Seeming me like this, my wife insisted that I go see a dentist, but to my shame,
I was too afraid.

You see, ever since I was a kid I had a monstrous fear of dentists.

I’ve served 6 years in the military and I can tell you, I would rather spend two
weeks in the woods half naked with no supplies, than let that hellish drilling
machine inside my mouth.

But then, the dreadful night came.

My wife woke up early as she usually does, and I decided to stay in bed a little
longer, happy that I finally caught some time off from work.

AS I TURNED MY HEAD, I NOTICED SOMETHING WAS WRONG, AS MY LOWER LEFT CHEEK WAS
SWOLLEN.

When I went to the bathroom, I could see my gums all red and inflamed, much more
so than ever before.

Now, after all these months of constant pain, I didn’t think it was something
serious, but this time the pain was different.

I could feel it growing inside me.

By noon, my teeth and left side of the head were hurting so bad, I could barely
talk to my wife.

I was already on my 3rd round of Advil for the day.

To be honest, I used to pop painkillers like Tic-Tacs back then.

But nothing seemed to stop the pain, and the inflammation was growing bigger.

Then, just a couple minutes before midnight… it happened.

As I laid in bed, trying to get some sleep, it felt like I just couldn’t get
enough air into my lungs. It felt like a big rock was stuffed in my throat.

My face turned red, as I was trying to gasp for air.

Dorothy called an ambulance right away and let me tell you, those minutes until
they arrived felt like a whole eternity in hell.

When we got to the hospital, doctors had no choice but to cut me open and insert
a tube down my throat so that the air could reach my lungs again.

It was the scariest moment of our lives.

When the doctor walked into the hospital room, he said I was lucky to survive
and that I should take tooth pain more seriously from now on.

To be honest, he was right.

So after they released me from the hospital, I decided it was time to face my
all time enemy - the dentist.

After a few X-rays and checking up my mouth, the dentist gave me the most
terrifying news.

Due to the severe damage of my teeth and gums, I was suffering from
periodontitis.

You see, periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue
and bone that supports the tooth.

It starts with inflammation, bleeding and then your gums retract, causing your
teeth to fall, and gives you bad breath and tooth decay.

And if it’s left untreated, it can get you in a lot of trouble.

Scientists have been associating periodontitis with a number of other diseases
including respiratory disease, chronic kidney disease and even arthritis.

It was terrible.

“So what are my options here, doc?”, I asked him.

As the doctor put it, if I ever wanted to see my teeth fixed, I had to “pay the
price” and yes, he was talking about money.

A lot of money, actually.

My first option was gum grafts which cost around $800 per gum, but as my dentist
was forced to confess after I asked him repeatedly, there’s no guarantee they’ll
work.

Plus, depending on how bad your gums are affected, you could end up spending
thousands on something that might prove ineffective.

Then there’s fillings and root canals.

Now, in theory these help you keep the teeth that were already damaged and let
me tell you, they are not cheap!

The prices range from $500 to $2000 for each tooth!

When it comes to spending your money, the dental industry has you covered.

Your next option is gum surgery, or “pocket elimination surgery” which basically
is supposed to strengthen your gums and costs around $5000.

Then after you’ve tried everything on the list and most likely failed, the
dental industry has one more “ultimate offer” for you.

Dental implants.

So basically they tell you to pull out ALL your teeth and replace them with
implants which cost around $5000 per tooth.

For me, the best case scenario was that I would need around 5 of these.

That’s $25,000.

They were basically forcing me to choose between putting my daughter through
college and keeping all my teeth.

Oh and the list goes on and on.

And no matter which option you go with, you’ll still have to shed $100-$200 per
maintenance session.

The worst part is, no dentist can ever guarantee that you’ll fully recover from
any of these money draining and painful treatments.

It all depends on how lucky you are.

And the worst part is, you have to wait half a year to a full year to see if
your dental implants are successful.

Just a quick online search and you’ll see hundreds of horror stories from people
who’ve paid an arm and a leg for these risky procedures only to have to do it
again.

For some unlucky fellows even the 3rd or the 4th time.

That’s insane!

As for me, the doctor said in order to fully recover I needed surgery.

Apparently the inflammation in my lower left molar that almost sent me to an
early grave wasn’t just a simple inflammation.

Somehow a tiny piece of the tooth’s root broke inside and they needed to extract
it as soon as possible or, as he said, I can literally expect the worst.

As I later found out, a tooth infection is not something to play with.

It may seem something ordinary in the beginning, but in just a matter of hours,
the infection can spread from your teeth to your brain and well… things can get
seriously bad for you.

How does that happen?

YOU SEE, EVERYTHING INSIDE YOUR BODY IS CONNECTED, INCLUDING YOUR TEETH, THROUGH
YOUR NOSE AND EYES.

Now, here’s how you can tell if you have a serious infection that needs urgent
medical care, according to my dentist.

If you are confused, experience headaches and fever do not ignore it!

Go see a doctor right away as your very own life might be in danger!

As for me, at that time I didn’t have any other way but go with the surgery.

Now, I don’t want to complain, but feeling that monstrous size anesthetic needle
punching through my gums 6 times wasn’t very pleasant.

But the worst things came later, after the surgery.

It took 6 hours before I could feel my face and even then, it still felt like my
chin and mouth was going sideways.

What was even scarier was that it took several weeks before I fully regained my
senses in my numb face.

I looked online and apparently many people had the same problem.

In fact, things got even worse for some of them.

Something that my dentist conveniently forgot to mention while I was handling
his office manager my credit card.

In fact, I got more good advice from people online, than I got from my dentist.

Apparently if you don’t regain your senses a few days after the surgery, all you
can do is take B vitamins and pray to God you’ll feel your face again.

Plus recent studies related to post surgery complications don’t look good
either.

Many people complained about bleeding, swelling, root hypersensitivity, delayed
healing, bruising and even taste changes.

I got off easily, I said to myself...

Nevertheless, I swore I would never go back to my dentist again.

I tried everything else.

I bought a special toothpaste against gum disease but with no luck.

I was always afraid to chew, eating for me became a painful exercise, always
carefully choosing the foods I would put in my mouth.

I stopped eating meat and would only eat soft foods at some points.

Soups, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, mashed potatoes.

they feed on plaque, so the more of that you have, the bigger the buffet.

Then they release toxins that irritate your gums and give you bad breath in
return.

Usually your body is able to successfully heal the inflammation, but the problem
is that scars remain.

And with each time this problem occurs, your gums retract even more.

And if this is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis.

When you have periodontitis, the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from
your teeth and form pockets.

If your teeth look longer than they used to, chances are they’re not growing,
your gums are shrinking.

So these small spaces between teeth and gums collect debris and can become
infected.

Toxins or poisons produced by the bacteria in plaque start to break down the
bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place.

As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are
destroyed.

When this happens, teeth are no longer anchored in place, they become loose, and
you start losing your teeth.

Dr. Loesche from the University of Michigan said in a recent interview that
“there are 20 billion bacteria in your mouth and they reproduce every five
hours. If you go 24 hours without brushing, those 20 billion become 100
billion!”.

The problem is, as gum disease advances you’re left with even fewer treatment
options.

Brushing your teeth alone is not enough, because even if you do this like a
maniac after every meal, research shows that 10% of these bacteria still remain
hidden inside your gum pockets.

For example, flossing is good to remove those tiny pieces of food stuck in
between your teeth, but is very dangerous if your gums are red and inflamed.

Mouthwash only treats the surface of your issue and is unable to break down the

Now there’s dental scaling, which means that your dentist uses a special tool to
reach below your gum line in order to remove the plaque buildup.

The problem is that in order to be fully effective it has to be done at least
twice a week.

Plus, with time this technique destroys the enamel on your teeth, which means

Now, let’s say that after all this, your tooth falls, but you can afford an
implant and after a whole painful year the surgery is successful.

Then what?

The future looked bleak.
