More than 2,100 people from 120 countries strode into Dodger Stadium on a
sun-drenched day and raised their right hands to become American citizens on
Monday, Aug. 29, during the largest such ceremony in Los Angeles in more than
two years.

Jacinto Castro, 76, a resident of Huntington Park, beamed during the event. He
has lived here for 50 years and attends Dodger games as a fan.

“I’m happy to have done the ceremony at Dodger Stadium,” as he sat with his
daughter Veronica.

Ur M. Jaddou, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services,
administered the Oath of Allegiance during the naturalization ceremony.

Jaddou donned a blue Dodger hat before presenting Dodger broadcaster and
legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela with the Outstanding American by Choice
recognition.

Valenzuela, who grew up in Mexico before becoming a pitching hero for L.A.’s
Blue Crew, was named a Presidential Ambassador for Citizenship and
Naturalization by President Barack Obama.

The top 10 nations of origin represented at Monday’s event were Mexico, El
Salvador, the Philippines, Iran, Guatemala, China, Armenia, South Korea, India
and the United Kingdom.
