No limits. MOTOR-DRIVEN POWER ASCENDERS FOR MAXIMUM SAFETY, SPEED AND PRECISION. With the company acquisition and full integration of ActSafe, the global market leader for motor-driven winches from Sweden, SKYLOTEC has expanded its product portfolio in the field of ascending and descending of persons and loads. The ActSafe product range offers a wide range of applications, such as on wind turbines, in confined spaces, for building cleaning and for rescue or tactical operations. The available product types have been specially designed according to the requirements of the diverse fields of application and cover the benefits in three working areas: * Personal transport * Rescue * Load transport Because of these multiple uses, job-specific equipment can be replaced and manpower can be saved. The automatic ascending and descending brings with it the reduction of physical stress and injuries when working at height or depth. This reduces the workload on personnel and significantly increases productivity. TO THE PRODUCTS WHAT IS A POWER ASCENDER? A POWER ASCENDER works as a personal elevator that climbs a standard rope. It is a versatile and rugged tool that can be used in places where it is difficult or impossible to use a skylift, crane, scaffolding or a powered platform. The ActSafe POWER ASCENDER allows rapid installation and dismantling, hence there will be minimal disruption time. Repair and maintenance can be done in a manner that is quick, safe and less expensive. When launched back in 1997 the ActSafe POWER ASCENDER meant a revolution for the rope access industry. The traditional manual climbing methods now could be done with a powered climbing aid, allowing quick and cost-efficient access to a work or rescue site. WHAT ADVANTAGES DOES A POWER ASCENDER OFFER? Using ActSafe POWER ASCENDER makes complicated work operations faster, safer and easier for installers and service technicians. Other work area specific equipment can be replaced by a POWER ASCENDER alone. The use of POWER ASCENDERS reduces workload, resulting in savings on labor costs. By reducing physical strain on users due to the motorized climbing aid, the POWER ASCENDER has a positive impact on health and productivity. Easy operation by means of an intuitive throttle handle keeps training requirements low. 3-IN-1 SIMPLE USE RESOURCE-SAVING WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN USING A POWER ASCENDER? Users of ActSafe POWER ASCENDERS must undergo proper training. ActSafe ascenders makes it possible to access heights and depths in a very quick, safe and reliable way. The ascenders are very easy to implement within various work methods and is invaluable in places where access is difficult or impossible by other means. Because of the variety of use in different areas and circumstances training is essential. Working at height or in locations presenting difficult or confined access requires great skill and such standards can only be achieved as a result of extensive training and regular refresher courses. To ensure safety when using the POWER ASCENDER, the correct rope type and rope use play the most important role. A rope suitability test is therefore essential before use. APPLICATIONS RENEWABLE WIND ENERGY Work on turbines is one area where the ActSafe Ascenders have been proven extremely useful. For both inspection and repair operations, the working method offers a short set-up time resulting in minimal shutdown of the turbine. RAW-SOLUTIONS: BLADE ACCESS - INSPECTION & REPAIR The need for the inspection, maintenance and repair of wind turbine blades has recently grown as investment in the renewable wind industry has risen considerably over recent years. This physically demanding work is carried out by rope access teams when the weather permits. ActSafe ascenders help save them time and energy accessing the blades on location. This allows them to complete the work quickly and efficiently, resulting in less downtime for the wind turbines. Photo: RAW Solutions BLADE INSPECTION AND REPAIR Innovative techniques using ActSafe ACX ascenders help reduce the downtime period required for maintenance of turbines. Watch the video here GEARS GMBH: WIND TURBINE MAINTENANCE Location: Near Norderney in the North Sea, a GEARS team faces a stiff breeze and cool temperatures. "In the age of modern technology, our specialists can also be supported by professional equipment. The winches from the Swedish manufacturer ActSafe have been used by us for many years. They facilitate the ascent and descent with rope bag and tools many times over. Despite the extreme weather conditions and the low temperatures, the devices work reliably, as we have seen again with this application. Thanks to the best equipment and training, our team arrives safely back in Steinau after a few days at sea." Photo: GEARS GmbH ASAKEN ROPE ACCESS SOLUTION: OFFSHORE EQUIPMENT LIFTING Asaken Rope Access Solutions use ActSafe ascenders within their daily operations, both for material lifting and for personal lifting. Here the ACX power ascender is used by Asaken as a solution to an unexpected problem. Failure of the primary crane hoist on an offshore platform resulted in some challenges for the team. The ACX power ascender was used as an auxiliary winch for lifting their tools and equipment up to the platform from the transfer vessel. It was positioned in a top rigged setup and operated with the Bluetooth remote control. Having a portable, versatile lifting tool like the ACX ensures the team can complete their tasks and are not dependant on external equipment and maintenance on site. This reduces downtime periods and increases their efficiency. For loads of up to 200kg, the ActSafe ACX is the preferred lifting solution as it is considerably faster than the standard chain hoist. Multiplied over many lifting operations on multiple sites with several teams, this time saving can add up to significant savings throughout the year. PP TECHNIQ: WORK PLATFORMS PP Techniq perform complex wind turbine blade service and repair with safe and comfortable access platforms which are manufactured in Denmark. The down time period of any wind turbine results in a loss of energy generation and a loss of income for the provider. An increase in the efficiency of repair work therefore directly results in the minimal amount of down time, and maximises the amount of energy which can be produced which increases revenue for the provider. ActSafe ascenders are utalised for 4 different work procedures. 1. Steel cables are lifted into position with the help of the ActSafe ascenders to lift them up to the anchor points. 2. Once platform ascends to the desired height, the ActSafe ascenders are anchored to the platform to manoeuvre it horizontally into position on the blade. 3. Technicians use the ActSafe ascenders to leave and return to the platform without interrupting the repair work. This saves considerable time as crew can take relief breaks or change shifts without moving the platform and disturbing the work site. 4. ActSafe ascenders are utilised as rescue devices. Technicians are familiar with them which is of benefit within high pressure emergency situations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- URBAN ACCESS & BUILDING MAINTENANCE ActSafe ascenders can provide scaffold free solutions to urban buildings with minimum impact to the building residents. Maintenance tasks such as repair work, painting and cleaning become more efficient by reducing the time and labour costs Power scenders can be used to gain easy access to high structures, confined spaces, shafts and cranes. INDUSTRIAL ACCESS - GLAZING Small teams of rope access technicians with portable ActSafe equipment can complete glass replacement projects with minimal impact to the buildings tenants and the surrounding neighbourhoods at competitive prices. For these reasons we are now seeing this work method executed on almost every continent. A team of rope access technicians from Industrial Access in London, UK are pictured above using 4 ActSafe ACX ascenders for personal lifting each team member. They accompany the glass panel on the ascent and guide and seal it into its final position 190m above the ground. Glazing operations at these heights are impossible to accomplish with the use of tag lines and would take hours of manual ascent without the use of power ascenders. The ActSafe ascenders reduce the time of ascent to less than 10 minutes. PAINTING & CLEANING Painting, pressure washing and window cleaning of multi-story buildings can be completed quietly by rope access teams with a little impact on day to day life or operations. This can be applied both internally and externally to buildings with challenging access. Traditionally building maintenance work requires the rental of several tonnes of scaffolding equipment. Usually a team of scaffolders take several days to install and decommission the metal framework after the actual maintenance work is completed. This increases the associated costs and has also impacts the daily life of the buildings tenants and neighbours. The use of ActSafe ascenders can increase the efficiency of traditional rope access teams by reducing the operator/climber stress & fatigue, saving operational time and assisting the technicians in the ascent of equipment/materials. Photo: Fabien Champredonde, VTKL, Luxembourg SKY-WORK: FACADE REPLACEMENT The Hotel Comwell in Aarhus City Tower is the 4th tallest building in Denmark. The 2350 glass panels on both the gable ends of the structure were required to be replaced in 2018. Work methods considered were: mobile cranes, scaffolding, suspended platforms, gondola lifts and rope access. With 23 floors and a height of 94m, the black glass façade of the Tower is an impressive landmark in the city of Aarhus. Daily hospitality operations were the clients key concern and it was essential the hotel remained open for business as usual throughout the refurbishment project. SKY-WORK presented an experienced 5 man team consisting of 4 rope access technicians, assisted by a groundman. They worked with 2 ActSafe ACX ascenders which were bottom rigged and operated by multiple remote controls to lift and lower the glass panels one at a time. Their target was to replace an average of 60 panels every day and complete the job in 4 months. Despite challenging weather the team completed the job ahead of schedule with minimal impact to the daily operations of the hotel. Alternative quotations received estimated an 8 months duration for project completion The project was dependant on the reliability of the 2 ActSafe ACX to deliver the façade/glass lifting solution on schedule. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSPECTION OF STRUCTURES ActSafe Power Ascenders are ideal for inspections and lightweight work on buildings, bridges, towers and other high rise structures. Flexibility coupled with rapid installation and dismantling make them a true alternative to scaffolding, sky-lifts and power platforms ROBINA CBUS SUPER STADIUM "The Actsafe winch is a major part of how we work now and even if we aren't using it, it's still kept on site for standby rescue." Mitchell Haskard, MD, Apex Facades. ActSafe ascenders are used to access stadium structures around the world. Annual inspections and maintenance work on lighting, sound systems and scoreboards are some of the work in which they help assist the rope access technicians. ROPE ACCESS INSPECTION PROJECT ON THE ORESUND BRIDGE Rope Access Sweden reported on the first time they worked with the ACC Power Ascenders during their project on the Oresund Bridge whilst working on the bridge pylons and inclined cables. Petter Gellerstam Managing Director for Rope Access Sweden AB said "We completed the required work in half the calculated time, resulting in a substantial cost savings for the client. Once you have worked with the ActSafe power ascender you can't really understand how you managed before. Work is performed much quicker and the ergonomics and working environment are improved beyond belief." Using the ActSafe Power Ascender It is possible for technicians to have more frequent breaks due to the time saved. Not only does this improve the quality of the work life of the technician but it also reduces injuries caused by wear and tear on the technicians body. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to rescue a colleague the ActSafe makes this operation considerably easier - leading to increased efficiency and safety. Rope Access Sweden AB work with ActSafe power ascenders on a daily basis when carrying out operational work on bridges, wind turbines and other such structures. Photo: Fabien Champredonde, VTKL, Luxembourg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TELECOM AND POWER Frequent climbing in towers can lead to repetitive strain injuries among staff. ActSafe Power Ascenders can easily raise or lower a technician including their equipment, thus eliminating a lot of hard climbs. They are also ideal for lifting or hauling purposes, in other words a lightweight alternative to wire winches. HYDRO POWER PIPE INSPECTION A complex and dangerous hydro pressure pipe inspection was performed by Hoehenwerkstatt GmbH in a power station in the Austrian Mountains. The use of sledges, long ropes, ActSafe equipment and local experience were necessary ingredients for success. The inspection of two 300-metre long pipes presented challenges involving extensive planning and creative work methods. With no access or exit point at the bottom, the technicians going into the near vertical pipe system would always have to come back out through the top. This was made even more complicated by the kinks and direction changes in the pipes that have a diameter of as little as 90cm. The IRATA-certified team included personnel with cave rescue experience in case of an emergency situation. With these difficult conditions the team used two sledges that the technicians lay on while inspecting the pipes. The sledges were lowered and pulled with the ropes connected at the top of the system where the power came from two ActSafe ACCII power ascenders with two ActSafe AC Power Supplies in a top-rigged configuration. The operation was a success and the technicians inspected the whole pressure pipe system without any problems or safety issues over a period of six days. This included the set-up, the testing of the system, the briefing of the qualified inspectors and finally the actual inspection itself. The use of ActSafe power ascenders made the operation both faster, safer and easier for the technicians. Without this equipment they would have needed to climb out every day using traditional ascending methods, which would take considerably more time and physical effort in the cramped, hot and humid environment. SOLAR ENERGY The Colibri Group specialise in height work and difficult access. Here their rope access technicians are pictured using the ActSafe ACX ascenders to install solar panels on the exterior of a building in central Paris, France. Power ascenders are compact lifting tools which can be incorporated into mobile rope access teams to do the physical heavy work which is time consuming and exhausting. This maximises the productivity of the team by reducing their fatigue day after day. With an ascent rate of 24m per minute and a Working Load Limit of 200kg the ActSafe ACX is ideal for lifting and manoeuvring solar panels, facade panels or building and construction materials. On sites with an accessible power source, the ACX can be connected to mains electricity with the ActSafe Power Supply unit. The ACX can then be rigged in a fixed position through a deviated rope system and lift continuously, all day long. Batteries can be kept as a redundant back up solution if the on site power was to fail. SPIDERTECH: TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA Spidertech in Australia were contracted to provide safe access down the inside of the penstocks feeding each of the turbines at Tarraleah Power Station. They have over 20 years of experience in Hydro Power infrastructure and: "have been using ActSafe hoists for many years. We think they redefine how rope access is undertaken for many of our jobs - a real game changer." With a descent of approximately 600 metres, a number of technical difficulties were overcome. The job required a lot of rope; over 2400 metres of rope was needed. Ensuring adequate isolations, maintaining remote rescue retrieval options and continuous communications with the work party was all part of the specially designed work method. In combination with their specialist access trolley, ActSafe powered rope hoists and a skilled team of operatives, Spidertech were able to deliver the service on time and under budget. •Internal Inspection of 1200 metres of Penstock •600 metres of continuous descent in a confined space •Limited window within shut down to complete works -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEARCH AND RESCUE SAR personnel and firemen were among the first to adopt the use of Power Ascenders. Speed and efficiency are essential to them and they immediately saw the potential for saving lives through improved working methods. HELICOPTER WINCHING Coast Guard and Search and Rescue Organisations rely on the primary winch in the helicopter for many recovery and rescue operations. The compact lightweight design of the ActSafe ascender allows for it to be kept as a back up/auxillary winch for emergency recovery to be used when the primary winch fails. Until this application was considered, the only option for the rescue team was to leave and request another helicopter. This extends the risk to the human lives involved, and increases the costs of the rescue operation considerably. Several ActSafe distributors have successfully worked with local organisations in Scandinavia, Central Europe, Africa & South America to develop this procedure. HIGH RESCUE GROUP - FROLUNDA Part of the HRG (Höjdräddningsgrupp / High Rescue Group) on Frölunda Fire Station & Emergency Services, Räddningstjänsten Storgöteborg, Sweden. The ActSafe ACX is a familiar piece of equipment used by the High Rescue Group. Regular training exercises in different field scenarios ensure they are ready to react to every emergency. MOUNTAIN RESCUE Multi-national European Rescue Personnel train together to combine knowledge and increase efficiency in Buoux, France Used in conjunction with the ActSafe Rigging Frame, the ACX or PMX ascender can provide a lightweight portable lifting solution which can be easily carried and utilized by a small search and rescue team. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEOTECHNICAL The ActSafe PME Power Ascenders is widely used in all kind of geotechnical operations; Cleaning rock faces over railways and roads, mounting of safety nets and inspections. In remote areas the need for helicopter assistance may be unnecessary - with enormous cost savings as the result. ROCK SCALING IN NORWAY Rock Scaling is the removal of loose rock on the high slopes and cliffs situated above roads and railways, to reduce the risk of debris falling onto people below. The PMX and PME ascenders are preferred for this work as the remote locations usually have limited electricity available. "The best days at work are the days on the rope, with air under your feet. The ActSafe makes the day much easier - it is a wonderful aid." - Anders Flæte - Mesta, Norway. (Instagram account andersflete) Expert rope access teams have been using ActSafe ascenders for over 10 years to access areas where regular cranes cannot reach. They also use a variety of customised tools which present further challenges in getting them up to the work locations. These include pressurised air cushions and drilling equipment. The steep slopes are also stabilized by rock bolting, pinning or the installation of wire mesh. The ActSafe ascenders are used to winch this material up and into position. Each petrol ascender can haul up to 250kg, and a full tank of petrol allows a 100kg load to be lifted 750m vertically. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RESTRICTED AND CONFINED SPACE Underground mines, ventilation systems, storage tanks and silos also require access for daily work, inspection, cleaning and maintenance. Access is generally only possible from the top down which presents difficult working environments and requires innovative work methods. Rescue plans almost always involve egressing a casualty out from the top. Power ascenders provide the solution to all theses challenges. INDUSTRIAL RESCUE Casualty recovery times can be decreased significantly with the use of an ActSafe ascender and a properly trained rescue team. The estimated recovery time from this 65m shaft is less than 8 minutes, once the equipment is rigged and set up in position. "Over the last few years we have been working with the South West Water Access and Rescue team to improve their small team rope rescue capability. One of the ways this has been achieved is by using powered ascenders such as the Actsafe. The Acstafe allows us to undertake complex and often deep shaft industrial standby rescue with a compact team, utilising the winch to eliminate the need for a haul team, reducing team numbers and fatigue on longer raises. The fine speed control of the Actsafe, especially when used on a 2:1 MA, with the added benefit of a remote control make this device very well suited to small team industrial recue.." - Alan Sunshine, Rope Geeks ) Photo: courtesy of Rope Geeks, UK. (www.ropegeeks.com) VENTILATION SYSTEMS An installation of ductwork into a ventilation shaft at NMBU University in Ås Norway by the facility service rope access company HØYDEN AS . "The Actsafe was used both for lowering the duct modules, and for getting back out of the shaft after the modules where in place. Nice to have when it's too cramped to climb efficiently." - Kristoffer Eriksen. For access to tighter confined spaces, it is possible to rig the ActSafe winch to the anchor point and use in a top rigged set up lo lower and recover people or objects through very narrow spaces. Photo: HØYDEN AS, Oslo, Norway -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARBORICULTURE Arborists and Tree Surgeons have embraced the use of Power Ascenders. This industry is known for pioneering new working methods and customising equipment. TRÄDNU ARBORISTS Trädnu, Västsvenska Trädspecialisten AB proudly show off some of the tools of their trade. "Good job today with among other things pine tree crops and pine takedowns! Happy and grateful for amazing cooperation with Actsafe Systems!" - Michael Austad Suitable for lifting and lowering people, tools and material loads of up to 200kg, the ActSafe ACX is a versatile tool for any arborist. When lifting people, we always recommended the use of a 2 rope system. Photo: Michael Austad, Bollebygd, Sweden -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHIPPING ActSafe ascenders are often used for work on ships as the technicians almost always have to exit back up to the top due to the water below. Work can be carried out when the ship is in port without the need for a dry dock. MARITIME ACCESS ActSafe ascenders can be used for gaining access to areas of the ship above the water, lifting non-IRATA people in and out confined spaces and also to lift tools and equipment to a certain altitude.
