FEEDING A RISING POPULATION

The global population is expanding, placing strain on our already fragile food
systems and the environment. In order to overcome future challenges, it is vital
that we explore innovative solutions. One such solution, often overlooked, lies
in unlocking the potential of marine resources to tackle food and
climate-related issues. Unfortunately, governments currently prioritize
land-based solutions, neglecting the significant contribution that seafood can
make.

Despite covering over 70% of our planet, the ocean’s potential as a food source
has been overshadowed. This oversight has resulted in the UN’s Food and
Agriculture Organization’s report on food security and nutrition highlighting
the health risks associated with diets lacking essential nutrients, leading to
premature deaths. The overconsumption of red meat, in particular, contributes to
preventable illnesses like heart disease, a leading global cause of death.

INNOVATIVE AQUATIC SOLUTIONS

To tackle these challenges, leading scientists and the UN are increasingly
advocating for aquatic foods to play a central role in food policies. The Blue
Food Assessment, a comprehensive study conducted by over 100 professionals from
25 universities, emphasizes the underutilization of aquatic foods, despite their
high nutritional value.

For instance, wild fisheries are projected to produce 96 million tonnes of catch
by 2030. However, experts estimate that an additional 16 million tonnes could be
sustainably harvested without overfishing our oceans. This increased catch could
provide essential nutrients and vitamins to millions of people, potentially
reducing iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, which are significant global public
health issues.

Moreover, improving sustainable access to seafood could address the deficiencies
of essential Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) in 38 million people. These fatty
acids, primarily found in seafood, offer numerous health benefits. Increasing
seafood availability alone is not enough; ensuring access for undernourished
populations is crucial. However, having millions of additional tonnes of seafood
available would be a promising starting point.

SEAFOODS CLIMATE CHANGE ADVANTAGE

In addition, wild seafood holds a climate change advantage over many other
foods. It requires no land or freshwater and generates fewer pollutants.
Furthermore, the carbon emissions from seafood production are significantly
lower compared to red meat production.

To unlock the benefits of wild seafood, governments must prioritize ocean
management. Currently, one-third of global fish stocks are overexploited, making
it essential for policymakers to place ocean management at the core of their
food strategies. They should establish supportive regulations that recognize,
consult, and provide assistance to fishers engaged in sustainable practices. It
is crucial to build upon the progress already made and ensure that there is no
regression.

Achieving this goal is not only possible but also supported by the public.
Robust fisheries management, with the support of governments, businesses, and
fishers, can drive progress. Recent research demonstrates that fish stocks
targeted by sustainable fishers are healthier and more resilient than those
subject to unsustainable practices. Furthermore, consumer research across 23
markets shows an increasing demand for sustainably produced seafood, reflecting
growing concern for the future of our oceans.

Effective change to improve global health and livelihoods is within our reach.
However, policymakers must recognize the value of protecting our vast marine
resources for future generations. By prioritizing sustainable practices, we can
harness the potential of nutrient-rich seafood to feed millions of people
without compromising the health of our oceans.
