Businesses that have started toward the beyond-dashboard world are delivering
data to the employees that need it, when they need it, and are moving more
quickly.




At Google Cloud, we know that the trusty dashboard has brought plenty of data
points to tech executives over the years—and still does. But it often doesn’t
reflect real-time insights as new data becomes available within a few seconds or
minutes.

As data proliferates and the pressure to gain insights increases, today’s
workers are looking for more immersive experiences embedded in their business
workflows as part of a growing need to collaborate around data. Traditional
dashboards have failed to keep up with these new demands, with data across
sources, silos, and apps getting stale very quickly. Sharing insights securely
is complicated and getting the right numbers without a single source of truth is
a big task.



At Google Cloud, we know that the trusty dashboard has brought plenty of data
points to tech executives over the years—and still does. Many companies still
use them, in addition to spreadsheets, for the majority of their business
intelligence (BI) and analytics tasks. A traditional data dashboard can bring
you a snapshot of a moment in time, such as sales numbers for a given month. But
it often doesn’t reflect real-time insights as new data becomes available within
a few seconds or minutes. 




TO SUPPORT BETTER DECISION-MAKING FOR YOUR USERS AND BUSINESS, IT’S TIME TO
THINK BEYOND THE DASHBOARD.

Instead, consider rich data experiences, where data is infused into the existing
day-to-day workflows of employees. These new, rich data experiences depend on an
open platform that scales as business needs evolve. They use real-time data and
a semantic model, and go farther than traditional charts and graphs.



These rich data experiences also take into account the needs of the humans
interacting with all this data. Analytics consumers in a business should be able
to interact with data in their natural context, whether that’s data
visualizations infused into an internal app, using a chatbot to ask questions of
their data, or real-time alerts on unexpected spikes in web traffic or employee
activity.

Meanwhile, a financial analyst should be able to work in their beloved
spreadsheet environments, but seamlessly connect to any size data, not just what
fits in the tools’ row limit. In addition, line of business leaders may want a
custom-built application, infused with data and created with a low-code or
no-code framework. Here’s a look at one way that can work:

HOW TO MOVE BEYOND DASHBOARDS

Augmented analytics experiences are already possible—how they work in practice
will vary depending on your business, users, and technology tools. They should
help your business become more agile, able to respond faster to trends and
sudden changes. There are a couple of considerations to look for when rethinking
how to harness and use data in new ways:



 * Integrate data and insights into existing workflows, so new, self-service
   information is easy to access in the way that works best for each consumer,
   whether that’s an app, spreadsheet, dashboard, or chatbot; 
 * Connect to your data no matter where it is, and incorporate it into your
   organization's data model so it's always fresh and unified;  
 * Create a governed, intelligent, and reliable deployment model for data-based
   apps, enabling scale even with high data volume and lots of real-time action;
 * Optimize existing workflows with data, so any clunky or outdated processes
   can work better; and
 * Define data and business logic to automate actions, such as alerts, when
   certain criteria are met. 




BETTER DECISIONS, FASTER: THE FUTURE OF DATA EXPERIENCES

As new app creation and structured data grow, businesses will have to tackle
these challenges to stay ahead of the pace of doing business today. With the
right tools in place, we can capture the right insights and benefit from
integrated data. Ultimately, data won’t be taken off the shelf as needed, but
will be embedded everywhere a business user needs it to be. To achieve this, new
tools should enable a semantic model to use multiple clouds; include real-time
analytics capabilities to stream in relevant data; be API-based for maximum
flexibility; and offer simple ways for developers to customize data for users,

We’ve seen the market moving quickly beyond augmented to customers building rich
data experiences for employees and external stakeholders. Analytics customer Wix

Businesses that have started toward the beyond-dashboard world are delivering
data to the employees that need it, when they need it, and are moving more
quickly. We’ve heard from customer Diamond Resorts, which had to navigate sudden
and rapid changes in hospitality due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year. They
recently chose to modernize their data stack on Google Cloud, and their team was
up and running with real-time insights from Looker in just three months. Their
teams can access the data they need where they need it to make faster, better
decisions.

What data experiences can you start building for your teams? Start with
establishing the business insights that end users need to do their job, and work
from there, rather than trying to fit outdated dashboards to modern needs.
