Legal experts warned some shoppers could land in hot water if they refuse

WALMART shoppers have threatened to boycott self-checkout machines as fury
mounts over receipt checks.

The self-service kiosks are designed to benefit customers who want to be in and
out of the store in a flash.

Some prefer to interact with store workers while at the checkout, but others
have slammed retailers for rolling out receipt checks before shoppers leave the
store.

A post has gone viral on Facebook blasting the policy and self-checkout machines
and has been shared by dozens of shoppers.

It said: “The lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.

“I didn’t choose to participate in that nonsense as I had already: Filled my
cart, emptied my cart, scanned my items [and] refilled my cart without any
financial compensation, so I skipped the exit line and left.”

The post claimed the worker said “Excuse me” but the shopper kept walking.

The shopper fumed: “Either trust me to self-checkout or put your cashiers back
in place. It’s that simple. I’m not interested in proving that I did your job
for you.”

Walmart customers have raged that self-checkout lines should only be used for a
small number of goods.

Facebook user Scott Wells, of Colorado, called for a self-checkout boycott as he
said he prefers cashiers.

Furious Tracy Weston-Ladnow said people look at her as if she’s crazy because
she refuses to use self-checkout stations.

She said: “My main reason is it puts humans out of jobs,” before vowing she will
continue to boycott Walmart.

Barbara Johnson said she would refuse to wait in another line for a staffer to
check receipts after scanning and bagging her items herself.

Walmart does not have a policy that mandates store workers to check the receipts
of shoppers before they leave.



This is unlike Costco, which has such a policy.

Costco bosses have confirmed that the measure is purely “standard practice,” per
the retailer’s website.

They revealed the policy is the company’s most effective way of ensuring
accuracy.

Receipt checks also ensure customers have been charged appropriately, per the
retailer.







Shoppers have said they will not show their receipts, but it is not unlawful for
a store worker to make the request.



But top lawyer Aaron Marks has warned of the moment that a receipt check could
become unlawful.

In a TikTok video, he explained store workers have so-called “shopkeepers
privilege” but said they cannot use physical force to detain customers who don’t
comply with the check.

Lawyers have told The U.S. Sun that refusing to comply with a receipt check
could land customers in hot water as they risk getting banned if they refuse to
comply with a particular store’s policy.
