2022 Q2 NEWSLETTER - 2022 LEO SICHEWSKI BURSARY RECIPIENT LOUCAS ETHIER

Loucas Ethier comes by his interest in firefighting honestly; his father is ERAC
Technical Advisor Louis-Philippe Ethier, who worked as a paramedic and
professional firefighter for more than 25 years before joining ERAC.

“As the son of a first responder, I learned how meaningful the work can be,”
said Loucas. “Being there and helping people when they need it most is one of
the most satisfying aspects of working as a first responder.”

Loucas, a recent graduate of the firefighting training program at the Fire and
Emergency Services Training Institute (FESTI) in Toronto believes his strong
understanding of the job, combined with the mental and physical attributes he’s
gained and developed as a world-class figure skater, will result in a successful
firefighting career. 

“It’s the kind of career where you never stop learning and you’re always trying
to be better,” added Loucas. “My biggest takeaway from FESTI is that a regular
day as a first responder could be the worst day of someone’s life. It really
drove home the significance of the job and that you need to have the right
mindset to do the work.”

Loucas is one of two recipients of the 2022 ERAC Leo Sichewski Memorial Bursary.
In memory of Leo, a valued 24-year veteran of ERAC, the bursary allows ERAC
responders, employees, Plan Participants, and family members of the previously
mentioned, to access up to $2,000 annually for educational purposes.

“Firefighting is not a job for everyone,” stated Loucas. “I’m fortunate that
I’ve had first-hand experience learning what it takes to be successful in the
profession and I’m confident I have all the tools to do so.”
