MICKALENE THOMAS SPOTLIGHT

Black History Month Artist Spotlight: Mickalene Thomas

Happy Black History Month! This month, Gabrielle Mitchell-Bonds '27, Women of
Color Collective Co-Chair, will be curating a selection of Black artists to
spotlight their work and contributions to the world's cultural fabric. To kick
off this month of remembering, honoring, and building Black History, Gabrielle
has highlighted Mickalene Thomas.

Mickalene Thomas is a Brooklyn-based African American artist known for her
complex, collage-style paintings. Using materials including glitter,
rhinestones, enamel, and vibrant acrylic, Thomas structures queer African
American women subjects in poses of beauty, luxury, and power. By subverting
classical traditions of Western painting, Thomas brings forth themes of Black
female beauty, sexuality and sexual agency, striking femininity, and historical
memory. Thomas' multidisciplinary practice ultimately presents Black queer femme
desire as foundational rather than unconventional.
