Privilege is a social consequence of our unwillingness to reckon with and turn
from sin. But properly stewarded, it can help us see and participate in God's
inbreaking kingdom. Scripture repeatedly affirms that privilege is real and

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the Director of Racial Righteousness and
Reconciliation for the Evangelical Covenant Church. An ordained minister,
Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland.
Gilliard also serves on the board of directors for the Christian Community
Development Association.
He is the author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that
Restores, which won the 2018 InterVarsity Press Readers' Choice Award and was
named one of Outreach Magazine’s 2019 Outreach Resources of the Year - Social
Issues / Justice.

Aaaaaand.....he does it again! Dominique Gilliard, author of "Rethinking
Incarceration" brings us another prophetic stroke of the pen to equip the Church
in its discipleship, this time particularly through the lens of the realities of
privilege and the call of Christians to justice.
In "Subversive Witness", Gilliard reintroduces readers to many of the bible
characters familiar from Sunday school stories but this time with a lens that
allows us to go deeper into the context of each story by using Biblical
commentary, historical research, social studies data and contemporary analysis.
The purpose of this work is clear from the outset as he states it to "call
privileged people to leverage our access, influence, and resources to subvert
the status quo and advance the kingdom." The concept of this book is powerful
because it moves from the denial or the guilt of privilege and instead
transforms it into synergy for the sake of justice. Gilliard says, "When we
choose to leverage privilege for the furtherance of the kingdom and the good of
our neighbors, we become instruments of peace that God uniquely uses to induce
freedom and justice for our fractured world."
As I read the book there were three ways that I felt:
1. Unsettled: It was very prophetically unsettling to read of the multiple ways
that MOST of us Western Christians are not only privileged but also blinded to
this reality and living insular and self-serving lives rather than selflessly
giving ourselves for God's kingdom. I was surprised to see layers of the stories
that I hadn't noticed before because of my "spiritual" readings of the text vs
letting the text speak to me in a holistic way. I was lovingly convicted as I
read of some of the areas where I have been granted privilege and have not
thought to offer them up to God for his will to be done through me.
2. Healing: Because Gilliard delves deeper into the background of each Bible
story, he calls out the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual traumas and
anxieties suffered by the people in these stories to show us how they were
embodied humans and not just stoic characters in literary a plot. As I read the
stories through this filter, I was able to not only see how they were called to
social action and justice, but I was additionally experience a level of healing
as I interacted with these characters in our Scriptures. Gilliard essentially
incarnates these people so that they come to life and we realize how they had to
endure so much pain, trauma, injustice and opposition even in the midst of their
transformation and calling. This aspect of the book brought a level of personal
healing to me in my reading.
3. Inspiration: By giving examples of people in the Scriptures who leveraged
their own privilege for justice, Gilliard leads the readers to introspection and
reflection on how this can shape our own faith walk with God and with others. He
writes, "The gospel declares our individual freedom, flourishing, and prosperity
are tied to communal thriving. Within the realm of the kingdom, we collectively
experience liberation and shalom, and we do so by seeking the peace and
prosperity of our neighbors and taking on a Christlike mindset." These phrases
and others like them help the reader to move from reflection to action. He even
includes a robust like of bullet pointed items to show Christians where we can
tangibly leverage our privilege for Justice right now in our everyday lives. I
felt empowered and inspired that I could continue in the same vain as these
people mentioned in scripture to seek the purposes of God in our world.
Subversive Witness is powerful, prophetic commentary on Scipture, a historical
critique of systemic and personal injustices in our countries and communities,
and a future-minded hopeful call to awareness of the areas in our life where we
have privileges in order to actively use them for the sake of the justice and
peace of Jesus.
I highly recommend this book for disciples and seekers of faith who are looking
for empowering ways to use what has been giving to us now, for the causes of
justice, compassion and peace.

Dominique Gilliard clearly articulates what privilege is and how Christians can
and should use our privilege to promote justice and peace. Throughout the book,
Gilliard includes examples of biblical figures and Christ followers leveraging
their privilege in different ways to further God's mission on earth. I consider
this book a must-read for Christians in the US who are seeking practical ways to
respond to systemic injustices.

Here is what might be book of the year for me. Dominique Dubois Gilliard
addresses the topic of "privilege"—the advantages provided by gender, color,
national or ethnic origin, appearance, educational opportunity, social class
etc. Privilege is not something that initially we chose, but what do we do with
it when we realize we have it? Exploit it to the detriment of others? Or
"leverage" it on behalf of those who don't have so much. This is brilliant.
Gilliard's command of the history of privilege (especially the racial stuff) is
top notch. And I love how he explores how biblical figures like Moses, Esther,
Paul and Silas, Zacchaeus, and, above all Jesus, leveraged their privilege for
the good of others rather than just justifying themselves in comfort. This is
the kind of authentic, radically biblical Christianity I have been drawn to all
my life. Reading this book could correct and augment what's going on so often in
today's church—and it would be a superb introduction to the true Christian
faith—what it means to follow Jesus—for jaded ex-Christians, "nones" or seekers.
It's that good. Buy in bulk and give to your friends.

Subversive Witness really is such an incredible, thought-provoking, life
changing book. It is THE book you need for your walk with Jesus to come alive
and for your faith to be a robust one that intersects with (and is •relevant•
in) society!
While there are so many amazing quotes and concepts in this book where the
Scriptures come alive in a fresh and applicable way, I’m highlighting (literally
the first screen grab) the passage you first see here because it concisely
serves as the thesis statement of this book.
Early one morning I was reading this book and was utterly moved to tears,

“Is the Gospel still good news when it costs you something?” Clearly just in the
above story alone, it cost something for all 3 of these women. The cost for us
is laying aside our privilege and flexing our faith. This book shows us as
followers of Jesus what it really looks like to be his disciple. Considering the
cost Jesus paid while trusting God is always good, I have no doubt the Gospel
continues to be good news no matter where Jesus leads me.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey of #discipleship and read this incredible
book too! God has SO MUCH MORE in store for us than the Christianity we have
known or lived out for so long, and Subversive Witness gives the scriptural
basis and application to teach and challenge us on how to have that life with

researched. He utilizes plenty of modern day examples to support scripture
references, with each chapter ending with Reflection questions that would work

Subversive Witness really is such an incredible, thought-provoking, life
changing book. It is THE book you need for your walk with Jesus to come alive
and for your faith to be a robust one that intersects with (and is •relevant•
in) society!
While there are so many amazing quotes and concepts in this book where the
Scriptures come alive in a fresh and applicable way, I’m highlighting (literally
the first screen grab) the passage you first see here because it concisely
serves as the thesis statement of this book.

Why should I read this book?
Understanding the culture of Scripture can change our entire perceptions of
passages, and ultimately our understanding of ourselves. Subversive Witness is a
call to not only witness and act on current culture, but to recognize the
responses of our fore-bearers in Scripture. Using the examples and stories of
individuals from Scripture (such as Esther, Moses, & Jesus), this book dives
headlong into the sensitive discussion of privilege.
This is an especially great read for those of us who might be struggling to
understand what is a Biblical perspective and meaning of privilege. If you find
yourself overwhelmed or uncomfortable with discussions of race, privilege, or
responsibility therein, this is a great book for you. It takes a biblical
approach and gives actionable interpretations to apply to our culture.
What did this book challenge me to do?
For me, personally, I'm not sure that this book was as much a challenge to do
something, but the missing puzzle piece in my comprehension. This book clearly
articulated a firm, responsible understanding of Scripture that easily lends to
a purposeful use of God's Word to form healthy communities. This is not to say
that challenges to act are not present. This book easily calls us to act and
live in a responsible and hope-filled way.

This book challenged me as a Canadian to examine my complacency to the lack of
movement in the truth and reconciliation resolutions. The truth is that it did
take the unearthing of 215 graves to move me to support my indigenous friends in
their fight for Justice. This book sets a biblical framework as to why that work
