EXPANDING THE BOUNDARIES OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS THROUGH REAL-TIME KNOWLEDGE
SHARING

A GLOBAL EFFORT TO SAVE A LIFE

When a nurse in rural Haiti saw numerous pustules on a newborn infant’s scalp
and shoulders, she was concerned that they might signal a potentially
life-threatening infection. With no other medical professionals available to
consult, and no laboratory resources, she turned to Figure 1’s network of
healthcare professionals for real-time consultation and collaboration.

A pediatrician in California saw the case, and was quick to reassure her that
the infant had benign neonatal pustular melanosis, a condition which resolves
spontaneously and requires no treatment. The diagnosis was confirmed by other
pediatricians, as well as dermatologists, and obstetricians and gynecologists.
With the support of the Figure 1 community and collective knowledge base, the
nurse subsequently safely discharged the newborn without any unnecessary and
cost-prohibitive treatments.

IMPROVING PATIENT DIAGNOSIS TOGETHER

A physician assistant shared a case of an 8-month old male who had developed a
whiplash-like rash while at daycare. She was stumped and had no idea what could
have caused the striking eruption. In searching for a diagnosis, and concerned
about possible physical child abuse, she shared the case on Figure 1. The answer
came from a family medicine physician, who recognized the characteristic rash
from a teaching case he had previously seen on Figure 1 of a 50-year-old male
who had developed the same unusual rash after eating undercooked shiitake
mushrooms.

This discourse prompted the physician assistant to investigate the child’s diet
that day. To her amazement, she learned that the daycare had served mushroom
soup containing shiitake mushrooms for lunch. This case illustrates how, for
many healthcare professionals, the real-world medical cases and discussions on
Figure 1 have become powerful learning tools that tangibly impact patient care.

A FINGER ON THE PULSE - COVID UPDATES

In a pandemic, real-time knowledge sharing between healthcare professionals can
make the difference between life and death. During previous emerging public
health threats, such as Zika  and MERS, Figure 1 played a pivotal role in
disseminating real-time clinical knowledge, allowing healthcare professionals to
share cases about how the viruses presented. In early 2020, as Covid-19 swept
the globe, information about the disease was changing daily, and healthcare
professionals once again turned to Figure 1 to learn more about the novel virus.

One hospitalist in the U.S., about to start a 9-day stretch caring for Covid-19
patients, asked the community what questions they had about the disease, and
shared cases of his patients, responding to questions and educating millions of
healthcare professionals around the world in the process. Reading through the
comments is a stark reminder of how far we’ve come in understanding and managing
this disease – but also serves to show just how important these discussions are
in the face of public health threats.
