5 Valve World February 2024 www.valve-world.net CONTENTS 33 Editor’s choice
Pioneering helium valves elevate airship A CIRCOR subsidiary has been selected
to partner up with FLYING WHALES to develop and produce valves essential for the
helium management of the LCA60T airship. 34 Control valves Control valves with
IO-link increase plant availability RHODIUS Mineralquellen consistently invests
in IO-link- capable devices. A state-of-the-art tunnel pasteuriser has now been
retrofitted with control valves from Schubert & Salzer Control Systems with
IO-link-capable positioners. 36 Gaskets Determination of gasket characteristics
at cryogenic temperature Cryogenic temperatures significantly influence the
characteristics of the sealing materials. EN 13555 includes tests for tightness,
creep relaxation, Q smax and E-Modulus of gasket materials excluding tests at
cryogenic conditions. 40 Power generation The value of intelligent actuation for
offshore wind power As demand for electricity increases, there is a greater need
to scale up renewable energy generation. The International Energy Agency (IEA)
estimates that renewable energy will contribute 70% of the global energy mix by
2050 under a net zero scenario. 42 Chemical industry Stainless steel valves in
the chemical industry Valves are essential to many industries and are used under
all sorts of circumstances. While their application usually determines the
optimal materials for the specific valve, stainless steel offers properties that
can be very beneficial. 46 Column Global coordination meets critical delivery
requirement Max-Seal, an American valve manufacturer, was challenged with
supplying a crucial valve for Monterrey’s “El Cuchillo” Dam. Faced with a tight
eight-week timeframe, Max-Seal showcased precise coordination and high- quality
performance in enhancing the city’s water infrastructure. 48 Chemical industry

functions are, their basic design and operation, and the different ways in which
they are used in various applications. 18 Valve design The DSCV-SA valve: a
modern solution to steam conditioning Mark Wheat, Celeros Flow Technology,
outlines how technical innovation and leading-edge valve design has improved the
conditioning of superheated steam used in power generation and other essential
industries. 21 Emission control Initiative to transform emission management
Score Group and asset55 announce a collaboration focused on the enhancement of

temperatures drop here in the Northern Hemisphere and the days feel shorter than
ever, there is a sense that winter is finally closing in. Ice skaters are
enjoying the freezing temperatures, making the most of the opportunity to flex
their muscles while the ice allows it. There is also a sense of new beginnings;
the days are slowly getting longer, and we’ve welcomed in a new year. This will
undoubtedly be another busy year for valve and actuator manufacturers,
distributors, suppliers and users worldwide. I hope 2024 is a healthy, happy and
prosperous year for all of our flow control community, wherever you may be
around the globe. Sadly, we have said a final farewell to a prominent member of
our community, control valve expert Jon Monsen, who passed away after a long
illness on December 1. Jon was passionate about his work, with a brilliant mind
and a real talent for explaining complex issues in an understandable way. He
worked hard to complete his series of columns for Valve World, which he saw as
his last opportunity to share his knowledge and help the global valve community.
Writing his columns was a welcome distraction in the last year of his life, and
as agreed with him, we will continue to publish these until the series is
complete. Jon’s arranged for his website www.Control-Valve-Application-Tools.com
to remain active for another six months, so I encourage you to visit the site
and download the various free valve tools he made available there. This month we
welcome back BAC Valves to the magazine cover. Based in Catalonia, Spain, the
company designs, manufactures and sells high-quality ball and butterfly valves
for the chemical, petrochemical, gas and processing industries. It has built up
a strong client base in these demanding applications around the globe, and you
can read more from page 8. Valve World welcomes a new regular columnist this
year; Bob Donnelly will write in every second issue about hot topics and
projects affecting our industry. This month, he showcases a large water project,
and how precise coordination and high-quality valve performance is enhancing a
city’s water infrastructure. You can read Bob’s first column on page 46. If
you’d like to be more involved with Valve World in 2024 by submitting an
article, case study, or news to share with the global community, drop me an
email and learn about the possibilities. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine,
and as always, your feedback is welcome. Best wishes, EDITOR’S PAGE Joanne
