General Information

The NWS National GIS Map Viewer, "Viewer", functionality descriptions can be
found at the Viewer Help page, and in the Viewer User Guide. For general
questions about or suggestions for the Viewer, you can email us
at nws.gisviewer@noaa.gov.

The National GIS Map Viewer (powered by the Environmental Response Management
Application® (ERMA)) is a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) tool
that assists National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists, hydrologists,
oceanographers, and other scientists in the critical NWS mission of providing
customers "weather, water, and climate data, forecast and warnings for the
protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy." The
Viewer integrates and synthesizes various real-time and static datasets into a
single interactive map, thus provides visualization of the situation and
improves communication and coordination among stakeholders.

The Viewer has program sites for NWS service areas to tailor information for
that program's service area. The General and Water program sites are operational
as of October 2022.  Experimental program sites also exist
for Tropical, Fire, Severe, Winter, Space, Climate, Aviation, and Marine service
areas.  These experimental program sites will remain experimental until
operational status is approved by the program area subject matter experts and
announced as operational in a NWS service change notice.

This website was designed by the NWS Office of Dissemination by customizing
the ERMA website designed by NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration,
the University of New Hampshire, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The default datasets contained within the Viewer were identified by NWS subject
matter experts and stakeholders.
