As previously flagged by the Defence Minister, the DSR called for Australia’s defence to focus on force projection and long-range missile capabilities. “I know how hard our army works, I know how important it is to have an army that is world-class and a world-class army is one that can fight in a combined arms environment,” Mr Marles added. “Without infantry fighting vehicles, we go back to a light infantry army, which is where went after Vietnam during the 1980s and when it came time for Timor and Iraq and Afghanistan, we had a lot of hard lessons to learn.” Up Next Cancel Video paused due to user inactivity Continue watching? Yes Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie thinks the Australian Army will be “diminished” by the Defence Strategic Review as the Albanese government agrees to all 62 recommendations. “That’s a tragedy because we need a strong army going forward,” he told Sky News Australia. As previously flagged by the Defence Minister,… the DSR called for Australia’s defence to focus on force projection and long-range missile capabilities. “I know how hard our army works, I know how important it is to have an army that is world-class and a world-class army is one that can fight in a combined arms environment,” Mr Marles added. “Without infantry fighting vehicles, we go back to a light infantry army, which is where went after Vietnam during the 1980s and when it came time for Timor and Iraq and Afghanistan, we had a lot of hard lessons to learn.” Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie has again taken aim at Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan following the release of the defence strategic review. The feud between the two politicians was reignited last week after Mr McGowan was caught out on a hot mic making disparaging remarks about Mr Hastie. Mr McGowan during a trade mission to China said Mr Hastie had "swallowed some sort of Cold War pills" at birth and "couldn't get out of that mindset". In a press conference on Monday unveiling the opposition's response to the DSR, Mr Hastie was asked about Mr McGowan's criticism of his rhetoric on China. Mr Hastie, who represents the Western Australia electorate of Canning, was further pressed on whether he thought the report vindicated his language in the past. Andrew Hastie took a swipe at Mark McGowan as he held a press conference unveiling the opposition's response to the defence strategic review. He should know after last week that loose lips sink ships," he responded. "Suffice to say, he is well outside the consensus across government and across the opposition that we have to respond to the challenges in our region and that includes a rising China that's both expansionist and revisionist in its aims. "And he's the one left without a chair now that the music has stopped." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday described the DSR as the "most significant work" since World War II, adding it focuses not purely on Australia's military capabilities but on energy, cyber and economic security. Under the recommendations from the review, the government will focus resources on five key points including the defence of the nation and immediate region, deterring adversaries “through denial” and the protection of Australia's trade connections. Premier Mark McGowan was caught on a hot mic making comments against Andrew Hastie during a China-Australia Chamber of Commerce lunch. Picture: Supplied There will also be a shift towards a greater approach to protect collective security with Asian Pacific partners. As previously flagged by Defence Minister Richard Marles, the DSR called for Australia's defence to focus on force projection and long-range missile capabilities. It also pushes for a more agile and lethal navy and army with an emphasis on amphibious warfare in light of the growing threats in the Indo-Pacific. "China's assertion of sovereignty over the South China Sea threatens the global rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific in a way that adversely impacts on Australia's national interests," the review said. Mr Hastie was later asked in his press conference whether Western Australia should be building and hosting long-range missiles. Defence Strategic Review the ‘most significant work’ since WWII: Albanese Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Defence Strategic Review is the “most significant work” that has been done since World War II. Yes Defence Strategic Review the ‘most significant work’ since WWII: Albanese "We should be looking to have as much involvement as possible in defence industry. This is another area that Mark McGowan has let our state down. WA has done incredibly well out of the AUKUS announcement," he said. "We're yet to hear much from Mark McGowan in terms of advocating for WA and encouraging investment here as we uplift HMAS Stirling from a conventional base to a nuclear base over the next four years. "There is huge opportunity for education, for businesses, for the development of a supply chain here in Western Australia and he's playing silent on these issues. "We want to see more advocacy from the state government and that's certainly something I'll be doing as I play the role of dual opposition in this state." Mr Hastie also took a swipe at the federal government's response to the DSR, which was headed by former ADF chief Sir Angus Houston and ex-Labor cabinet minister Stephen Smith. "We want to ensure that we do have a strong defence force going forward and today without any increased spending and without a clear strategy, apart from the acceptance of the recommendations from the DSR, we think the government has failed," he said. "This was an important test for the government. What we're seeing is just cuts and degradation of army capability." * * * Join the conversation (47 comments) ADD YOUR COMMENT TO THIS STORY To join the conversation, please log in.
