BUILDING THE BRIDGE BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES: HOW
GOVERNMENTS SELLING ONLINE BENEFITS THE GLOBAL ECONOMY AND CONSTITUENTS

Dec 6, 2023

Across Canada and the United States, online sales are increasingly critical in
liquidating government assets.  Encompassing a wide array of properties,
vehicles, and commercial products, online auctions not only streamline
government processes but also take an important step in building better futures
for surplus disposition powered by the circular economy.

With shifting circumstances continually challenging the transportation industry,
the infinite reach of online auctions has become a key factor in renewing
inventory, giving buyers value for money and sellers better returns for future
funding.

Government assets often have a set life span. Once they reach the scheduled date
of replacement, they are swapped for newer models and the surplus stock is put
up for sale. Over 2,500 government-owned vehicles have been sold on GovDeals in
Canada since Jan 1, 2022, returning more than $29M back to local agencies.
Vehicles include buses and transit vehicles, ambulances, fire and rescue
vehicles, garbage and sweeper trucks, Zambonis, ATVs, SUVs, electric/hybrid
vehicles, trailers, and private and commercial trucks.

The continual requirement for upgraded assets means there is a constant surplus
supply. Digitization of government asset sales stimulates economic growth and
empowers constituents with buying power.

Here, we explore the relationship between sustainability, transportation assets,
and digital government sales.

Sustainability:

Sustainability has become a pressing issue and is often top of mind when
consumers are considering their purchases. Sustainable practices are crucial for
the well-being of our planet and how governments dispose of surplus contributes
directly to these efforts.  Both buying and selling through Govdeals help attain
these goals.

Transparency and Engagement:

Online government asset sales enhance transparency in the sales process,
ensuring that constituents have a clear understanding of how government-owned
assets are being managed and sold. This transparency fosters trust and
accountability between governments and their constituents.

Streamlined Processes:

A digital process streamlines the sale of government properties and assets,
eliminating bureaucratic red tape and reducing the time and cost involved in
transactions. This efficiency not only benefits the private sector but also
boosts government revenue by reducing administrative overhead.

Decrease of Depreciation:

With online auctions, vehicles are listed “as is, where is” – allowing for
simultaneously minimizing depreciation and maximizing the resale value of those
vehicles by selling immediately rather than waiting for a semi-annual or
in-person auction.

Online auctions provide an opportunity to maximize the fast disposition and
acquisition of assets in a sustainable fashion. Together we can build better
futures and share valuable, competitively priced assets.
