This order is based on the official 7-Round 2010 NFL Draft Order and the NFL
Strength of Schedule.
2010 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Picks 1-16
17. San Francisco 49ers: Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
The 49ers’ philosophy is to take the best player on their board. Anthony
Davis could fit that description. He’s been sliding lately because he was
out of shape at the Combine and reportedly interviewed poorly, but there’s
no denying his talent level. Mike Singletary may think that he can coach
Davis up, and can you blame him considering his track record? After all, he
made something out of Vernon Davis when the athletic tight end was widely
considered a major bust.
San Francisco has a huge hole at right tackle. Tony Pashos was out for the
year, while Adam Snyder allowed 9.5 sacks. Finding an upgrade here is the
49ers’ greatest priority.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: If the 49ers go with Bryan Bulaga at
No. 13, this pick will be Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson or Earl Thomas. If San
Francisco selects Haden at No. 13, Bulaga or Anthony Davis will be chosen
here.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jimmy Clausen, QB – Alex Smith lost his biggest supporter when he was
“relieved” of his duties. If the 49ers are smart, they’ll draft Jimmy
Clausen, who might be the best player available.
2. Earl Thomas, FS or Taylor Mays, SS – Mike Singletary is reportedly very
high on Taylor Mays, who would fill a need at strong safety. Earl Thomas
also addresses a need and fits the “Best Player Available” model.

MISSING
18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kyle Wilson, CB/PR, Boise State
The Steelers usually draft the best player on their board. Their previous
two picks, Ziggy Hood and Rashard Mendenhall weren’t slated to start right
away, but they were too good to pass on.
It’s tough to speculate on a team’s board, but in this scenario, it seems
as though Kyle Wilson is the top player available. There has been some
speculation that Wilson could be the first corner drafted this weekend. I
don’t really agree with that, but it still indicates that Wilson will be a
hot commodity on Draft Day.
Unlike Hood and Mendenhall, Wilson would be expected to start right
instantly. Cornerback is a huge need, as the Steelers couldn’t even stop
Bruce Gradkowski from orchestrating three fourth-quarter touchdown drives
in a crucial December game.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: It was really close between Kyle
Wilson and Mike Iupati. The Steelers will pick the top player on their
board. We don’t know who that is, but there’s some talk about Wilson being
rated higher than Joe Haden. That has to mean something.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Maurkice Pouncey, C/G or Mike Iupati, G – Maurkice Pouncey is a talented
player who could fill a huge need at right guard instantly. He could also
slide over to the center position once the 32-year-old Justin Hartwig moves
on. Mike Iupati would fill in well at right guard.
2. Rolando McClain, ILB – Inside linebackers tend to fall on Draft Day, and
I can’t see the Steelers passing up on Rolando McClain if he’s available,
even in the wake of the Larry Foote signing. Foote was added on to be a
backup because the 35-year-old James Farrior won’t be around much longer.
McClain will likely step in as a starter in 2011 next to Lawrence Timmons,
with Foote being the third inside linebacker on the depth chart.
19. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
I’m a bit torn between Sean Weatherspoon and Brandon Graham here, but
ultimately, I decided on the latter because of positional value, which
Thomas Dimitroff is a big fan of. Dimitroff has had three first-round
picks, which were spent on quarterback, left tackle and defensive tackle –
three of the five highest positions of value. Defensive end could be next.
Also, the Falcons must upgrade a pass rush that produced only 28 sacks in
2009 – that’s their No. 1 priority this offseason.
I’m concerned about Brandon Graham’s height (6-1), but there’s no denying
his talent level. He’s a tremendous pass-rusher, and he’s great against the
run. He can take Jamaal Anderson’s spot in the lineup.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Brandon Graham if he’s available. If
not, Sean Weatherspoon. Outside chance of Jerry Hughes.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Sean Weatherspoon, OLB – A very impressive weakside linebacker. He could
easily be the pick, regardless of whether or not Brandon Graham is on the
board.
2. Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB – Jerry Hughes projects as a great pass-rusher. The
Falcons could utilize him like the Redskins used Brian Orakpo last year.
20. Houston Texans: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State
The Texans are usually up front regarding what they are looking for.
Virtually everyone – from the owner down to the head coach – has stated
that addressing the running back position is a huge priority for them this
offseason. Look for Houston to draft a runner in the first two rounds this
April.
Ryan Mathews had a great Combine (6-0, 218, 4.41 40, 36-inch vertical).
He’s a really versatile back who can catch the ball out of the backfield
and block. He’s also a perfect fit for Houston’s zone-blocking offense. I
would be pretty surprised if he’s available and the Texans pass up on him.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning
News thinks Ryan Mathews goes to the Seahawks at No. 14. That’s possible.
If so, this pick will be Earl Thomas, Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty.
Mathews remains the favorite.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Earl Thomas, FS – Eugene Wilson was placed on injured reserve in the
middle of the season. Wilson has now missed 29 games in the last four
years. The Texans can no longer count on him.
2. Kyle Wilson, CB – Dunta Robinson is gone, so the cornerback position
must be addressed early in the 2010 NFL Draft.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Taylor Mays, S, USC
Taylor Mays lost a ton of money by going back to school; he was exposed
last season as a hard-hitting safety who can’t cover anyone. Fortunately,
he saved his draft stock by running an unofficial 4.24 at the Combine.
Mays is a good fit for Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s scheme.
He’ll be considered here.
A very interesting trend: Since Marvin Lewis became head coach of
Cincinnati in 2003, the Bengals have drafted four Round 1-3 USC players in
that span. Marvin clearly likes his Trojan Men.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: The Bengals love Taylor Mays – he’s a
perfect fit for their defense in a position of need. You can’t count out
Dez Bryant either. I don’t think Jermaine Gresham will be considered;
Cincinnati only takes players it brings in for a workout, and they haven’t
done that with Gresham.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Dez Bryant, WR – Another weapon for Carson Palmer. The Bengals won’t
mind Dez Bryant’s character concerns.
2. Brian Price, DT – Tank Johnson is a passable starter, but the Bengals
could use an upgrade at defensive tackle. Brian Price could easily be the
selection here.
22. New England Patriots: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
Dez Bryant’s draft stock is all over the place. Ten teams have reportedly
taken him off of their board, which could be a smokescreen. Some, such as
Josh McDaniels, have praised Bryant recently – which could also be a
smokescreen. It wouldn’t shock me if Bryant went in the teens, and it also
wouldn’t surprise me if he dropped into the 20s.
I think this is a very realistic scenario for Bryant. Bill Belichick has
brought in troubled guys and divas before (Corey Dillon, Randy Moss), and
probably would be welcome to the idea of adding Bryant to his roster. The
bottom line is that Belichick needs to obtain another weapon for Tom Brady.
Wes Welker likely won’t be ready until Thanksgiving, and a declining Randy
Moss won’t be around much longer. And I’m not putting much stock into the
Torry Holt signing; by all indications, he’s done.
Sergio Kindle would appear to be an option, but it’s worth noting that
Belichick has never spent a first-round pick on a rush linebacker.
Belichick is smart, and knows that rush linebackers have extremely high
bust rates because they didn’t play the position in college, making the
transition to the pros a very taxing one.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: The Patriots are a tough team to
predict – I say Dez Bryant. If he’s not here, Jared Odrick will probably be
the pick. I wouldn’t count out Jermaine Gresham either.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jared Odrick, DE/DT – The Patriots made a great move in acquiring
Oakland’s 2011 first-round pick for Richard Seymour. But New England now
needs a replacement for Seymour. Jared Odrick is a bit less likely (but
still in the discussion) to be chosen now in the wake of the Damione Lewis
signing.
2. Jermaine Gresham, TE – New England has nothing at tight end with the
exception of Alge Crumpler, who is more of a sixth lineman at this stage of
his career.
23. Green Bay Packers: Charles Brown, OT, USC
Even in the wake of the Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher re-signings, I still
think Charles Brown is a major option at this pick.
Aaron Rodgers received much better pass protection since losing to the
Buccaneers, but things ultimately fell apart in Arizona. Relying on Clifton
to protect Rodgers’ blind side for another year is not a good idea. Green
Bay’s No. 1 priority this offseason is finding a top-notch left tackle for
Rodgers. Ted Thompson usually opts to draft the best player available, and
you can make the argument that Brown fits that distinction here.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Rumors have been floating around that
the Packers will take a pass-rusher with this pick. The thing is, they
don’t have a need for a starting rush linebacker (depth only). But this is
Green Bay – a team that takes the best player available.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Kyle Wilson, CB – I’m starting to warm up to Kyle Wilson being the pick
if available. He is the best player available. Green Bay’s pass defense was
utterly debacled in key games last year, including the playoff loss to
Arizona. Help at corner is needed.
2. Sean Weatherspoon, ILB – The Packers go with the best player available
on their board. That could be Sean Weatherspoon, who has dropped out of
circumstance.
24. Philadelphia Eagles: Earl Thomas, FS, Texas
Earl Thomas is a tough player to project in a 2010 NFL Mock Draft. He has
the talent to go in the early teens, yet the only possible landing spot for
him is No. 12 to Miami – and he doesn’t fit Bill Parcells’ size
restrictions.
The Eagles have been collecting numerous draft choices, and it appears as
though they’ll be trading up. They don’t have anything at free safety, and
they won’t have any options at that position if they remain at No. 24. It’s
possible they could move up anywhere between 10-14 for Thomas.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: The favorite to move up into the
teens. The Eagles appear to be targeting Earl Thomas. A projection:
Philadelphia trades this pick and the second-round selection it acquired
from Washington to the Dolphins for the No. 12 choice. Miami could then
take Sergio Kindle or Jerry Hughes here.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Kyle Wilson or Kareem Jackson, CB – I thought the Eagles needed a
cornerback before they traded away Sheldon Brown. If the Eagles stand pat,
they’ll likely choose the best available corner. Moving up for Joe Haden
instead of Earl Thomas is also a possibility.
2. Mike Iupati, G – Andy Reid loves massive offensive linemen. At 6-5, 331,
Mike Iupati is certainly big enough for Big Red.
25. Baltimore Ravens: Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Penn State
To steal something I recently wrote in my 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Dwan Edwards
is gone, while Justin Bannan signed with the Broncos. Suddenly, Baltimore’s
defensive line is a little thin. Jared Odrick is one of the top players
available and would be a great fit in the Ravens’ defense.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Ozzie Newsome will take the best
player on his board. Many mocks are projecting that to be Demaryius Thomas.
I don’t see it. Newsome is too smart to take a receiver who can’t run
routes or catch the ball consistently.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jermaine Gresham, TE – The Ravens can’t rely on Todd Heap much longer.
Jermaine Gresham would give Joe Flacco yet another dynamic target.
2. Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty, CB – The team that committed the most
pass interference penalties in the NFL will be looking for a cornerback
early in the 2010 NFL Draft. Kyle Wilson and Devin McCourty are options.
26. Arizona Cardinals: Sean Weatherspoon, ILB, Missouri
I have no idea what the Cardinals are thinking. They had a chance to trade
for Donovan McNabb, who would have been a perfect fit for their offense.
Now, they can only replace Kurt Warner with the erratic Derek Anderson or
Matt Leinart. I guess the Nick Lachey Hot Tub Offense appeals to them.
If losing Warner wasn’t bad enough, Arizona also bid farewell to Karlos
Dansby and Anquan Boldin. Luckily, a substitute for the former happens to
fall into the Cardinals’ lap in this version of my 2010 NFL Mock Draft.
Sean Weatherspoon is a natural 4-3 weakside linebacker, but he could also
be very effective in the middle of a 3-4. He’ll take Dansby’s spot and
offer his tremendous leadership to an Arizona defense that surrendered 90
points in its final two games last year.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: You can’t rule out Jimmy Clausen, but
I say the favorite is Sean Weatherspoon to replace Karlos Dansby. You can’t
have Paris Lenon as one of your starting linebackers.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jimmy Clausen, QB – Why not Jimmy Clausen? He would be the logical
choice. However, Arizona made an illogical decision this offseason when it
didn’t even entertain the idea of trading for Donovan McNabb. This tells me
the coaching staff is willing to roll the dice with Matt Leinart and Derek
Anderson. I think that’s insane, but McNabb would have made so much sense.
2. Anthony Davis, OT – Offensive tackle is a huge need for the 49ers.
Anthony Davis could drop this far because of his character concerns.

27. Dallas Cowboys: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
Jerry Jones has never spent a first-round pick on an offensive lineman. But
the No. 27 overall selection is close enough to the second round that Jones
could change his mind. After all, he did take guard Steve Wisniewski with
the No. 29 pick 21 years ago (back then, that pick was a second-rounder.)
So, will the difference between pick Nos. 29 and 27 prevent Jones from
drafting Mike Iupati? I don’t think so.
Iupati makes too much sense here. He’s the type of mauling offensive
lineman Dallas loves to have up front. The Cowboys need help at the
position. It’s a perfect match, and I found it highly amusing that the
Dallas Morning News reported that the entire Cowboys coaching staff “perked
up” when Iupati’s name was announced for the Senior Bowl Weigh-Ins.
Iupati had a great week of Senior Bowl practices, but he really struggled
in pass protection during the game. He has a ton of upside, but he’s still
raw. I’d be surprised to see him go much higher than this (i.e. No. 17 to
the 49ers).
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Some mocks are projecting the Cowboys
to pick a receiver. I don’t see Jerry Jones doing that with Miles Austin
and the money he has invested in Roy Williams. Mike Iupati should be the
pick if available.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Safety – Either Taylor Mays or Nate Allen would work here. The Cowboys
have to upgrade the free safety position. They may trade up for Earl
Thomas.
2. Maurkice Pouncey, C/G – I have Maurkice Pouncey going to the Broncos at
No. 11, but he could also be available here; he has that wide of a draft
range. Adding Pouncey would allow the Cowboys to move Andre Gurode to left
guard. Gurode has mental lapses at times, so he could be a better fit at
left guard.
28. San Diego Chargers: Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
The Chargers cut Jamal Williams, which means they have to address the nose
tackle position early in the 2010 NFL Draft. General manager A.J. Smith is
always difficult to figure out, but it would be a huge surprise if he
didn’t take a nose tackle with one of his top two picks.
Terrence Cody saved his draft stock by trimming down to 354 for the Combine
and 349 for his Pro Day.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: The Chargers always surprise us on
Draft Day. If Ryan Mathews is off the board, the top six prospects I
believe San Diego will be targeting are (in no specific order): Terrence
Cody, Linval Joseph, Tyson Alualu, Ben Tate, Devin McCourty and Kareem
Jackson.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Ryan Mathews or Ben Tate, RB – Ryan Mathews is the type of back the
Chargers are looking for. If the Texans pass on him, he’ll be the pick. I
also want to throw Ben Tate out there. He’s the perfect running back for
this offense. Sure, it would be a pick out of left field, but that’s just
how A.J. Smith does things.
2. Devin McCourty or Kareem Jackson, CB – Antoine Cason moaned and groaned
when he was benched as a nickel last year, and San Diego’s coaching staff
reportedly didn’t like his attitude.
Pick change; previously Ryan Mathews, RB
MISSING
29. New York Jets: Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
New York just signed Jason Taylor, so scratch off Jerry Hughes and Sergio
Kindle as possibilities.
The Jets could go a number of directions here, one of which is cornerback.
They acquired Antonio Cromartie from the Chargers, but he’s a player with
off-the-field concerns (and on-the-field concerns) who is entering his
contract year. If Cromartie works out for them, that’s great. If not, a
corner opposite Darrelle Revis would be a huge need.
Devin McCourty is an option, but the rising Kareem Jackson appears to be a
better fit for Rex Ryan’s defense.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: The Jets draft wisely. They figure out
which prospect they want, and they trade up for him. I’m thinking Jared
Odrick could be that guy.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jared Odrick, DE/DT – I don’t think Jared Odrick will be here, but if he
is, he’s unlikely to get past the Jets. They need to add some talent and
youth to their aging defensive line, so they may consider trading up for
Odrick.
2. Linval Joseph, NT, East Carolina – Linval Joseph is reportedly rising on
many draft boards and could be chosen in Round 1. Rex Ryan may see Joseph
as sort of a poor man’s Haloti Ngata.
Pick change; previously Devin McCourty, CB
30. Minnesota Vikings: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
And this is why the Vikings are perennial playoff contenders and the Bills
haven’t made the postseason in more than a decade. What a steal.
Many, including Adam Schefter, are reporting that Jimmy Clausen is due for
a freefall today. Schefter believes Clausen will go to the Vikings at No.
30. Remember, this is the guy who went out on a limb and called Sam
Bradford to the Rams when everyone else had Ndamukong Suh and Jimmy
Clausen.
Clausen should not be discouraged if he goes this low. In fact, this is the
best possible situation for him. He can sit behind Brett Favre for a year
or two and learn from one of the NFL’s all-time greats. That certainly
worked for Aaron Rodgers.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Viking fans should be dancing in the
streets if their team can get Jimmy Clausen. If not, I think this is a
corner.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Devin McCourty or Kareem Jackson, CB – The Vikings really need a
cornerback. Cedric Griffin tore his ACL in the NFC Championship.
2. Brian Price, DT – Might be considered the best player available. Pat
Williams won’t be around much longer.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana
Even though the defensive side of the ball has been the weaker half of
Indianapolis’ roster, general manager Bill Polian has spent seven of his 10
first-round picks on offensive players.
One area of weakness on offense for the Colts is the offensive line. Left
tackle, right tackle and right guard can all be upgraded. I have to believe
the Colts will be searching for a left tackle in the early stages of the
2010 NFL Draft. Charlie Johnson did a solid job last year, but he’s not a
franchise left tackle.
Rodger Saffold displayed his athleticism at the Combine, running a 5.22 in
the 40 and looking fluid in the drills. He definitely has left tackle
potential in the NFL.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: I like Rodger Saffold or Charles Brown
here. Bill Polian loves drafting offensive players.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Offensive Players – I think the Colts are going offense at No. 31. If
they don’t take a left tackle (Rodger Saffold, Charles Brown), they may
select Maurkice Pouncey if he’s available. Also, don’t count out Jahvid
Best. Joseph Addai will be a free agent next offseason, and Best offers a
dimension that even Indianapolis’ offense currently lacks (which is pretty
scary).
2. Defensive Linemen – Brian Price and Everson Griffen are available in
this mock, and both would be excellent choices at this juncture.
32. New Orleans Saints: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
With Scott Fujita defecting for Cleveland, New Orleans’ two biggest needs
are now defensive end and strongside linebacker. Coincidentally, Sergio
Kindle can play both.
Kindle could be utilized like fellow Longhorn Brian Orakpo was used in
Washington in 2009. Depending on the situation, Kindle could drop into
coverage or rush the passer from the defensive end position. I’m sure Gregg
Williams would love to have someone with Kindle’s versatility on the
roster.
The Saints had 35 sacks last year, but 13 of those came from Will Smith.
They signed Alex Brown, and while he excels against the run, he’s not much
of a pass-rusher.
2010 NFL Draft Day – Final Thoughts: Drew Brees will be announcing this
pick if that means anything to you. I believe the Saints will be targeting
Sergio Kindle, Jerry Hughes or Sean Weatherspoon.
Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Sean Weatherspoon, OLB – Fills a need as a weakside linebacker and would
be a fan favorite. Tough call between Sergio Kindle and Weatherspoon if
both are available, but the Saints need to improve their pass rush.
2. Brian Price, DT – Brian Price is a talented player who fills a big need
as a defensive tackle next to Sedrick Ellis.
