Calling Africa At the end of last year European Gospel Radio started three daily hours on high power Shortwave (150 kW) beamed to Africa, specifically to the most troubled areas of Sudan and Darfur. These broadcasts, however, can be heard all over the African continent. With a south directional beam from Europe, our signal reaches extremely well the whole African continent, from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia on the Mediterranean, East, Central and West Africa all the way down to South Africa, and the greatest part of Southern and Central Europe as well. The program is produced directly in Sudan, aired locally on a few FM stations in larger towns, and then transferred live by satellite to our station. From Europe we then beam it on Shortwave so that people in the remote areas of Africa can pick up the signal on Shortwave radios. So far. after six months of regular broadcasts, the results have been great, and we all feel blessed of being able to provide some relief to these troubled regions. Read more... Forshia Ross: the youngest Ham Radio Operator in Alaska who became Pastor At the age of ten, Forshia Ross became the youngest ham radio Operator in the state of Alaska, where her family lived at the time. Forshia remembers when she took the Morse code and radio theory exam to get her license; She was very perplexed by one question. She was sure the multiple-choice answers did not contain the right one from which she could choose. Finally, Forsha went to her instructor during the exam and shared it with him. She was apparently right, and a letter of correction to the Federal Communications Commission accompanied her exam. As the local newspaper reported, “The young Miss passed her test in radio theory and the international Morse code with flying colors.” Forshia even built her own transmitter, a task that took one whole summer. Her father built the receiver; and when they tested them both, Forshia's worked fine, and his began to smoke. They had a good laugh about it, but Forshia was still very proud of herself. Foshia also remembers going to a ham radio summer party, given for the benefit of all radio operators in Alaska, and asking if she could sign the roster that had been placed high up on a podium. The man she was asking looked down at her, smiled sweetly, and answered: “Honey, that’s for radio operators to sign.” Innocently, she looked up at him (everyone was taller than her, of course) and said, “But I am one.” Through this medium of communication, she would reach as far as Guam and many other places. Forshia still has her logbook. She received fan mail from all over the world and was featured in the CQ Magazine, one of the most well known magazines for radio operators. When the Lord opened up ministry to Forshia Ross in 1990, never would she have believed that radio would continue to be so important. Only this time the purpose would be to share the Good News of Jesus Christ around the world. Forshia's radio program, Hidden Treasures has been aired on several stations in the United States, short wave in Africa and Northern and Southern America and in her own local area. God has given Forshia a unique ability to share the Gospel in practical ways that help people realize that He desires to be everyday real in their lives. She is often interviewed as a guest speaker on syndicated radio stations. Her audio CD, 18 Sound Bites, a collection of some of her best programs, continues to encourage people with God’s love and personal care. It has been her great pleasure to be invited to share the Good News with the European Gospel Radio ministry as well. Forshia Ross is a licensed and ordained pastor and head of the international ministry Treasurers from the Heart, which started in 1990 on the outskirts of Washington DC. She fulfills the call of ministry to help people through television, radio, books, Bible studies, speaking engagements and her website, TreasuresFromTheHeart.org. Forshia has won two Rhode Island PEG Awards for Best Religious/Spirituality TV Program and has also published two books, No Secondhand Rose and The Wilderness Shall Blossom like the Rose, the first and second of a trilogy about her journey to wholeness. She lives with her husband, Eric, in Glendale, Rhode Island. New high power broadasts to Middle East, Asia and Pacific We've just recently started broadcasting using 150 and 300 kW to Middle East, Asia and the Pacific. We are quite excited, because with just one single broadcast we cover an extremely large area of the world, including East Africa (i.e. Somalia, Ethiopia), Middle East (Arabian peninsula, Iran, Iraq), Asia (Afghanistan, India, China, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, etc.) and our signal is also heard strong as far away as Japan, until the far end of the beam in Australia and New Zealand. There are many US and British soldiers in these areas that we can reach also, if we could only alert them all to tune in (maybe through their relatives in the USA and UK). There is about +3 to +10 hrs time difference from 13 UTC in all these regions and we reach these targets in the late afternoon (in Mid East) to the evening prime time in the more distant countries in Asia and the Pacific, and no later than midnight local time in Australia & NZ. In the meantime, listeners' reports have been received from India, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, China, Australia and the USA. Since propagation works strangely at night, our listeners and monitoring stations report that we do indeed reach well also the areas in central and NE China and Japan that are not on our primary beam. AM Medium wave broadcasts Since the beginning of 2011, we have been broadcasting on a new European AM/Medium Wave frequency of 1368 kHz, covering the North East of Italy (Venice, Padua, Verona, Vicenza, Bologna and vicinities, population around 3 million) from 7 PM until 2 AM Central European Time every night, and from 6AM until 8AM every day. New frequencies in parallel with 1368 kHz were added at the beginning of 2015: 846 kHz, 567 kHz and - most recently - 918 kHz. The latter is currently our regular frequency every evening from 7PM-11 PM Central European Time, to cover local areas only in the North Eastern part of Italy and over the border of neighbour countries. The addition of 918 kHz has been proved very effective in reaching DXers in Northern Europe, as far as Sweden and Norway during darkness European Gospel Radio and IRRS broadcast daily. English is our primary language, although short segments in German, French and Italian are also aired occasionally. All programs are also carried via audio streaming on the main IRRS/EGR stream (see more details on top of our home page) All broadcasts can also be heard in the border countries of Slovenia. Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany and eastern part of France after 7 PM until 7:30 AM (nighttime) approx Central European Time. Listeners' letters on 1368 kHz have been received also from Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. The total potential coverage is approximately 143 million people, of whom ca. 68 million speak English as a first or second language. The article features European Gospel Radio and NEXUS-IBA story going back from the late 1970's when we started relaying programs in English on FM radio in Milan, Italy, and then expanded our broadcasts on the Internet, AM/Medium Wave and via shortwave to cover the entire world. The article also mentions briefly our own CDN technology called WorldDirector, developed internally at NEXUS-IBA to distribute our Christian radio and TV programs over the Internet, via our web farms in North America, Europe and Asia.
