The holidays are just around the corner, and a beautiful piece of jewelry is a
perfect gift for your special someone (or for yourself). At DFS, we have curated

“Basic jewelry feature more generic designs that are mass produced and widely
available,” says Chan. “Fine jewelry, on the other hand, is created with from
precious metals and gemstones with top-level craftsmanship, so it’s considered
to be of higher quality and value.” It’s also the versatility – and the
intangible benefits – of the investment piece that draws people in. “Fine
jewelry tends to hold value over time, and can even appreciate in value,” says
Chan. “So pieces often become family heirlooms and are passed down through
generations.”

Make It Personal

In deciding on a piece of fine jewelry, Chan suggests not looking at the actual
piece first – but instead, at the person who will be wearing it. “It’s important
that the wearer feels emotionally connected to it; it’s something that they can
create significant memories with,” says Chan. This could mean customizing a
bespoke piece with a that caters to your liking, but aesthetics aside, it's also
key to think about how the piece will be worn, too. “Will it be for daily wear,
or are you creating a statement piece for an occasion?” That will help you
narrow down from vast collections that are available in store.

Then, Chan suggests a few areas to look into before making a purchase.

1. Timeless design
“Look for something with a classic design that transcends trends.”
2. Durability
“Choose precious metals that stand the test of time – platinum, gold or silver,
according to your personal budget and preference.”
3. Authenticity
“Verify the authenticity of the jewelry piece by looking for hallmarks or stamps
that indicate metal purity.”
4. Reputation
“Purchase your piece from established jewelers or brands with an outstanding
reputation.”
5. Ethical sourcing
“Jewelers that adhere to ethical sourcing standards, i.e. conflict-free
diamonds, will contribute to reducing environmental impact.”
