MISSOURI THE BUCKEYES WILL HAVE PLENTY OF FAMILIAR FACES IN THE FINAL GAME OF 2023. Patrick MurphyDec 12th, 2023, 11:57 AM27 Ohio State won't play in the College Football Playoff for the second straight season but will face Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. While opt-outs have become commonplace for top programs that don't make the Playoff, this will not be the case for the Buckeyes. The Scarlet and Gray held their first player media availability on Tuesday since the loss to Michigan at the end of the regular season. Junior wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock, guard Donovan Jackson, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and defensive end Jack Sawyer announced that while they have not decided on next season, all of the players will play in the Cotton Bowl. Each player referenced the struggles against Michigan over the last three seasons and not winning a Big Ten or national title during their careers, factoring into their decisions and wanting to end the year on a positive note at least. Egbuka played in nine games during the 2023 regular season, missing three contests due to a leg injury that he suffered against Maryland. The receiver caught 35 passes for 452 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball five times for 25 yards. Egbuka was named third-team All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches following the year. In his junior season, Burke played in 10 games, missing the contests against Penn State and Rutgers with an injury. After missing two games a year ago and learning how to play with an injury, Burke had a bounceback 2023 season. The corner often locked down the top opposing wide receiver, recording 19 total tackles, nine passes defended, two tackles for a loss, one interception and one forced fumble. Following the year, Burke was named first-team All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches and second-team All-Big Ten by the media. Hancock came into the 2022 season with hype surrounding his name but suffered an injury in preseason that forced him to miss all but four games on defense. Hancock returned this year, rotating at the nickel position with Sonny Styles and playing the third-most snaps in the secondary. Hancock recorded a career-high 38 total tackles, five passes defended, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown. Jackson was a second-year starter in 2023, starting every game for the Buckeyes and tying for the most snaps played on the offensive side of the ball. Jackson helped block for an offensive line that blocked for a top-40 total and scoring offense. Williams came into the season expecting to be part of the rotation at defensive tackle but admitted that the season went better than he expected. Playing the fourth-most snaps on the defense, Williams registered career highs in total tackles (49), tackles for a loss (10), sacks (3) and passes defended (5). He also had his first fumble recovery, which was recovered for a touchdown. Sawyer moved from the Jack position to a true defensive end this offseason. Playing opposite J.T. Tuimoloau, Sawyer started every game this year and had his best season as a Buckeye. Sawyer managed 44 total tackles, seven tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, two passes defended and two forced fumbles. Ohio State and Missouri will face each other at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday, Dec. 29. Patrick Murphy10 hrs24 Ryan Day had no reason to praise Julian Sayin this week. The Ohio State head coach has often resisted the hype surrounding freshmen, not wanting players to get ahead of themselves early on in their college careers. But Sayin, like classmate Jeremiah Smith, isn't the same as other freshmen. The buzz surrounding the quarterback this spring is real and has been earned. Sayin was a five-star prospect coming out of Carlsbad, California. He was the top-ranked quarterback and No. 6 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports rankings. He initially enrolled at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State, two programs that have produced six top-15 quarterback picks in the NFL Draft since 2019. Having already practiced with the Crimson Tide during the build up to the College Football Playoff semifinal earlier this year, Sayin had experience with how a top-level college program works. Because of this, he had no issue asserting himself when he stepped on the field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center at the start of the Buckeyes' spring practice. Make sure you're in the loop -- take five seconds to sign up for our FREE Buckeyes newsletter now! "He's been unbelievable," Day said of how Sayin has handled himself this spring. "Just really good. I mean, he has a good plan when he gets out there. He doesn't want to get his hand held. I've been impressed with his approach. And like I said before, he's got a really, really bright future." It quickly became apparent that Sayin wasn't just another highly-touted, young quarterback for the Scarlet and Gray. Since Day became a part of Ohio State's program in 2017, the Buckeyes have signed eight quarterbacks who have been top-100 overall prospects in their respective recruiting classes. Only two – Justin Fields (who played his freshman year at Georgia) and Quinn Ewers (who transferred to Texas after one season) – rated higher than Sayin coming out of high school. None of those quarterbacks, nor the ones who came before Day's arrival, had their black stripe removed – a tradition brought to Ohio State by Urban Meyer in 2012 – as quickly as Sayin, who could officially call himself a Buckeye after nine practices. "And the guys know. And a lot of times with the black stripe, it's a lot of times the players. They know. They see it. A guy makes a play or shows up over an extended period of time. But nine practices in, you can see that he was making a lot of throws and in big spots, even against the ones. And so, the play speaks for itself. And again, usually, when you get your black stripe off, it's because you've earned the respect of the team. And I think he's done that." Much of the quarterback conversation this offseason has centered around upperclassmen Will Howard and Devin Brown. Howard started during multiple seasons at Kansas State, including winning a Big 12 title, before transferring to the Scarlet and Gray. Brown is set to enter his third season at Ohio State but has dealt with injuries that have limited his playing time. The expectation heading into spring practice was that one of these two would be the Buckeyes' starting quarterback in 2024. Yet Sayin's arrival in late January, following Nick Saban's retirement, changed the numbers in the quarterback room. According to Day, Sayin is a part of the competition to start despite being a freshman. "He's in the mix. He is," Day said. "Chip really rolls them. It doesn't matter if the ones, twos and threes, so you get an opportunity to see what guys look like. I think sometimes maybe when you're young, you get the three work, and sometimes it can look a mess out there. And so, this has been a really good sample size to figure out where guys are at. But Julian's gonna compete his tail off and he'll continue to do that and he's got a very bright future." Nothing has been decided through 13 spring practices regarding Ohio State's starting quarterback. The competition will continue through Saturday's spring game, which will allow Howard, Brown and Sayin, as well redshirt freshman Lincoln Kienholz and true freshman Air Noland, to compete in front of a large crowd at Ohio Stadium, and likely extend into fall camp. Stay on top of the latest Buckeye news by BECOMING A BUCKNUTS SUBSCRIBER today! Sayin has had a fast start to his college career, positioning himself to be ready to play in his first season. But he must keep doing what made him successful so far and continue his development. "Just overall experience," Day said of what he needs to see from Sayin. "And then just maturity, physically, mentally, emotionally, all those things. But he's shown great signs. I think he's put on maybe 15 pounds since he got here. That's great. But the overall strength and just size. And then that is a matter of just experience. But I like his approach. I mean, I see things in him that lead us to believe he's got a really bright future. And it's very, very encouraging." If he continues down this path, the offseason praise from Day may roll over into the season.
