Pictish Medieval 1900 Now
Excavations in 2005 found prehistoric plough marks here over 2 metres below the
current ground surface. They were dated to 400BC – 770BC, which pre-dates the
Picts. However, archaeological material dating to the Pictish period has been
found in soils in front of the caves and it is highly likely the Picts farmed
and lived on the coastal plain.
In 1988 and 1993, two Christian burials eroding from the coast edge were
discovered here. The first was a man, 30 to 40 years old. The second, a young
woman in her early 20s. Her bones showed signs of chronic iron deficiency and a
life of hard labour.
At low tide, you can see the remains of an outdoor swimming pool known as the
Dookin' Dub. It was created by East Wemyss miners in 1884.
There was once a doocot here which supplied fresh meat for the Laird in the 1600
and 1700s. It was washed away by a storm in 1945.
The Rosie storm outfall sewer and sea wall were constructed in the late 1980s
and destroyed by the sea in 1992. The toppled remains are a reminder of the
severity of coastal erosion here.
