THE 7 BEST REVEALS FROM BRITNEY SPEARS’ TELL-ALL MEMOIR

CHARLOTTE VOSSEN
October 25, 2023

Britney Spears is finally telling her story on her terms. On Tuesday, the pop
star’s tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me, was released in the UK. In the 275-page
read, or five-and-a-half hour listen (the audiobook is narrated by actress
Michelle Williams), Spears details her early life, rise to fame and subsequent
breakdown which led to the conservatorship which controlled her life for 13
years. We’ve rounded up the 7 biggest revelations from the book…

THE ‘...BABY ONE MORE TIME’ MUSIC VIDEO WAS ALMOST SPACE THEMED

In 1998, a 16-year-old Britney Spears released the now-iconic video for her
debut single, ...Baby One More Time, in which she features as a high-school
student in a plaid miniskirt and tied-up white button down. In her memoir, she
reveals that label executives wanted the video to be space themed, and she would
play a futuristic astronaut.

‘The mock-up I saw had me looking like a Power Ranger. That image didn’t
resonate with me, and I had a feeling my audience wouldn’t relate to it, either.
I told the executives at the label that I thought people would want to see my
friends and me sitting at school, bored, and then, as soon as the bell rang,
boom — we’d start dancing.’

She added: ‘I thought we should wear school uniforms to make it seem more
exciting when we started dancing outside in our casual clothes. Making that
video was the most fun part of doing that first album.’

SHE HAD AN ABORTION WHILE DATING JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

As first revealed in People earlier this week, Spears recounts in detail the
decision to get an abortion after she became pregnant during their relationship.
She said she didn’t view the pregnancy as ‘a tragedy’ but that he thought they
were too young.

‘Abortion was something I never could have imagined, choosing for myself, but
given the circumstances, that is what we did.’

The two decided to handle the abortion at home in the bathroom, and Spears took
‘little pills’ to end the pregnancy. ‘After that, I was messed up for a while,
especially because I still love Justin so much. It was insane how much I loved
him, and for me, it was unfortunate.’

SHE WAS TERRIFIED BY THE SNAKE DURING HER 2001 VMAS PERFORMANCE

Britney Spears famously took the stage of the 2001 VMAs to perform I’m a Slave 4
U with a yellow python draped over her shoulders. She writes she was terrified
of the snake, even though its handler was a woman even smaller than she was.

‘In my head, I was saying, just perform, just use your legs and perform. But
what nobody knows is that as I was singing, the snake brought its head right
around to my face, right up to me, and started hissing at me. You didn’t see
that shot on the TV, but in real life? I was thinking, Are you f–king serious
right now? The f–king godd–n snake’s tongue is flicking out at me. Right. Now.
Finally, I got to the part where I handed it back, thank God.’

SHE ALMOST STARRED IN ‘THE NOTEBOOK’ AND ‘CHICAGO’

Making her acting debut in the 2002 film Crossroads, Spears recalls she couldn’t
break out of her character until after filming was over. She felt so overwhelmed
by the acting process, she decided it was best to turn down future roles
including ones in The Notebook and Chicago.

‘The Notebook casting came down to me and Rachel McAdams, and even though it
would have been fun to reconnect with Ryan Gosling after our time on the Mickey
Mouse Club, I’m glad I didn’t do it. If I had, instead of working on my album In
the Zone, I’d have been acting like a 1940s heiress day and night.’

‘When it came to Chicago, I should’ve done it. Chicago would have been fun. It’s
all dance pieces — my favorite kind: prissy, girly follies, Pussycat Doll-like,
serve-off-your-corset moves. I wish I’d taken that offer. I would have gotten to
play a villain who kills a man, and sings and dances while doing it, too.’

HER PARTY STAGE WAS ‘NEVER AS WILD’ AS IT WAS PORTRAYED IN THE PRESS

We’ve all seen the infamous paparazzi pictures of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan
and Paris Hilton. In her memoir, Spears says Hilton was ‘one of the people who
was kindest to me’ when she needed it following her split from Kevin Federline.
She admits that this was the start of her ‘party stage’ but ‘it was never as
wild as the press made it out to be’.

Spears says she did not go out often but any occasion she did would make
headlines. She had no interest in hard drugs and ‘never had a drinking problem’.
Instead, Spears describes her ‘drug of choice’ as the ADHD medication Adderall,
which ‘made me high, yes, but what I found far more appealing was that it gave
me a few hours of feeling less depressed’.

SHE FIRST ATTEMPTED TO END THE CONSERVATORSHIP IN 2014

In early 2008, amid her public struggles, the singer was placed in a
conservatorship that would last for 13 years. She describes the decision as
being made by her father along with support from her mother and a business
manager, Louise Taylor.

‘I know I had been acting wild, but there was nothing I’d done that justified
their treating me like I was a bank robber. Nothing that justified upending my
entire life.’

‘I went from partying a lot to being a total monk. Security guards handed me
prepackaged envelopes of meds and watched me take them. They put parental
controls on my iPhone. Everything was scrutinized and controlled. Everything.’

Spears says she first started attempts to end the conservatorship in 2014, but
the case didn't go anywhere. ‘What followed was a cloak-and-dagger effort to get
my own lawyer. I even mentioned the conservatorship on a talk show in 2016, but
somehow, that part of the interview didn't make it to the air. Huh. How
interesting.’

HER MUSIC CAREER MIGHT BE OVER

While fans believe the conservatorship saved Spears’s life, she writes that
music was her life, ‘and the conservatorship was deadly for that’. Now that she
has the opportunity to create freely again, she does not feel motivated to do
so.

‘Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment. Right now
it’s time for me to try to get my spiritual life in order, to pay attention to
little things, to slow down. It’s time for me not to be someone who other people
want; it’s time to actually find myself.’

‘As I’ve gotten older, I like my alone time. Being an entertainer was great, but
over the last five years, my passion to entertain in front of a live audience
has lessened. I do it for myself now. I feel God more when I’m alone.’

Quick garlic miso ramen

As with all bowls of broth, a bowl of ramen is only as good as the base stock
it’s made with. Most supermarkets have great ones and I find that the broths
that come in bags, in the fridge section, will have more body and substance than
stock cubes. If you can find bone broth, even better, as this will be packed
with the collagen and fats that we need to make a good bowl of ramen in limited
time.

Quick-sharp Dan Dan Mian

Dan Dan Mian is one of my all-time favourites. You can find many versions and
styles of this dish at different restaurants, and there are just as many
recipes. This is my bare-bones version, without any frills or additional extras.

Sizzling red oil noodles

The name of this recipe makes it sound very dramatic and theatrical, which it
is. Pouring hot oil over the raw ingredients and noodles creates mini fireworks
inside the bowl. But the reason I love it most is that it’s so quick and uses
only one pan.

Salmon mazesoba

Mazesoba translates from Japanese to English as ‘mixed-up noodles’ and it’s one
of my favourite ways to use up leftovers. In this dish, several elements are
arranged on top of a carb and then mixed up and served with an egg on top.

Aubergine doubanjiang noodles

This recipe is inspired by the Sichuan dish yu xiang, or ‘fish-fragrant’, named
so not because it contains any fish but due to the heady, savoury flavour
imparted by the doubanjiang, a spicy fermented bean sauce.

Creamy miso mushroom udon

Cream cheese might not strike you as an ingredient to dress noodles, but it’s an
easy way to add flavour and body to a sauce with minimal fuss and ingredients.
The addition of soy sauce and miso paste adds an umami, salty depth. It’s the
kind of recipe that after you’ve made it once, you’ll no longer need the recipe
at all - it’s that simple.

Beef and charred spring onion noodles

This recipe utilizes a technique known as velveting, where a protein is
marinated in cornflour to make the meat soft and delicious when stir frying.
It’s a technique commonly used in Chinese cookery and in Chinese restaurants. If
you’ve ever wondered how chefs create that deliciously browned but tender meat
in stir fries or noodle dishes – this is how!

Searingly hot restaurant Mountain, in London’s Soho, scales new peaks of

Drinks: Charlotte's pumpkin pairings

The often overlooked gourd presents endless possibilities, with gently sweet
flavours that shine out in creamy and spicy savoury dishes: pair with aromatic
whites (Chenin Blanc, Viognier) as well as Beaujolais and other fruity reds. For
pumpkin-based puds, sweeter whites are a treat.
