An Aerial photo of the University of Memphis.

In August, when MBJ spoke to University of Memphis EVP of research and
innovation Jasbir Dhaliwal about the institution eclipsing $50 million in
research awards, he noted that faculty members were submitting proposals that
were “ambitious in nature.”

Noteworthy grants illustrate that the projects are not just ambitious, but
varied. A recent one is congressionally funded — and centered around developing
unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

According to a press release, U of M electrical and computer engineering
professor Eddie Jacobs will lead the "Multi-UAS Multi-Sensor Intelligence,
Surveillance, and Reconnaissance" project, which brings together researchers
from U of M, University of Arizona, and the University of Central Florida.

The grant is valued at $2.7 million, and the hope is to develop UASs for
wide-area intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The group will focus
on experimental research with UASs and multiple sensors to advance technologies
and improve simulation fidelity, which is the level of realism portrayed in a
simulated educational or training experience.

This should help lead to a system that uses multiple UASs, with a variety of
advanced sensors that detect and identify potential threats and items of
interests. The system, sponsored by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, is
expected to be enhanced by on-board AI and machine learning that processes
sensor data into actionable information. It will also have an advanced mobile ad
hoc network system that collects and disseminates data, and an advanced optical
communication system for high-bandwidth data.

The final product is expected to be harnessed in multiple ways, with security,
agricultural, environmental, and military uses all on the table.

As the director of the DRONES research cluster, and a senior researcher for
drones and advanced sensors with the Center for Applied Earth Science and
Engineering Research (CAESER), Jacobs isn’t a stranger to this type of work.

Nor is he the only U of M professor who’s scored a big grant recently.

For example, in October, James McGinnis, an associate professor in the
department of engineering technology, received a $599,997 grant from the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), for his project “DHS/FEMA-CTG 20.”

And Stephanie Ivey, associate dean for research in the Herff College of
Engineering and professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, got a $448,254
grant from the National Science Foundation for her project “Collaborative
Research: The Urban STEM Collaboratory — Building STEM Identity and Student
Success through Academic, Financial, Social, and Career Support.”

Research awards like these bode well for the school’s push to gain R1 status
from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, as the
amount of research expenditures is a key part of gaining R1 status, and more
awards lead to more expenditures.

Because the updated list of R1 institutions will come out this fall, U of M has
already submitted data for consideration, and these grants won’t be considered
for the rankings.

However, once R1 status is gained, an institution must maintain it — the
distinction can be lost — and new lists are released every three years.

Sale of Personal Information

If you opt out, your personal information will continue to be shared if the
transfer does not constitute a sale, such as transfers to our service providers.
You may also continue to see advertising that may include interest-based
information about your visit and information from third parties.

Recipients to whom we sell personal information might subsequently sell that

Please remember that this opt out is brand-, browser-, and device-specific, so
if you visit other ACBJ brands, visit this site from a different browser or
