PATRYCJA BARTKOWIAK

PHD STUDENT - CMAC

"RAPID, GREEN AND SELF-OPTIMISING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING OF MEDICINES"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

She is pursuing a PhD student at CMAC, a world leading centre for medicine
manufacturing research. Joined University of
Strathclyde in 2017 and graduated with BSc Hons in Chemistry with Advanced Drug
Discovery and MSc in Advanced Drug
Delivery. Currently, her research is based on self-optimisation methods with
additive manufacturing to realise a desired
release profile of medicines with personalised drug dosage by optimising the
tablet microstructure and AM process
settings.

The use of 3D printing for pharmaceutical applications has gained significant
interest in recent years. Individualized dosage forms tailored to patient needs
can increase the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy. Fused Deposition
Modelling (FDM) 3D printing utilizes soluble polymers (e.g., PVA) as a drug
carrier. This method provides a unique opportunity for individualized drug
development. However, several limitations are associated with the mechanical
properties of pharmaceutically graded filament, nozzle size, printing
temperature, and failures during the printing process (e.g., nozzle clogging,
warping, poor quality/low resolution of the printed object) in achieving the
desired shape, dosage, and release profile of the tablet. Consequently, the
development of a filament with mechanical characteristics that fulfil
printability requirements, the design of the geometry, and the selection of
process parameters are crucial for the success of 3D printing. This research
focuses on utilizing 3D printing technology for pharmaceutical applications,
specifically the development of individualized dosage forms. The study involves
creating a mathematical model of the tablet and exploring the relationship
between surface area to volume ratio (SA/V) and drug release profile. Different
internal microstructures, such as gyroid, will be incorporated into the tablet
design, and a self-optimization algorithm will be used to determine the optimal
tablet size to the given weight. Various polymers and APIs will be used to 3D
print tablets, which will then undergo testing to assess their performance,
mechanical integrity, and release profile. The ultimate goal is to optimize
virtual design parameters to create tablets that meet the required
specifications with minimal experimental workload.

THOMAS CORNTHWAITE

UK OPERATIONS - DIMANEX

"THE CHALLENGES AND REWARDS OF SCALING SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSFORMATION THROUGH
DIGITISATION AND ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

With a background in Product Design and Engineering, Thomas is UK Operations
lead for DiManEx, a leading platform-based company that delivers supply chain
performance optimisation - from digitisation, analytics, re-engineering to
production - through additive manufacturing.

Increasingly, additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, is used in
supply chains to reduce costs, lead times and environmental impacts. Assessing
the case for using it and knowing where to begin on the journey can be
challenging. Many items are not suitable to be produced through additive
manufacturing for technical or economic reasons, and analysing the full
catalogue of materials to identify the viable ones is an obstacle for time and
resource-stretched organisations. This talk will cover those challenges,
describing the steps and analytics tools available to firms, from SMEs to
multinationals, to overcome them and to maximise the benefits of using additive
manufacturing in their supply chains.

DR. JAMES CROSBY

HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY - ADVANTAGE UTILITIES

"ONSITE GENERATION AND EFFICIENCY – THE ECONOMICALLY FRUITFUL PATHWAY TO
NET-ZERO"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dr. James Crosby is Head of Sustainability at Advantage Utilities. With a Ph.D
in Geochemistry, Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences from the University
of Cambridge, Dr. Crosby now offers business support to a range of companies who
are looking to achieve net-zero and manage their energy cost through sustainable
energy solutions.

Businesses across the UK currently face some of the greatest challenges in their
history – managing high energy costs and transitioning to net-zero emissions.
Currently, the vast majority of business operations are powered by energy
dominantly supplied from the grid. This supply has been at record high levels
and remains a highly pollutive source of consumption. Here, Dr James Crosby
outlines how business can integrate two key philosophies as cornerstones of
their transition to net zero and decreasing their energy costs. a. The greenest
form of energy generation is the most affordable method of consumption – this
relates to onsite generation. b. The cheapest and greenest form of energy is
that which is not consumed at all – this relates to onsite efficiency

students with the skills they need for these careers, some of which don’t even
exist yet? This talk would look at how industry can collectively work together
with education providers to contextualise learning for students and excite them
about careers in engineering and manufacturing. If industry leaves this for
schools alone then the problem will, unfortunately, only get worse.

MALCOLM WARR

CHAIR - CNI SCOTLAND

"WHAT IS OUR DIGITAL FUTURE? RHETORICAL APPROACH TO SIMULATE"

Speaker Bio

"At school I was inspired by a lecture on security and intelligence given by
Admiral John Godfrey who was the model for James Bond “M”. This led into a
marine and security career, firstly in the Royal Navy in logistics and into the
top tier of asset acquisition and through life support, and subsequently in
industry.

I have worked in Government departments, as part of Corporate Project Review
teams, as Managing Director of SME security and maritime enterprises in the UK
and abroad, and for corporate manufacturing businesses in aerospace, defence,
security and in R&D.

In helping to position Scotland as a key player in these industries, I mentor ex
service people via X-Forces and individually.

As a naturally inquisitive team player, I work to place people together with the
best information and experience to make the right decisions for long-term
benefit.

I am particularly interested in evolving supply chain challenges both digital
and physical, and with the upskilling of workforces in both the shipbuilding and
offshore infrastructure industries and cyber security sector.

Humbly, I claim that my varied career has made me an expert in nothing but has
given quite a good awareness of the total picture and some of the pitfalls."

ZEVI WATMOUGH

SUSTAINABILITY SPOKESPERSON - LEONARDO UK

"EMPOWERING THE INDIVIDUAL TO DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY IN LARGE CORPORATIONS"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Zevi Watmough is Sustainability Spokesperson for aerospace engineering company
Leonardo UK. With diverse experience in communications and broadcasting, Zevi
has a keen interest in issues surrounding sustainability, social value, science,
technology and equal access to opportunities.
After studying English to postgraduate level at Edinburgh University, Zevi took
a job in recruitment as a first step into the workplace. However, rather than
settling for the obvious path, as her 30th birthday approached she seized an
opportunity to pursue her love of writing by becoming a cub reporter at her
local newspaper. One year later Zevi was selected as one of the winners of a
national TV talent competition and spent the following five years working as a
TV and Radio reporter at the BBC. She was nominated for a Scottish Bafta for her
role presenting the flagship BBC arts series, Artworks Scotland.
Zevi’s background in journalism paved the way for a second career in
communications: she now works at Leonardo UK covering a range of people, purpose
and society-focused issues, leading on regional media engagement and acting as a
spokesperson for the company on sustainability. She has found the aerospace
engineering industry to offer her a dynamic and stimulating environment in which
to work and has enjoyed raising awareness of how innovation can address the
challenges of carbon footprint reduction in the 21st century.
Leonardo has 51,000 employees globally including 8,000 in the UK, of which 2,000
are based at its site in Edinburgh. The company is best known nationally for its
onshore production of UK military helicopters and the cutting-edge electronics
on-board Royal Air Force aircraft.

Leonardo UK is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030 for Scope 1 and 2
emissions and by 2050 across its value chain. In her presentation, Zevi will
share insights into the company’s strategy for sustainability, which has seen it
achieve the highest score ranking within the international Aerospace & Defense
industry, according to the Dow Jones Corporate Sustainability Assessment as of
December 9th, 2022. Zevi will describe how Leonardo has structured its
sustainability strategy around the three pillars of People, Planet and
Prosperity and make the case for empowering individuals to experiment and
explore new routes for sustainability to accelerate organisational
transformation in this area.

GORDON WATSON

PROFESSOR OF MARINE ZOOLOGY - UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH

"OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY: ASSESSING METAL INPUTS AND THE RISKS FOR CO-LOCATION OF
AQUACULTURE."

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Gordon is a benthic marine ecologist investigating the interaction of humans
with marine systems through pollution, exploitation and management. His research
uses benthic species and habitats to assess the role of management in protection
from exploitation through fisheries and aquaculture as well as the impacts of
key pollutants.

Co-locating aquaculture with Offshore Wind farms (OWFs) is a novel global
sustainability policy driver. However, metals from turbine corrosion-protection
systems could generate significant economic, ecosystem and human health risks.
We calculate European metal inputs (t y-1) for current OWF capacity (30 GW) as:
3,173 aluminium, 539 zinc and 1.1 indium, but these will increase ~10x by 2050,
eclipsing known discharges. A paucity of industry data makes it impossible to
compare water and sediment metal concentrations at operational OWFs against
toxicity thresholds, therefore, ecotoxicological risks are not assessed. Metal
accumulation in seafood is a major human exposure route. Accumulated high tissue
concentrations in oysters, mussels and kelp during co-location culture would
contribute significantly or greatly exceed (e.g. oyster accumulation of zinc) an
adult’s Tolerable Weekly Intake. To minimise unintended consequences/risks of
rapid global OWF expansion we provide industry and regulators with a ‘road map’
for implementing policy changes.
