In the imaginations of many visitors to Tuscany, Cortona has become the
quintessential Tuscan hill town, thanks in large part to the books of Frances
Mayes. There is in fact a kernel of truth in this. Cortona is a town on a hill -
a hillside town rather than a hilltop town - and it is indeed packed with charm
and interest. The location of Cortona makes it a good base from which to explore
southern Tuscany, especially Lake Trasimeno, Montepulciano and the Val d'Orcia,
as well as parts of Umbria including Perugia, Gubbio and Assisi.



Within Cortona, visitors naturally gravitate to the beautiful and interesting
Piazza della Repubblica with its 13th Century town hall and clock tower, and of
course its pleasant piazza ambience, especially on a sunny day. Another major
sight of Cortona is the Duomo, the 15 C Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Cortona is richly endowed with other magnificent churches in a wide range of
architectural styles, all of them worth a brief visit at the very least.

Cortona was a major Etruscan city, one of the Etruscan Dodecapoli, the league of
twelve cities, and traces of their structures can be seen throughout Cortona.
Cortona also has an excellent Etruscan Museum, the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca.
