Will the 2024 CMA Entertainer of the Year winner shock us once again, or will a
previous winner take the trophy?

Who will get the call to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this
year? Which new artist is truly one to watch, and what's in store for Oliver
Anthony, who broke out in 2023?

Some of these country music predictions for 2024 are based on intense research,
background information and astute observations by experts in the genre.

We're just guessing about the rest.

Morgan Wallen, Jelly Roll and Trisha Yearwood (maybe) are three more country
stars we've made predictions about for 2024. It's mostly good news mixed with a
little bit of caution — you'll understand when you get to the pick for breakout
artist of 2024.

COUNTRY MUSIC IN 2024:

The 2024 Grammys (Feb. 4) is the first country-tinged event of the year, but
several awards shows (CMTs and ACMs) will follow this spring. CMA Fest is a
summer benchmark, while the CMA Awards (November) and second annual People's
Choice Country Awards will hold down the fall.

Musically, we expect new projects from Oliver Anthony, Cody Johnson, Kenny
Chesney, Carly Pearce and maybe Post Malone. In a few weeks we'll have a good
idea of what the summer touring season will look like and be able to asses the
must-see concerts of 2024.

9 BOLD COUNTRY MUSIC PREDICTIONS FOR 2024

Why not predict the CMA Award Entertainer of the Year winner in January?

This group of nine country music predictions for 2024 also forecasts the
newcomer, old-timer and come-backer of the year. Find predictions for Jelly
Roll, Morgan Wallen, Oliver Anthony, Toby Keith (kind of) and more.

Rascal Flatts Will Reunite

Frederick Breedon IV, Getty Images

RASCAL FLATTS WILL REUNITE

Joe Don Rooney is sober and clear-headed. Time has passed since Gary LeVox
called him out, and Jay DeMarcus never seemed to wanna breakup in the first
place. After four years, look for a Rascal Flatts reunion in 2024, even if just
for a song at CMA Fest.

Jelly Roll Will Be Country's Big Grammy Winner

Noam Galai, Getty Images

JELLY ROLL WILL BE COUNTRY'S BIG GRAMMY WINNER

Zac Brown Band was country music's last Best New Artist Grammy winner (in 2009),
and the drought will end in 2024. Jelly Roll is a multi-genre star whom the
industry loves as much as fans. He’ll run away with the award.

Oliver Anthony Will Begin a Very Scotty McCreery-like Career Path

Getty Images

OLIVER ANTHONY WILL BEGIN A VERY SCOTTY MCCREERY-LIKE CAREER PATH

What country music's second-most famous reality show winner and the “Rich Men
North of Richmond” singer have in common is an early career peak that’s nearly
unrepeatable. Like McCreery, Anthony now has to do the work of writing and
recording a debut album that a subset of critics are dying to lambaste. He’s
also going to be on an introductory tour of some sort, although the typical
artist radio tour seems unlikely.

The extent to which Anthony leans into that long, difficult process will decide
how successful he is beyond the fans he attracted with his prickly Americana
anthem. He’s all but guaranteed a living for the next half-decade if he chooses
to remain in Virginia, but should he imagine himself on stages in 20+ years, the
work has just begun.

Morgan Wallen Will Drop a Surprise Album

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

MORGAN WALLEN WILL DROP A SURPRISE ALBUM

Of all our 2024 predictions, this one is a shot in the dark. However, Morgan
Wallen’s next album release will need to differentiate itself from his last two
if he wants to build on the excitement. One way to do that is to Beyonce a
release and drop a batch of songs with no preparation. His hero Eric Church did
that with Mr. Misunderstood in 2015 and would have stolen the news cycle if not
for Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake's performance at the CMA Awards that
very same week.

Morgan Wallen Will Continue to Be Shut Out at Awards Shows

Erika Goldring, Getty Images

MORGAN WALLEN WILL CONTINUE TO BE SHUT OUT AT AWARDS SHOWS

Wallen’s music deserves better, but it looks like some people just won’t vote
for him. One way he could change minds is to reintroduce himself to programmers
and members of the media in a big way in 2024. That comes with risk.

"T" Will Be Made a Member of the Country Music Hall of Fame

Getty Images

"T" WILL BE MADE A MEMBER OF THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME

OK, we’re hedging some, as Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Trisha Yearwood all seem
like smart inductees for 2024.

We Haven't Met the Breakout Artist of 2024 Yet

Getty Images

WE HAVEN'T MET THE BREAKOUT ARTIST OF 2024 YET

Breakout artists seem to come out of nowhere. Bailey Zimmerman surprised in
2022, then Megan Moroney emerged in 2023. The actual New Artist of the Year
winners are likely already signed to a recording contract — the nature of the
nomination process all but prohibits independent artists from inclusion — but
the truly buzzworthy breakout artist could be in their bedroom right now reading
this.

A New Zach Will Emerge

Facebook/ZachTopMusic

A NEW ZACH WILL EMERGE

Zac Brown and Zach Bryan will need to welcome Zach Top to Club Z. We’re hardly
the first to acknowledge this country traditionalist's rich sound — shoutout to
Jake Owen for recognizing it, too — but with several major tours planned and a
surge of interest, he seems likely to be notch a big hit in 2024.

The CMA Entertainer of the Year Will Be …

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

THE CMA ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR WILL BE …

If there’s one truth about modern CMA voting, it's that voters tend to select
the artist or song that makes them feel good. Thus, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton,
Lainey Wilson — all are lovable talents who have the resume and have done the
work to ingratiate themselves with the industry. Jelly Roll and Cody Johnson
also fit that description, but we won’t bet on back-to-back CMA stunners. The
2024 CMA Entertainer of the Year is going to be Luke Combs.

COUNTRY MUSIC'S TOP 23 NEWS STORIES OF 2023

Stunning tragedies fill most — but not all — of the top spots on this list of
country music's biggest stories from 2023. These are the most memorable songs,
deaths, performances and moments from this year.

Gallery Credit: Billy Dukes

No. 23: Chris Stapleton Sings the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVII

NO. 23: CHRIS STAPLETON SINGS THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT SUPER BOWL LVII

Chris Stapleton gave one of the most memorable Super Bowl National Anthem
performances in recent memory when he strapped on an electric guitar and belted
it out on Feb. 12. The two-minute and 20-second performance earned universal
praise for its authenticity.
No. 22: Maren Morris Leaves Country Music, Backtracks

Kevin Winter, Getty Images

NO. 22: MAREN MORRIS LEAVES COUNTRY MUSIC, BACKTRACKS

In September, a headline in the L.A. Times read, "Maren Morris is getting the
hell out of country music." It'd been a quite year for the singer to that point,
but with the release of two new songs, she seemed to be transitioning.

Sonically, the new music isn't all that different, but with that headline around
her interview — and news she was moving Sony's New York office instead of
Nashville — it seemed obvious that she was done making country music.

Or not. Her language softened in the months that followed, before she insisted
that she'll never leave country. She's only separating herself from the toxic
parts of the industry. Yeah, it's confusing, but her next album will tell you
everything you want to know about her musical future.
No. 21: Tanya Tucker Leads Country Music Hall of Fame Class of 2023

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 21: TANYA TUCKER LEADS COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2023

On Oct. 22, Tanya Tucker, Patty Loveless and Bob McDill were welcomed into the
Country Music Hall of Fame during a Medallion Ceremony that featured
performances by Wynonna Judd and Bob Seger. New inductees are typically
announced each May.

No. 20: 'Yellowstone' Prequel '1923' Premieres, Earns Awards Nominations

Paramount+

NO. 20: 'YELLOWSTONE' PREQUEL '1923' PREMIERES, EARNS AWARDS NOMINATIONS

In January, Yellowstone prequel 1923 premiered and it was really, really good.
Fans loved characters played by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, but they truly
fell in love with Spencer and Alex as they romanced around Africa and then tried
to find their way to Montana.

1923 married the danger of 1883 with the objectives of Yellowstone in a way that
tied up many loose ends. Fans and critics love the show. It earned a Golden
Globes nomination in December. Mirren also scored her own nod for her role as
Cara Dutton. Season 2 of 1923 is TBA.
No. 19: Wynonna Judd Tours, Supports Judds Tribute Album

Terry Wyatt, Getty Images

NO. 19: WYNONNA JUDD TOURS, SUPPORTS JUDDS TRIBUTE ALBUM

Wynonna Judd packaged her first two solo albums for the 2023 Back to Wy Tour. It
was her first chance to get back on the road after wrapping up the Judds final
tour in 2022 and 2023.

New solo music from Judd is expected in 2024, but fans whet their appetites with
A Tribute to the Judds. This batch of all-star collaborations is a tribute to
the Hall of Fame duo, but it also introduced many of the 40-year-old songs to
new fans via artists like Jelly Roll. The icon did a full round of media to
support all of it, and throughout she was honest, entertaining and generous.
No. 18: Kid Rock, John Rich Lead Country Artist Boycott of Bud Light

Mike Ehrmann, Getty Images

NO. 18: KID ROCK, JOHN RICH LEAD COUNTRY ARTIST BOYCOTT OF BUD LIGHT

In April, Kid Rock didn't just say "F--k Bud Light and f--k Anheuser-Busch," he
shot several dozen rounds from an AR-15 into cases he'd loaded up on a table
overlooking a lake.

The rock-rapper (and others like John Rich) were upset that Bud Light had
partnered with trans-activist Dylan Mulvaney. His fans followed his lead. The
beer lost its spot on a list of the world's most popular, and suddenly everyone
wanted to know which celeb-owned bars in Nashville would and wouldn't serve up
those blue cans (Garth Brooks said he would continue to).

By late fall, Kid Rock had softened his stance and began to drink Bud Light
again. He said the beer company deserved a spanking, but they got one. He
doesn't believe they should be punished forever.

No. 17: Keith Gattis Dies, George Strait Leads Tribute

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 17: KEITH GATTIS DIES, GEORGE STRAIT LEADS TRIBUTE

In April, songwriter Keith Gattis died in a tractor accident and the Nashville
songwriting community began to mourn. Taste of Country's list of 20 Keith Gattis
songs features deep cuts we loved, even if they never topped the charts.

Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Randy Travis, George Strait and more were
artists who picked up a Gattis song and gave it life. They returned the favor in
November during a tribute show and fundraiser in Nashville. A highlight was
Strait signing "I Got a Car," his 2013 hit.

No. 16: Reba McEntire, Dan + Shay Join 'The Voice'

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

NO. 16: REBA MCENTIRE, DAN + SHAY JOIN 'THE VOICE'

Blake Shelton left the Voice in May 2023, but soon after, his replacement was
named. Reba McEntire has joined the panel for fall 2023 and spring 2024, and
maybe even longer. So far, her steady presence on the show has been delightful,
but she'll soon have good country company.

Dan + Shay will be the first judging tandem next spring. Instead of a spinning
red chair, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney will sit in something that resembles a
sofa as they critique the competition.
No. 15: Morgan Wallen Shaves His Mullet

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 15: MORGAN WALLEN SHAVES HIS MULLET

After nearly a half-decade, Morgan Wallen grew tired of his long hair and shaved
it off. The result was something close to a military cut, although by the time
he hit country red carpets in November 2023, it'd mostly grown back.

This was a bad year for the mullet. Jelly Roll also cut his off in 2023, much to
his wife's pleasure.

No. 14: Lainey Wilson Named CMA Entertainer of the Year

Terry Wyatt, Getty Images

NO. 14: LAINEY WILSON NAMED CMA ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

Lainey Wilson's Entertainer of the Year win at the 2023 CMA Awards was as
unexpected as any in country music history. That's not to say she isn't
deserving — if fact, we laid out a pretty good case why she is. The attention
was on Morgan Wallen, with most people wondering if he'd get his this year.

That still hasn't happened, but Wilson's November night is the big story. She
gave hope to any young singer-songwriter with dreams and a willingness to work
hard. "This is all I've ever wanted to do. It's the only thing I know how to
do," she said of a night as impactful as Chris Stapleton's winning night in
2015.
No. 13: Toby Keith's Cancer Journey

Terry Wyatt, Getty Images

NO. 13: TOBY KEITH'S CANCER JOURNEY

The year began with far more questions than answers about Toby Keith's cancer
diagnosis, but by December, one thing was clear: It won't define him.

The singer told Taste of Country he's chosen to keep living as he battles
cancer, adding that he's feeling good and off chemotherapy, but still receiving
treatment. Pop-up appearances at a few bars and an interview with his hometown
newspaper preceded a moving performance at the 2023 People's Choice Country
Awards. There, he'd bring the audience to tears singing "Don't Let the Old Man
In." It might be the best televised performance of the year.
No. 12: Morgan Wallen Cancels Several Spring Concerts

Jason Davis, Getty Images

NO. 12: MORGAN WALLEN CANCELS SEVERAL SPRING CONCERTS

In April, Morgan Wallen canceled a concert in Mississippi just minutes before
showtime, and his fans were real mad about it. A message on the screen said he
was "unable to sing," but the silence afterward was filled with all kinds of
rumors and conspiracy theories about what might have led to the decision.

He'd go on to postpone several more dates on the One Thing at a Time Tour, but
the trek would still become the top country tour of the year. Finally, in
November, he'd give his first interview in several years, telling Billboard
about the seriousness of his vocal condition.

No. 11: Matthew McConaughey Joins the 'Yellowstone' Franchise

Richard Rodriguez, Getty Images

NO. 11: MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY JOINS THE 'YELLOWSTONE' FRANCHISE

Until Matthew McConaughey says it, we're not going to say it's true, but several
television industry news publications and executives tied to the Yellowstone
franchise say the actor is on board for some kind of Yellowstone sequel.

The nature of the show and McConaughey's character is unknown, but all
indications are that it's set in the present day. It's one of several new
spinoffs planned for 2024 and 2025.
No. 10: Luke Combs Takes Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" to No. 1

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 10: LUKE COMBS TAKES TRACY CHAPMAN'S "FAST CAR" TO NO. 1

Tracy Chapman is a CMA Awards winner today. "Fast Car" made an impact on a very
young Luke Combs, so when he got his chance to cover it as a star, he took the
song to No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. It's one of the Top 5 country
songs of the year and a winner in the Song of the Year category.
No. 9: Kevin Costner's Summer of Drama

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

NO. 9: KEVIN COSTNER'S SUMMER OF DRAMA

After Part A of Season 5 of Yellowstone wrapped, everyone assumed Part B would
follow, and from there Kevin Costner would lead Season 6 and maybe even Season
7.

None of that worked out. Costner and Paramount executives fought about his role
on the show to the point that he's not even expected back to resume filming
Season 5. Furthermore, the show announced that Season 5 (set to resume next
November) will be the end of Taylor Sheridan's television hit.

While that dispute was going on, Costner and his wife Christine Baumgartner
would separate and eventually divorce. The expensive litigation to reach
settlement was fodder for celebrity news sites, but within the testimony fans
learned his side of the story about what went sour in Yellowstone negotiations.
The whole thing only lasted a few months, but dang, it was a roller coaster!

No. 8: Jimmie Allen Accused of Sexual Assault, Rape

Matt Winkelmeyer, Getty Images

NO. 8: JIMMIE ALLEN ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT, RAPE

In May, Jimmie Allen's former manager accused him of sexual assault and rape.
Within a month, another woman would come forward to share her own allegations of
assault. Both Jane Does filed lawsuits, and the singer would later countersue.

Variety was first to report the story, detailing testimony from the first Jane
Doe and corroborating her version with witnesses. He'd deny all charges, but the
fallout would be swift and severe. Nearly everyone with a business relationship
with Allen dropped him, and his wife filed for divorce. They've since
reconciled, by the lawsuits are ongoing.
No. 7: Dolly Parton Drops 'Rockstar,' Her First Rock Album

Ron Jenkins, Getty Images

NO. 7: DOLLY PARTON DROPS 'ROCKSTAR,' HER FIRST ROCK ALBUM

No new music release of 2023 received better promotion than Dolly Parton's
Rockstar. The legend did dozens of interviews and appeared all over television,
but the most memorable moment came during a Thanksgiving Day football game.

At halftime of the Dallas Cowboys game, Parton appeared on stage wearing a
Dallas Cowboys cheerleading uniform as she sang. Of course, it's not surprising
that after this season of Dolly, her new project debuted at No. 1.
No. 6: 'Jelly Roll: Save Me' Documentary Leads to Breakthrough Year

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 6: 'JELLY ROLL: SAVE ME' DOCUMENTARY LEADS TO BREAKTHROUGH YEAR

Jelly Roll's big win at a country awards show was for New Artist of the Year at
the CMAs, but it felt like he'd won Entertainer of the Year. For the second time
in 2023, he gave the kind of acceptance speech you save to show your children
when they're feeling low.

"What's in front of you is so much more important than what's behind you!" he'd
shout to a roaring Nashville crowd.

"Son of a Sinner," "Need a Prayer" and "Save Me" were hit songs in 2023, but it
was his personal story — as detailed in a Hulu documentary called Jelly Roll:
Save Me — that captured America's conversation. His is a rags-to-riches story
equal to that of Dolly Parton.

No. 5: Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" Creates Controversy, Hits No. 1

Terry Wyatt, Getty Images

NO. 5: JASON ALDEAN'S "TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN" CREATES CONTROVERSY, HITS NO. 1

When Jason Aldean released "Try That in a Small Town" as his next radio single,
hardly anyone noticed. But then he released a polarizing music video, and it
became the most controversial song of 2023.

Aldean defended the violent imagery and pushed back when critics said he was
blowing a racist dog whistle with the song. Supporters rushed to him and lifted
the song to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It'd top country airplay charts soon
after.
No. 4: Jimmy Buffett Dies

Rick Diamond, Getty Images

NO. 4: JIMMY BUFFETT DIES

Three of the Top 4 country music news stories of 2023 were shocking deaths,
starting with Jimmy Buffett. The "Margaritaville" singer died in September at
age 76 after battling skin cancer for the last four years.

Few outside of his inner circle knew of his cancer or how serious it'd gotten. A
few canceled shows in 2022 and early 2023 were easily dismissed, even if he
admitted to needing hospitalization. After his passing, emotional tributes
poured in from artists like Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown, the Eagles and Luke Bryan.

At the 2023 CMA Awards, Alan Jackson led a touching tribute to Buffett, a singer
who seemingly weaved between genres as effortlessly as anyone before him.
No. 3: Lisa Marie Presley Dies

Christopher Polk, Getty Images

NO. 3: LISA MARIE PRESLEY DIES

In January, 54-year-old Lisa Marie Presley died after an unsteady appearance at
the Golden Globe Awards to celebrate a movie based on her father Elvis Presley's
life. Paramedics performed CPR on her after being called to her California home.
From there she was rushed to the hospital, but she'd never recover.

"It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my
beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us," Lisa Marie's mother Priscilla said
in sharing the tragic news. "She was the most passionate strong and loving woman
I have ever known."

Many who saw her on TV suspected addiction had once again gripped Presley, but
the autopsy showed no signs of that. After an emotional memorial that included a
song from Axl Rose and poem written by her daughter, medical examiners disclosed
that Presley died of a small bowel obstruction, likely a result of weight loss
surgery.

Lisa Marie Presley was buried near her father at Graceland.

No. 2: Oliver Anthony's "Rich Men North of Richmond" Tops Billboard Hot 100

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

NO. 2: OLIVER ANTHONY'S "RICH MEN NORTH OF RICHMOND" TOPS BILLBOARD HOT 100

Oliver Anthony's song "Rich Men North of Richmond" was the most unlikely hit of
2023, but it did more than launch the career of an unheard-of songwriter from
Virginia. The working class anthem was loved and hated and debated in ways a
country song has not been in decades.

This mystery man — remember when some people believed he was an industry plant?
— went from factory worker living in a trailer to Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper
in a matter of days, but the story didn't end there. It took some time for
Anthony to mobilize a response to his song, but he finally denounced both
political parties and promised to stay true to his hard-working, Bible-loving
fans.

That meant turning down big paychecks from concert venues and record labels and
refusing a media blitz in 2023. A birdshot of concert dates appeared, but
tangible signs of an intentional music career didn't come until late fall, when
he announced a proper tour and that he'd be recording his debut album in 2024.
No. 1: Kellie Pickler's Husband, Songwriter Kyle Jacobs Dies

Rick Diamond, Getty Images

NO. 1: KELLIE PICKLER'S HUSBAND, SONGWRITER KYLE JACOBS DIES

Kellie Pickler's husband Kyle Jacobs died by suicide on Feb. 17. It's news that
still makes country fans flinch.

The hit songwriter starred on a successful CMT reality show with the singer and
even performed for her while she appeared on Dancing With the Stars. At every
turn, they seemed perfectly happy and in love.

Perhaps friends and family knew of his struggles, but the public certainly did
not. Jacobs, 49, and Pickler lived a pretty quiet life that was increasingly
private, as she hadn't made a new record in years and was past her days as a TV
talk show host. An autopsy would confirm his cause of death and reveal that he
had a history of pseudo-seizures and chronic alcohol use. There were no drugs in
his system at the time of his passing.

A list of Kyle Jacobs songs proves his prowess (Garth Brooks' "More Than a
Memory" still stands out), but the response from those who knew and loved him
cut deepest in the days and weeks that followed. As the one-year anniversary of
Jacobs' death approaches, Pickler has said virtually nothing about her tragedy
or her own well-being. She did make one major decision, however: In November,
the house they shared went on the market.
