 CEST By Jack Queen and Luc Cohen Prosecutors asked Justice Juan Merchan to impose a $1,000 fine each for three social media posts by Trump that they said violated a gag order. Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche said the former president was simply responding to witnesses' public statements. “The three posts that were just referenced do not violate the gag order,” Blanche said. “The two witnesses themselves have been talking about their testimony in this case, President Trump’s ongoing reelection, and just generally disparaging President Trump constantly.” Prosecutor Christopher Conroy also asked Merchan to remind Trump that violating the order can lead to jail time, and that he is a criminal defendant and is bound by the orders of the court. “The defendant has demonstrated his willingness to flout the (gag) order. He has attacked witnesses in the case, in the past he has attacked grand jurors in the case,” Conroy said. THE LEGAL ARGUMENTS ARE NOW OVER 9 hours ago 18:17 CEST By Jack Queen Merchan is moving on a to a "checklist" of just selection procedures, including time limits for questioning. It is unclear how much longer the jury pool will have to wait -- or if they will get to eat lunch first. With legal arguments over, Merchan is now reciting his voir dire rulebook. This could take a while. 500 JURORS WAITING 9 hours ago 18:07 CEST Justice Juan Merchan said about 500 jurors are waiting, as the parties continued making legal arguments. THE 'ACCESS HOLLYWOOD' TAPE HAS BEEN DISCUSSED AT LENGTH 9 hours ago 18:03 CEST There has been lengthy legal discussion in court about the famous 'Access Hollywood' tape, released before the 2016 election in which Trump can be heard bragging about grabbing women's genitals. Both whether the tape itself as well as emails showing Trump's campaign reacting to it, can be shown to the jury. THE COURT HAS RESUMED 9 hours ago 17:48 CEST THE VIEW FROM INSIDE THE COURTROOM: COURT SKETCHES 10 hours ago 17:36 CEST Trump sits with his attorney Todd Blanche before Justice Juan Merchan. REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/Pool WHAT IS HAPPENING IN COURT? 10 hours ago 17:26 CEST By Kylie MacLellan Justice Juan Merchan has called a 10-15 minute break. The prosecution and defense are still engaged in legal arguments over what can and cannot be shown to the jury during the trial. Jury selection, which is expected to take about a week, has not yet begun. Here is our latest story by Luc Cohen and Jack Queen on Monday's proceedings in court. TRUMP MEDIA SHARES TANK AFTER THE COMPANY SAID IT COULD SELL MORE STOCK 10 hours ago 17:19 CEST The Truth Social logo. February 21, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo While the former U.S. president is in court, shares of his social media company slumped 15% on Monday, our colleagues Yuvraj Malik and Echo Wang reported. Trump Media & Technology Group, which operates Truth Social, said it could sell millions of additional shares in the coming months, including Trump's entire stake. The company has been volatile since its market debut on March 26, attracting both loyal fans of the former president along with short-sellers who see the stock as wildly overvalued. To read more about the company's wild ride, read here. GAG ORDER WARNING 10 hours ago 17:13 CEST By Jack Queen Steinglass has said prosecutors may seek to hold Trump in contempt of court for what he said were continued attacks on potential witnesses in social media posts despite a gag order prohibiting him from doing so. 'I COULDN'T BE SHAMED' 10 hours ago 17:08 CEST In a profile of Stormy Daniels published by The Sunday Times of London on the eve of the trial, the adult film star talked about how her background made it harder to scare her off. The interview was carried out in November 2023 just after, Daniels said, she received confirmation that she would be called as a witness in the trial. “Can you think of a single time that ‘porn star’ wasn’t put in front of my name?” she said. “Imagine if I did something else — would ‘school teacher Stormy Daniels’ or ‘accountant Stormy Daniels’ or ‘housewife Stormy Daniels’ have ever been printed? No, it was salacious and used against me and used to ruin my credibility.” But she also told the interviewer that it worked in her favor. “Because I couldn’t be shamed. I couldn’t be threatened with nude photos — they are everywhere!” Trump has pleaded not guilty, and denied any relationship with Daniels. SUPPORTERS AND OPPONENTS OF TRUMP DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE COURT 10 hours ago 16:52 CEST HOW DID TRUMP AND STORMY DANIELS MEET? 11 hours ago 16:40 CEST FILE PHOTO: Stormy Daniels enters federal court in New York, U.S., April 16, 2018. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson Porn star Stormy Daniels has said in media interviews she met Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe in July 2006, when he was primarily known as host of the reality show “The Apprentice.” Already an adult film star, she said he invited her to dinner, and she went to his hotel suite. She told “60 Minutes” in 2018 that he said she was “smart and beautiful” and reminded him of his daughter. She said they had sex that night, which Trump has denied, and Trump suggested she could compete on “The Apprentice.” She viewed the idea as an enticement to continue to see him and said Trump called and extended invitations in the following months. The two met again in July 2007 at the Beverly Hills Hotel in California. According to Daniels, they watched a documentary about shark attacks and Trump told her he would soon have an answer about her appearance on “The Apprentice,” which never happened. She said she left that day without having sex with him and they never met again. THE PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE HAVE BEGUN MAKING LEGAL ARGUMENTS 11 hours ago 16:35 CEST By Luc Cohen Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass said David Pecker, the former chief of the National Enquirer, would testify that he ran stories extolling Donald Trump’s virtues in order to bolster Trump’s 2016 campaign, and that Trump reviewed them before they were published and suggested changes. Trump's defense attorney Todd Blanche said prosecutors’ request to show jurors National Enquirer headlines would confuse jurors about the actual crimes charged, and that there was nothing illegal or improper about Trump, Pecker and Michael Cohen meeting in 2015 to discuss upcoming articles. “That has nothing to do with the charged conduct in this case,” Blanche said. TRUMP SAID HE HAS THE SUPPORT OF '200 MILLION AMERICANS' 11 hours ago 16:29 CEST Screenshot from https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump SHOW OF HANDS 11 hours ago 16:29 CEST By Jack Queen Merchan said he will allow potential jurors to say by show of hands if they cannot be fair or otherwise not serve, in an apparent acknowledgment that many members of the pool will have strong opinions on Donald Trump. 'MOST EXHAUSTIVE QUESTIONNAIRE' 11 hours ago 16:25 CEST By Jack Queen Merchan has denied an effort by Donald Trump’s lawyers to expand the scope of questioning beyond the 42-point questionnaire that will be asked of all jurors. “This is by far the most exhaustive questionnaire this court has ever used,” Merchan said. “There will be no doubt whatsoever about what potential jurors think about Mr. Trump, the prosecutors or this case.” TRUMP HAS LOST A SECOND BID TO REMOVE THE JUDGE IN THE CASE 11 hours ago 16:11 CEST By Luc Cohen and Jack Queen Justice Juan Merchan began by disposing of Donald Trump’s latest motion to recuse him from the case, saying the former president’s claims of bias or impartiality relied on “innuendo and unsupported speculation.” “To say these claims are attenuated is an understatement,” Merchan said. Trump had argued that Merchan’s comments to the press about the justice system generally, his opinion that politicians using Twitter is “unprofessional,” a Tweet critical of Trump that was falsely attributed to his daughter, and his daughter’s work for a consulting firm that has Democratic clients rendered the judge incapable of being fair. This was Trump’s second failed bid to recuse Merchan. ALL RISE 11 hours ago 16:01 CEST By Jack Queen Justice Juan Merchan has taken the bench. The clerk has called the case and the attorneys are entering their names into the record. TRUMP'S DOOMSDAY FUNDING DRIVE 11 hours ago 16:00 CEST The trial takes place against the backdrop of Donald Trump's campaign to get back into the White House. Reuters reporter Nathan Layne, who is covering the Trump campaign and the 2024 presidential race, over the weekend highlighted on the social media platform X how Trump is using his legal cases to raise money. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Donald Trump's trial has thrust Alvin Bragg into the spotlight. Bragg is the prosecutor whose office convinced a New York grand jury in March 2023 to bring the first criminal charges ever against a former U.S. president. The 49-year-old took office in January 2022, the first Black person elected Manhattan District Attorney. He was raised in New York City's Harlem neighborhood and said he decided to go to law school after having a gun pulled on him six times growing up, three of the times by police. Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has called the probe that led to his indictment politically motivated and posted a series of personal attacks against Bragg, a Democrat. The posts included a since-deleted photo of himself holding a baseball bat next to a photo of Bragg. Trump's lawyer had denied the picture was a threat. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Bragg served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan, where he handled fraud and money laundering cases. He later joined the New York state attorney general's office, where he oversaw a lawsuit that forced Trump's namesake foundation to dissolve. In 2021, Bragg won a crowded primary for the Democratic nomination to succeed Cyrus Vance as Manhattan District Attorney. The primary race focused largely on reforming the criminal justice system by jailing fewer people and addressing racial bias, as well as on investigating Trump. He cruised to victory in the general election in heavily liberal Manhattan.
