"Thank you so much for your wonderful ebook. I have read it from (virtual) cover
to cover over the past few days. The language! The way you write is just
incredible. So creative, so evocative, and yet eerily precise. And what a
wholesome mix is your book of personal experience, humor, clinical insight,
philosophical clarity, and existential doubt. On top of that, it is also very
practical and grounded, starting from the distinction you make between psychotic
experiences and the behaviour they evoke, to coping strategies, and all the way
down to the sweat on the brow of scientists who develop antipsychotic
medications. I find it hard to single out one particular aspect that I enjoyed
the most, but I think I am primarily in awe of your highly personal existential
philosophy. Having some experience with people who suffered from psychosis, and
having thus gained an impression of how hard it is for most of them to rise
above their erratic convictions (not to mention the 'sane' and their inability
to rise above theirs) I am deeply impressed by the way you manage to juggle
several alternative world views, and meanwhile keep perfect track of that which
our society considers normal and acceptable and true. As to God, and all the
theological and metaphysical issues you so delicately touch upon, I admire how
you succeed in sharing with your readership the sheer impact of your humorous
yet holy encounters, if I may call them so, without expressing the need to
generalize or patronize or preach. Going by the way you describe those
encounters, I would find it hard to believe that anyone with similar experiences
would dismiss them as 'merely psychotic' in nature. And yet they are so far
beyond all that we can comprehend, that it is indeed only rational to set them
apart as 'personal experiences', the way you do, and to not even attempt to
convince others of whatever you may think they actually were. Your wisdom came
with a hefty price, or so I have learned, but wisdom it most certainly is." -Jan

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert Francis was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1995. He earned a bachelor's
degree in 1993 and a master's degree in social work in 2006. Francis has been
practicing as a talk-therapist for more than a decade. He is currently a
licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

Francis was diagnosed with schizophrenia circa 1995. He obtained his Bachelor of
Arts in 1993 and his Master of Social Work in 2006. Francis has been practicing
as a talk-therapist for over a decade. His current professional status is that
of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Based on his personal experience
with schizophrenia as combined with his clinical acumen, Francis offers a rare
perspective on successfully overcoming mental illness. In On Conquering
Schizophrenia, Francis offers a breakthrough paradigm in the conceptualization
of schizophrenia and in promotion of efficacious psychiatric recovery. Francis
continues to experience issues with psychosis but he also continues to gainfully

Hello, dear interested readers! “How is your mental health today?” The quoted
question is an example of the sharp and smart, occasional humor the author uses
in his book. I feel honored to have “met” the author by reading his book, and I
consider him a hero (although I am convinced that if he were to respond, he
would wish to discuss and philosophize on the definition). A hero for being able
to develop "the insight", as he termed it, on how to manage with the symptoms of
schizophrenia and live what we call “a normal life”. A hero for others who are
in the same place where he is and, by reading his book, would realize that they
too could manage it. As for the rest of us, whose mental health is within the
normal range at this time, I could not say it any better than other reviewers
already did: “This book causes you to re-examine the way you look at life” and
“this book is ultimately about life and the nature of reality”.
It is one thing to read in textbooks or websites about the symptoms of
schizophrenia, and another thing to have it described so vividly by someone who
lives with it: “Simply stated, I can no longer trust my perceptions.
Schizophrenia is proof that perception does not always equate to
reality”…”Psychosis is like holding on for dear life at the end of an ignited
rocket ship.” ….”trapped in a punitive labyrinth with no availing Tao for
escape. There simply is “No Exit”… “I often think my psychotic experiences are
the physical equivalent of being repeatedly slammed into a wall”.
By recognizing, analyzing, and understanding the symptoms and their temporal
occurrence, along with the many “variables of the illness”, “insight” gradually
develops: From every psychotic experience “I retain the lesson but not the
wound”… “I have become comfortable with perceptual ambiguity. I have become
comfortable on the fence of reality”. With insight, along with taking the
necessary “leap of faith” and concluding the existence of God, the author has
conquered schizophrenia: “aaah sweet Kierkegaard…a treasured companion of mine!
With you, I too will leap!”…“my psychological shelter and philosophical umbrella
entails living the leap of faith”.

This book was recommended to me by a highly respected professional colleague in
the behavioral/mental health field. Once I started reading it was hard to put
down. I found myself going back to reread and underline passages, concepts and
insights that are profoundly applicable to anyone dealing with a chronic health
challenge that requires one to accept, adapt and steady one's emotional
intelligence, self-compassion, thought processes, and point of view to truly
embrace the duties of daily self-care in mundane life and remain open to the
possibilities of transcendental spirituality. Whether one is dealing with an
all-encompassing illness like schizophrenia, cancer, heart disease, multiple
sclerosis, ALS or diabetes something is misfiring or malfunctioning on a
physiological level in the human body/mind complex. However, the "disease" we
live with is not all that we are and does not necessarily define our individual
personhood. What makes us spiritual and divine happens on another level within
us during our life experience that is not the "disease" we are somehow destined
to carry and live with. The "disease" can be the catalyst for profound spiritual
awakening and healing. This book is touches on the metaphysical that transcends
physical & psychological limitations. As a mental health nurse living with type
1 diabetes since childhood, I have found insight and hope for myself and for the
people I care for as patients.

This is a very important book and not only because it is an authentic and first
hand account of what schizophrenia is like. It is also important because the
fact that it originated in a personal struggle, with what is at times a
confusing condition, imbues it with wisdom. In that sense, I found it all the
more compelling because for me this book is ultimately about life and nature of
reality. In other words, the writer demonstrates how insight wins over
confusion, which is relevant for all.

The first 6 chapters take a reader through what makes us "human" in a sense, and
first six chapters offer the theoretical foundation to the author's
conceptualization of the malady termed schizophrenia. What follows is a
pragmatic approach on his personal strategy to overcome what the malady brings
to life and offers significant hope to those who are afflicted by this illness
and for those who provide care to those with schizophrenia, professionals,
caregivers and family and friends. It is a remarkably different book on
schizophrenia, one that should be read, and perhaps re-read.

The author provides us with a nontraditional description and view of
schizophrenia. The four chapters take the reader on a tour visiting familiar
religious and metaphysical views. This approach stands in contrast to the
contemporary understanding of the disorder emanating solely from a medical model
perspective. The author convinces us that schizophrenia is much, much more. The
chapters reveal a personalized description that immerses the reader in a way of
thinking, a view of the world and the complexity that is hardly described in
even the best mental status exam. I recommend this essay to those looking for an
alternative view and glimps into the experience.

The author tells a very personal and powerful story of living with
Schizophrenia. The story goes beyond the textbook definition of Schizophrenia
and takes you into a world of lived experience, through all of the existential
questions and answers wile eventually finding the path toward personal meaning.
I applaud the author for conveying the message that recovery is possible and
that despite a diagnosis of mental illness, a meaningful life is attainable.
