EAST 17

BIOGRAPHY

East 17 is a legendary British pop-rock, dance-pop, hip-hop and rap music band.
In the mid-1990s, this group was one of the most popular boy bands in the UK -
the musicians sold over 18 million copies of their discs worldwide, and the
group's songs dominated the national music charts for over decade.

«EAST 17» - BIOGRAPHY OF THE BAND
The band has started its history in 1991, when 20-year-old Englishman Tony
Mortimer, an ambitious singer and poet, turned to the recording studio London
Records. The label has recommended to assemble a team and to create so called
‘’boys band’’ - this is how the band "East 17" was created, which featured good
friends of Mortimer - John Handy, Terry Caldwell and Brian Harvey.
The band was named after the postal code of their hometown, Walthamstow. Music
and lyrics were written mainly by Mortimer, while Brian Harvey, who has
remarkable vocal abilities, soon came to the fore, retraining from a dancer and
backing vocalist to a soloist and frontman.

1992-1997: POPULARITY
The band did not have to wait long for the desired fame and success – East17
quickly acquired crowds of fans who were admired by their "political, sharp and
stylish" music. In a couple of years, the "bad boys with tattoos" were able to
bypass even the then undisputed leaders of the pop scene, even Take That band,
led by Robbie Williams.
Singles from the debut album "Walthamstow" (named again after the friends'
hometown) sounded from every radio, and the song "It's Alright" became a No. 1
hit not only in Britain, but throughout Europe and Australia. The secret of the
popularity of young Britons lay not only in their daring image, but also in the
lyrics of their songs - they contained political overtones and revealed the
hottest topics: war, peace, equality, love, etc.
The next two records "Steam" and "Up All Night", released in 1994 and 1995
respectively, were no less successful. During this period of time, the musicians
toured a lot.

1997-2010: A NEW PAGE IN CREATIVITY
In 1997, due to irreconcilable differences, the quartet left Tony Mortimer.
Renamed to "E-17", the team continued to work and released the album
"Resurrection" - without the participation of the creator of the team, the songs
turned out to be of a completely different nature.
After years of controversy and creative friction, in 2010 Mortimer returned to
E-17, moving brawler Harvey. The musicians recorded their fifth disc "Dark
Light", which marked the transition of the musicians to the rock genre. However,
Mortimer did not stay in the team for a long time - in 2013 he left the group.

2014 - PRESENT
Today, East 17 consists of John Handy, Terry Caldwell and Robbie Craig, who
joined the band in 2014. East 17 is often invited to corporate parties,
festivals and events: the musicians perform both their main hits, which cause
real bouts of nostalgia for many, and fresh tracks that deserve no less
attention.

HE HEARD SOMETHING THAT HE KNEW TO BE MUSIC

Throughout the years of the band’s existence 6 albums have been released: first
3 being the most popular.

1992 – Walthamstow
This album was a strong number 1 in the UK Albums Chart, it became Platinum in
Great Britain and won a prestigious Mercury Prize. Top hits – “House of Love”,
“Deep” и “It’s Alright”.

1994 – Steam
This album became Platinum in the UK twice. The boy band were nominated for the

remixed multiple times and became very popular in Israel.

1995 – Up All Night
Unlike the previous albums, this one contains songs written by all the band
members, not just Tony Mortimer. The album became Platinum in the UK and was a
strong number 1 in the Russian Best Albums rating, “Thunder” being its most
popular song.

1998 – Resurrection
The forth studio album was produced without Tony Mortimer, it also became the
last one for Brian Harvey. The songs are softer and have R&B vibes, in
comparison to the dance hits from the previous years.

2012 – Dark Light
The albums consists of 10 songs, most of which can be considered rock. Recorded
with Blair Dreelan, who was the vocalist at the time, the album was initially
called «Recharged». Blair Dreelan stayed in the band for less than a year and
after his departure some of the songs we re-recorded and removed.

2017 – 24/7
This album symbolises the band’s return to pop music. The musicians have
recorded several dance tracks and also included some of the most popular hits.
