COVID TENTS HAVE EXPANDED THEIR REPERTOIRE

Alyson KruegerReporting from Manhattan

Jordan Macy for The New York Times

They have become a fixture in New York City. And now, as the holidays approach
and the temperature drops, many Covid testing pop-ups are also checking for the
flu and R.S.V.

I visited a few of them in Union Square recently. Here’s what I found →

Many pop-ups are run by private businesses. One of them, EZ Test NY, has been
testing for all three diseases since August. Only one nasal swab is needed to
check for everything.

It’s free if you have health insurance, and $149 if you don’t.

Jennifer Patten, who works for a television company, stopped by a Union Square
tent on her way to work. “I am visiting my future mother-in-law this week who is
going through chemo,” she said. “It’s crucial to not forget about the other
diseases in addition to Covid.”

“Some people come back every other day to make sure they don’t have anything,”
said Zaima Garcia, 42, a tester from Coney Island. And sometimes they ask for
other services, she said: “They ask for the Covid vaccine. They ask me if I’m
testing for monkeypox.”

Starting today, the city is expanding free flu, Covid and R.S.V. testing with a
fleet of 50 vans. For more information, visit nyc.gov.

“I worked through Omicron,” Sofia Saleh, another tester, told me. “I feel like
the flu season this winter can be just as bad.”
