SOCIAL MEDIA & MENTAL HEALTH LaurieLovesLearning ModeratorManitoba, Canada 🍁 zone 3, PrairiesPosts: 6,158 admin August 31 in Mental Health We should all remain aware and alert to this in ourselves, our friends and families. The negative impact is very widespread as many of you know. Unfortunately, those who already suffer from these things can be affected even more so by social media. Social media can have good, but it needs to be tightly controlled and never control its user. It is okay to leave your screen (in whatever form), off or leave it behind. You will be happier & you will also find as a bonus that you get more done. Especially, turning off the screens sometimes. But... at the same time we would not be able to share the valuable information that we all share here. LOL A catch 22. 0 · Share on Twitter * LaurieLovesLearning Moderator Manitoba, Canada 🍁 zone 3, PrairiesPosts: 6,158 admin September 1 edited September 1 @vickeym You are correct. That's why I said it can be good (and I am grateful I can learn & keep in touch with some folks), but it should never have control. It should be a tool, not a need. It just can't fulfill what people need to truly be happy. I've seen what damage it can do and how it creates problems. Where I think the biggest danger lies in the social media world is the "instant" gratification, look at me social media overload & attitude ones, like FB, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok & all the other flashy new platforms. 0 · Share on Twitter * Michelle D Posts: 962 ✭✭✭✭ September 1 I do not really participate with the mainstream social media platforms. I see many more opportunities for harm than good with them. I prefer to spend my screen time on places like this. So many great people here and so much to learn. I have one adult family member that struggles with anxiety and depression. She spends time on most of the more popular social media site. I sent the link over to her. Hopefully she can find a way to move away from some of it. 1 · Share on Twitter * dipat2005 Posts: 926 ✭✭✭✭ September 1 Thank you for starting this discussion. It is very important to know where the positive social media sites are and how to use them positively. I only use two and one of them is a neighborhood site and the other is the Grow Network. I learned years ago that other popular sites can be frustrating and have more recently learned they have an agenda. I learn so many things and can be a contributing member of this site and that is more important to me and to others on this site. Why not use this site to impart knowledge which is what I am doing. I will get off my rant now. 1 · Share on Twitter * shllnzl Southwestern UtahPosts: 1,759 ✭✭✭✭✭ September 4 Another aspect of mental health and online computing: search bots will note your search subject and then funnel thousands of references to you about your subject. This can be devastating when the subject is suicide, mass shootings, etc. Suddenly, the user sees a world where everyone is thinking the same way. 1 · Share on Twitter * LaurieLovesLearning Moderator Manitoba, Canada 🍁 zone 3, PrairiesPosts: 6,158 admin September 4 @shllnzl That is a very good point. 0 · Share on Twitter * Cornelius Posts: 778 ✭✭✭✭ September 5 This is definitely a very relevant discussion. I personally try my best to avoid them as well, but will use them as a tool when needed. Setting time limits can also help rein in some of the usage and also going outside, reading books, etc. 1 · Share on Twitter * jowitt.europe Moderator Posts: 1,114 admin September 5 @LaurieLovesLearning thank you for starting this discussion. It can be devastating as @shllnzl says. If you look for something negative, you get more and more to feed that dark side of the soul. But it is useful, when one needs some specific information. Sometimes I do a search on purpose to get more posts or blogs on the topic. Or when I am looking for good offers for accommodation somewhere where we are about to travel. one can tune the positive “delivery of information “ by searching for something positive - e.g. healing herbs 😊 Me too @Cornelius I use it social media more as a tool. @Michelle D It is difficult to help someone suffering from negative media. May be taking the person for walks in nature. That usually clears the mind and helps seeing things in a much more positive way… 0 · Share on Twitter * Monek Marie Moderator Posts: 3,272 admin September 5 I use the internet for research and some social interaction. (like this safe community) I use facebook mainly to keep in touch with family. I find it draining for other conversation. As for news, I have almost turned totally away from it. I am tired of the drama. Social media and the internet have so many good pints. Its just learning how to use it And how much you and family can deal with it. Great topic 1 · Share on Twitter * VermontCathy Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭✭✭ September 6 This applies to all forms of news. It's a tricky situation, because we need to know what is going on in our countries and the world in order to plan and prepare, but if we follow it too closely we will get depressed instead of energized. I try to find the balance, checking it occasionally but not following it nearly as closely as I once did. 2 · Share on Twitter * JoAnn Posts: 4 ✭✭✭ September 7 It is very surprising how many people I know have not had anyone close to them with a mental health problem. Everyone should try to learn more about it but you know, there are just so many diagnosis and affects others so differently, so how to learn about it all? Just Be Nice. If one is standing right infront, face to face with someone else, are you going to say negative things on social media? More than likely not if you are a genuinely nice person. It is really hard these days. So we need to think about what we say and who we are saying it to. If you post on your page and you post to "Friends" - just because they are your friends does not mean you aren't hurting them by what you have said. Tough situation. I use a couple social platforms to stay connected to family and very close friends and I rarely post. I use them more for information, like herbal information, cooking, funny jokes, and the like. I don't "collect" "friends" just cuz I know their cousin or the cousin's 2nd wife's brother. If everyone would post like they were standing right infront of the people on their friend list, social media would be much easier for those with mental health issues - and for preventing them. 1 · Share on Twitter WELCOME!
