EVENT PRESENTATION

We are delighted to invite you to an exclusive, in-person and invitation-only
event “Healthy Hopes: Reasons for optimism in science and global cooperation”
featuring the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the European Commission, the
European Investment Bank and the World Health Organization and, on Wednesday,
October 11, 2023, in Brussels.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how health issues are central to global
security, the economy and society. The pandemic showed health innovation at its
best by fast-tracking health technologies to deliver vaccines in record time.
But it was challenging to ensure these innovations reached everyone who needed
them equitably.

At this event, we invite you to imagine what is possible if we prioritize health
innovation for everyone. There are new diagnostic tests, treatments, and
vaccines in research and development that will be cheaper, more effective, and
easier to deliver. With more powerful digital technologies, the world will be
able to speed up drug development and deliver care to places healthcare
providers couldn’t reach before. And we hope that with new partnerships between
the European Commission, EIB, philanthropies and African research institutions,
we will be able to create and share more advances together so more people live
longer, healthier lives.

Please join Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, Koen Doens, Director-General at
INTPA, Caroline Gennez, Minister for Development Cooperation and Major Cities,
Belgium, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health
Organization, Dr Mainga Hamaluba*, Kenya Medical Research Institute
(KEMRI)-Wellcome Trust, Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment
Bank and Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, for a discussion on
how these institutions and African partners are working to eradicate polio and
develop groundbreaking technologies to ensure health security and development
for all citizens.
