2024 AGOTIME KENTE FESTIVAL SLATED FOR AUGUST 4-10

Hebrews PouyeliJune 17, 2024June 17, 2024

Amid vibrant colors and cultural splendor, the 2024 Kente Festival of the people
of Agotime in the Volta Region was officially inaugurated in Ho last weekend,
marking the beginning of a week-long celebration from August 4 to 10.

Themed “Repositioning The Kente Heritage For Inclusive Development,” the
festival promises an array of activities showcasing the rich cultural heritage
of the Agotime traditional area.

Scheduled events include dedicated days for children and women, traditional
musket firing, captivating exhibitions of Kente, symbolic water fetching rituals
performed by maidens, the historic ‘godigbe’ (landing day), culminating in a
grand durbar on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

Emilia Emefa Adzimah, the Agotime-Ziope District Chief Executive, presiding over
the launch, emphasized the significance of the Kente Festival as a testament to
the area’s rich cultural tapestry. She urged the people of Agotime to foster
unity, urging them to set aside trivial chieftaincy disputes in favor of
preserving the noble image of their heritage.

Elvis Ativoe, the Kente Festival Coordinator, extolled the cultural and economic
value of Kente cloth to the Agotime Traditional Area, asserting its status as
Ghana’s most esteemed festival with increasing global recognition. He urged
master weavers to adapt to evolving market demands while staying true to the
essence of their craft.

Dr. George-Grandy Hallow, a member of the festival planning committee,
underscored Kente’s unifying influence across diverse ethnic and geographical
boundaries. He emphasized its role as a cultural artifact that binds communities
together, transcending linguistic and regional divides.

Cephas Kafui Apenuvor, a prominent entrepreneur, encouraged the youth of Agotime
to consider Kente weaving as a viable career path. As the CEO of Cephas K.
Company Limited, he highlighted the lucrative opportunities within the Kente
industry, urging young people to embrace and safeguard this enduring aspect of
their heritage.

HO : TRICYCLE RIDERS TO EMBARK ON STRIKE OVER GHC360 DUES

Hebrews PouyeliJune 12, 2024June 12, 2024

Tricycle Riders in the Volta Regional Capital, Ho, have threatened to embark on
strike for the Ho Municipal Assembly to halt the blockade of roads in the
municipality as a result of annual assembly dues of Ghc360.

Prince Selorm Gbadago, the Public Relations officer of the Volta Regional branch
of the National Tricycle Operators Union of Ghana said the assembly must be
considerate.

“As We were paying the assembly GHC10 annually, then all of a sudden, they
engaged us and told us we have to pay GHC360…Why can’t you consider Saturdays
and Sundays? Sometimes the bike doesn’t work, maybe the person is sick, and the
bike is in the house, and you want the person to be paying, it doesn’t work that
way,” he said.

According to the riders, although the annual dues have been reduced to Ghc150,
the assembly failed to inform leadership and members of the riders’ association,
of the intended road blocking as a result of non-payment of the dues.

In a recent statement made by Torgbigah Adamah III, the Awoamefia of Anlo,
Torgbi Sri III is not only about to create confusion in Somè but also to create
conflicts between Anlo and Somè with his decisions to to create and elevate,

idle to allow his wishes to materialize because they Forefathers had vehemently
and vigorously resisted such an attempted in the past and they are ready to
follow a law suit, when the need be.

He continues to said that”the chiefs and the Somè Traditional Area have long
been aware of the many machinesm by the leadership of Anlo to create the
impression in the minds and eyes of many Ghanaians and the outside world that

BAKU- AYIVOR ROYAL FAMILY REACTS TO PURPORTED ENSTOOLMENT OF NEW CHIEF FOR DENU

Hebrews PouyeliJune 6, 2024June 6, 2024

The Baku- Ayivor Royal Family of Denu in the Ketu South municipality of the
Volta region has served strong warning to any individual or group of people
seeking to destabilize the peace and security of Denu.

This warning comes on the back of the purported enstoolment of a new Chief
(Dufia) of Denu as Torgbi Baku V.

A press statement issued by the family on Tuesday, June 4 in reaction to the
development indicated that the Baku- Ayivor Royal Family remained the bonafide
custodians, stool fathers and kingmakers of the Baku- Ayivor Royal Family of
Denu.

The statement said
Togbi Baku IV, the current Dufia of Denu, was legitimately nominated, enstooled
and out-doored by the Royal Stool Fathers and duly gazetted on 22nd December
1993. (This can be readily verified from the National House of Chiefs records).

The statement added that “Togbi Baku IV, Dufia of Denu, has since and continues
to carry out his mandate dutifully till today, and will continue do so into the
future – Thus, since he is alive, no
other person can hold himself as Dufia of Denu, and or bear the Baku or any
other title in the capacity of Dufia of Denu.”

“It is quite bizarre if not alarming to have some individuals purporting to have
installed a new chief for Denu, as Togbi Baku V.

This self-seeking and disturbing incident is illegal, and equally threatens the
soul,
peace and security of the people and residents of Denu,” the statement said.

It further indicated that the family had Intelligence information indicating
that Togbi Adamah III, Paramount Chief of Some
Traditional Area, is party to this illegality to impose one Mr. Godwin Nyavor,
who is not recognised in the royal cycles of Denu on the people.

“This incident has already heightened tension amongst the youth in the Denu
township, as witnessed by the firing of arms randomly over last weekend – Any
further attempt seeking to interfere with the peaceful reign ofTogbi Baku IV and
or impose any unknown person on the people of Denu, is quite likely to be met
with resistance in equal measure, if not more,” the statement observed.

The statement further called on the state security agencies, through the Ketu
South
Municipal and Volta Regional Security Councils, to intervene immediately, to
forestall the looming chaos, that this development will lead to and disturbing
the peace loving people of Denu.

The statement concluded by reminding “all and sundry that, the
law-abiding nature and good citizenship being displayed by the
Baku-Ayivor Royal Family in these provoking
circumstances should not be taken for granted by any party.”

GEFIA FALLS UNDER AVENOR TRADITIONAL AREA – JUDICIAL COMMITTEE DECIDES

Hebrews PouyeliJune 5, 2024June 5, 2024

Gefia, nestled within the Avenor Traditional Area, is the subject of a recent
legal dispute heard by the Judicial Committee of the Volta Regional House of
Chiefs.

On the 23rd of May 2024, the committee decided on an Application for a Writ of
Summons brought by Torgbui Kludzi III and two others against Torgbuiga Dorglo
Anumah VI, the Paramount Chief of the Avenor Traditional Council, along with
others.

The plaintiffs sought various reliefs, including recognition as the de facto, de
jure, and gazetted Dufia of Gefia or Dutor of Gefia. Additionally, they
requested an order restraining the Paramount Chief of Avenor from expanding
jurisdiction over Gefia, asserting its belonging to the Atsiame Traditional
Area.

However, the defendants filed a motion to strike out the writ of summons,
arguing lack of jurisdiction by the Volta Regional House of Chiefs. In its
ruling, the court concurred, citing Article 274 of the 1992 Constitution of
Ghana and Section 26 of the Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759). The appropriate
forum for resolution was deemed to be the Judicial Committee of the Avenor
Traditional Council.

Chaired by Torgbe Gbogbi Atsa V, the Paramount Chief of Adaklu Traditional Area,
and with members including Togbega Atsridom V of Kpedze Traditional Area and
Togbega Sei II of Botoku Traditional Area, the committee awarded costs of 5,000
Ghana Cedis to the Defendants/Applicants.

The genesis of the dispute traces back to April 6, 2006, when the Arbitration
Committee of the then Fiaga of the Avenor Traditional Area, Torgbuiga Dorglo
Anumah V, suspended and withdrew Torgbui Kludzi III from the Avenor Traditional
Area Chief List. Allegations surfaced that Torgbui Kludzi III hailed from a
matrilineal line, contrary to Avenor’s traditional practices, thus disqualifying
him from chieftaincy.

Amidst ongoing tensions between the Avenor Traditional Area and the Atsiame
Clan, led by Torgbui Samlafo IV, Torgbui Kludzi III, stripped of recognition,
sought refuge through the Anlo Traditional Council. However, he was later
fraudulently gazetted as Dufia of Gefia within the Avenor Traditional Area by
the National House of Chiefs on November 12, 2015.

The planning committee wishes to invite all citizens that are ready to
voluntarily avail themselves of and be of service to the SOMÈ Traditional
Area during the week-long festival celebration.
Volunteering for community projects is important for several reasons.
Firstly, it allows Somèawo (i.e., citizens of Some) to actively contribute
to the improvement and development of their various communities in
particular and Somè in general. Through volunteering, individuals can help
address local issues, build stronger community connections, and make a
positive impact on the lives of their fellow citizens.
Additionally, volunteering provides an opportunity for personal growth and
skill development. It allows individuals to learn new skills, gain valuable
experience, and expand their social and professional networks. Volunteering
can also be personally rewarding, providing a sense of fulfilment and
satisfaction from making a difference in the lives of others.
From a broader perspective, citizen participation in community projects
helps to foster a sense of civic responsibility and social cohesion. It
promotes a culture of collaboration, empathy, and mutual support within the
community, ultimately leading to a stronger and more resilient society.
Overall, volunteering for community projects is an essential aspect of civic
engagement and can have far-reaching positive impacts on both individuals
    and their communities.
These are the reasons why the planning committee welcomes all citizens that
are ready to avail themselves of and be of service to the SOMÈ Traditional
Area during the week-long festival celebration. The anticipated roles to be
played by volunteers are as follows:
    • Provide support for fund raising in their locality.
    • Lead communal labour and other festival preparatory activities.
    • Help mobilise Somèawo to prepare and participate in the festival.
    • Ready to support in getting durbar grounds ready for the festival.
    • Identify and lead initiatives that culminate in successful realization of
    the goals of the festival.
    • Help with setting up booths, stages, and other festival amenities, as well
    as cleaning up afterwards.
    • Assist with greeting and directing attendees, providing information about
the festival, and offering general assistance to guests.
    • Help organize and run games, workshops, performances, and other
    interactive elements of the festival.
    • Aid in spreading the word about the festival through distributing flyers,
posting on social media, and other promotional efforts.
    • Assist with behind-the-scenes tasks such as coordinating schedules,
managing supplies, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
These are just a few examples, and the specific opportunities available will
depend on the needs of the various festival events and activities and the
roles that the organizers are looking to fill. If you are interested in
volunteering for SOMÈTUTUZÃ 2024, kindly reach out to the festival Planning
Committee Chairman, Tourgbui Geli 0246142391, or Mr. Dan Sodokpo 0244228998
    to inquire about available opportunities.

History of the People of Somè
The people from SOMÈ in the Ketu South Municipality of Volta Region now called
the SOMÈAWO were once part of the Ewe group that lived in Egypt, Sudan, the
Empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai. They later moved to KETU (in present day
Nigeria) where they were known as the KETUAWO.
From Ketu, the Ewe groups moved to NOTSIE (in Togo) and stayed under the rule of
KING AGORKORLI. In Notsie, the Somèawo were known as the Agudzeawo. The Ewes
decided to move again. The KETUAWO were one of the groups that took the lead.
They eventually settled at TSEVIE (in present day Togo).
From Tsevie, the KETUAWO moved westwards under the leadership of KING
NUKPORNUKU, the son of KING AGORKORLI and settled at AYIDIGA along the lagoon.
Having found Ayidiga unsuitable for their habitation, the KETUAWO left that
place and eventually founded KETA and thus became known as the KETAWO. They also
built other settlements along the coast.
The Ketawo had been very cordial traders with the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the
Danes, in slaves, tobacco and alcohol. They had lived peacefully with these
Europeans until 1792 when an otherwise harmless incident triggered a bitter
confrontation between them and the Danes. The Danes asked the Anlos to help them
against the Ketawo. But since they were friendly neighbours, the Ketawo and the
Anlos decided to fight a fake war (a DUKOTSO WAR – to fight without using live
ammunition). But later a misunderstanding between them led to a real war. The
Ketawo were forced by the guns given to the Anlos by the Danes to flee across
the lagoon. The Danes assisted by the Anlos chased the Ketawo. Bitter battles
were fought and a decisive one was fought at DORLORME (where the Anlo warriors
slept and were slaughtered) and AWASEFE (where the war had ended).
From Dorlorme, the Ketawo moved to GLIDZEANU (now SATSIMADZA). There they drove
away the WLIAWO who had been terrorizing the KLIAWO/KLIKOAWO. Having found
Glidzeanu unsatisfactory, the Ketawo moved gain and settled at YEGBEFUIME.
The Ketawo found the place suitable for their activities. There were also a lot
of DUN PALMS at the place, so they called it SOMÈ, and they became known as the
SOMÈAWO.
Between 1794 and 1798, the Somèawo had confrontations with the Anlos. The four –
year war ended in a decisive win for the Somèawo at a place named
DZENUNYEKPODZI.
The founder of Somè was TORGBI ADAMAH I. The spiritual and administrative
capital of Somè is AGBOZUME. From Agbozume, comprising Amukoe, Sukladzi – Agudza
and Kpordiwlor, the Somèawo moved outwards and founded other settlements.
Some Traditional Area currently has 17 electoral areas with total population of
a Hundred Thousand (100,000) plus people according to the 2020 Population Census
Data.
The main Somè settlements (towns and villages) are:
A. Coastal: Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu, Adina, Agorko/Tettekorfe,
Adafienu, Xedzranawo, Denu.
B. Hinterland: Agbozume, Amukoe, Sukladzi, Afegame, Lafeto, Yegbefuime, Nogokpo,
Agbevekorfe, Ativuta, Amefinukorfe, Galleykorfe, Babanawokorfe, Gabadakorfe,
Govinakorfe, Akasito, Akasigodo, Tomekorfe, Blewuadakorfe, Agudzakorfe,
Kpordiwlor/Adrorvitame, Ahorkpoe, Bayikor, Dzaglame, Kpedzakorfe, Alagbakorfe,
Sokatsikorfe, Kumadekorfe, Worgbato, Sonuto, Tackscorner,

ANLO, KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF SOMÈ TRADITIONAL COUNCIL – TORGBIGAH ADAMAH III

Hebrews PouyeliJune 2, 2024June 2, 2024

The chiefs of Somè Traditional Council led by their Paramount Chief and
president Torgbigah Adamah III, on 28th May 2024 issued a press statement in
reaction to a document been circulates by Torgbi Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo
to the Minister for chieftaincy and Religious Affairs caption ” CREATION OF NEW
TRADITIONAL COUNCIL AND ELEVATION OF PARAMOUNT CHIEFS IN ANLO DUKOR” in Somè
Fugo Traditional Council townships namely, ADAFIENU, XEDZRANAWO and DENU.

According to Torgbigah Adamah III, the president of Somè Traditional Council
Somèawo are not part of the Anloawo even at Notsie that all they lived in
different quarters, the Somèawo then referred to as Agudzeawo lived separately
from the Anlos then, know as the Dogbo-Nyiboawo. And it only that as they all
have migrated separately, but passing through the same route hopefully to settle
in comfort land.

But now “we the Somèawo, are at loss to what locus or capacity Torgbi Sri III
has, calling for the creation of traditional council and elevation of Somè
stools to his paramouncy. Even as we speak the 1992 Constitution and Chieftaincy
ACT, ACT 279 OF 2008 do not conformed to, such powers. So we wish to warn our
brothers who are helping the Anlos in their agenda to destabilize Somè to
disease from doing that, for they are biting more than what they can chew” he
added.
