Spotify Received a Major Boost this Year from an Unexpected Listenership

Gamers were glued to their consoles early. The music streaming on gaming
consoles during the hours of 6 am and 9mam rose 47% from last year. Their
preferred music genre? Rap and trap music are their most favored genres. The
most popular songs that were streamed on gaming consoles were "The Box" by Roddy
Ricch, "Blueberry Faygo" by Lil Mosey, "goosebumps" by rapper Travis Scott,
"ROCKSTAR" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch and "Falling" by Trevor Daniel.

After performing a concert online in Fortnite, the Spotify traffic for Travis
Scott, a musician who has agreements with McDonalds and PlayStation increased
dramatically. The streaming platform said that streaming were up by 207% across
the world between April 26 and April 30 of last year, compared to the previous
year.

People were looking for music from video games. The most popular video game
soundtracks this year were “Minecraft,” the original “Doom” and “Death
Stranding.”

2020 was also a huge year for virtual artists, artists who have fictional
personas like the band Gorillaz. The streaming of Hatsune Miku, a Japanese
virtual singer, increased by 136% in the year 2018.

Riot Games, the company behind “League of Legends”, created a virtual pop-star
group known as K/DA in 2018. MYCMS The name refers to the League of Legends
lingo, which refers to the kills and deaths of players during every game. They
then record these on the scoreboard. Riot brought back the group, voiced this
year by real-life singers with the release of a new album. Its songs topped the
Billboard charts. Its streams were up 109% in the last year on Spotify.

Riot said that its invention of K/DA has allowed it to expand its reach beyond
League gamers and has helped get more people interested in the game’s content,
it said to CNN Business in a statement.

Cook stated that music and gaming are inextricably linked, as gamers listen to
music as they play.

Spotify continues to look into partnerships with gaming companies. Spotify
recently joined forces with League of Legends. It continues to collaborate with
Microsoft on the Xbox and PlayStation platforms.

Cook stated that Spotify has increased its gaming console streaming streams. It
has added more playlists that are curated. “Thinking about the best way to play
and what people like to listen to while playing,” Cook said.
