CAMANO ISLAND'S ONLY PHARMACY TO CLOSE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAMANO ISLAND, Wash. — Mark's Camanno Pharmacy, Camano Island’s only pharmacy,
will be closing its doors for good March 2 at 2 p.m.

Pharmacist Mark Phibbs bought the store 12 year ago and it’s been a labor of
love.

“I love being a pharmacist — it’s part of who I am,” he said.

And his patients love him too.

“Oh, it’s breaks my heart,” said Ginny Legree, 95, who lived on Camano Island
for 40 years but recently moved to Everett.

Legree’s daughter now drives her to Mark’s Camano Pharmacy to get her
prescriptions filled.

“It’s losing a piece of quintessential Camano Island where you can walk-in and
people know you by name,” said Jessica McCready who is the executive director of
the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce. “It’s that piece of small-town charm that
we have here on Camano Island.”

With less than two days of business to go Phibbs was overcome with emotion when
he considered what he loved most about his 35-year career.

“Patients, by far,” said Phibbs. “It’s actually what has made this decision
almost impossible for me.”

The closure seems impossible for the community, too.

“You get tender loving care around here,” said Jim Harbeck, a Camano Island
resident.

It’s the changing healthcare industry forcing the pharmacy to close and so many
other independent pharmacies across the county.

“About six months ago we started getting bad news from insurance companies,”
said Phibbs.

The news included lower reimbursement rates for drugs. According to the
Independent Pharmacy Association some insurers are choosing to cut ties with
small pharmacies all together and that means some customers are faced with
paying full price or choosing another pharmacy where their insurance will help
over costs.

Mark says being a pharmacist has always been his first love and will continue to
be his life’s calling.

“It was always a dream of mine to own my own store and I’ve been lucky enough to
live that dream,” he said. “I’m not quite ready to have to quit, but we’ll keep
paddling and moving on.”

Phibbs will begin work as a part-time pharmacist, starting March 4, at the QFC
pharmacy in Stanwood. He says all the records from his business will be
transferred so patients can still get their prescriptions.
