Ann Hsu (left) lost the race to keep her seat on the San Francisco Unified
School District, while fellow appointees Lainie Motamedi and Lisa Weissman-Ward
were elected to the school board.

A newcomer and progressive beat out a more moderate mayoral appointee to take
the third and last seat on the San Francisco school board, an outcome that
leaves the district with politically divided leadership.

Parents and community members expressed hope the new board will work well
together to put three years of controversy and conflict behind it.
