WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AT DURHAM
Mathematical Sciences at Durham offers a unique blend of high-quality teaching
and research in Applied & Computational Mathematics, Mathematical & Theoretical
Particle Physics, Pure Mathematics, Probability and Statistics. We pride
ourselves on combining world-leading research with a dedication to the learning
experience of our undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Our curriculum and degree structure is monitored and regularly updated to
provide students with the best possible mathematical and general skills,
equipping them for a rapidly changing professional environment. Our degree
portfolio has recently been enriched to offer the possibility of a year in
industry and a new route in statistics that will give interested students
practical experience of problem solving in a commercial environment.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
We offer various undergraduate courses which allow choice from a wide spectrum
of pure mathematics, applied mathematics (including mathematical physics) and
statistics.
POSTGRADUATE STUDY
We currently offer three taught postgraduate degrees which offer a gateway to a
variety of careers and a natural pathway to a PhD.

Research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences is organised into a number
of research groups. We are also members of various scientific networks,
addressing a wide selection of topics from the mathematics of climate change to
geometric group theory.

Our new, purpose built home realises an imaginative design that provides an
inspiring environment for mathematical research and scholarly activities of the
highest standards.
It has been created to enhance the staff-student relationship and give our
students a strong sense of belonging as well as fostering constructive
interdisciplinary exchanges, both with industrial partners and with colleagues
based in other departments.
