The thesis subject was the development of the liver and pancreas of the frog
embryo, and Holtfreter commented that this subject was not of great interest to
Spemann or himself.ĭuring this time, he shared a laboratory bench with Hilde
Mangold (nee Pröscholdt), who was in the process of discovering the amphibian
gastrula organizer, a discovery later acknowledged in the award of the 1935
Nobel Prize to Spemann. Nevertheless, Holtfreter began studying embryology and
in 1924 received a doctoral degree in natural sciences based on thesis research
completed in Spemann's laboratory. His replacement was Hans Spemann, whose work
as the preeminent embryologist of the time was unknown to Holtfreter. However,
the professor died shortly before Holtfreter arrived. He pursued natural science
at the Universities of Rostock and Leipzig from 1917 to 1919 and then
transferred to the University of Freiburg, attracted by the hiking and skiing in
the area and by the possibility of working with a renowned naturalist on the
faculty (Professor Doflein).

Yet he felt confirmed in his inclination as an incipient field biologist.

The signals from the organizer mostly evoke or release this development, rather
than provide detailed instructions for it. For embryologists, his research
shifted their view from the developing embryo as a supracellular organismal
entity to the embryo as a complex population of interacting cells in which the
numerous cells surrounding the organizer have a high competence for development,
held in a latent state. He initiated and contributed substantially to many lines
of experimentation that are still ongoing in the analysis of the embryonic
organizer and of embryonic induction. His research was done entirely with

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is closely linked to cognitive decline and
alterations in brain structure and function. Further research is required to
confirm results in the long term using a larger and more diverse sample.
Stepping exergames may be useful for assessing the cognitive and motor status of
older adults, potentially allowing assessments to be more frequent, affordable,
and enjoyable. The preliminary visual analysis revealed that the group with
cognitive impairment required more time to advance to the next difficulty level,
also presenting slower reaction times and stepping speeds when compared to the
healthy control group. Stepping and gameplay metrics had moderate-to-strong
correlations with cognitive and mobility performance indicators: faster, longer,
and higher steps were associated with better mobility scores better cognitive
games’ scores and reaction times, and longer and faster steps were associated
with better cognitive performance. The differences between the two groups were
visually inspected, considering their within-game progression over the training
period.

Based on MoCA scores, patients were then stratified into two groups: cognitively
impaired and healthy controls.

Parameters measured on the first gameplay were correlated against standard
cognitive and mobility assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment
(MoCA), gait speed, and the Short Physical Performance Battery. Stepping
parameters included length, height, speed, and duration, measured by inertial
sensors placed on the shoes while interacting with the exergames. Game
parameters included games’ scores and reaction times. Stepping and gameplay
metrics were recorded in a longitudinal study involving 13 older adults with
mobility limitations. In this study, we investigated the potential of stepping
and gameplay metrics to assess the motor-cognitive status of older adults.
Stepping exergames designed to stimulate physical and cognitive skills can
provide important information concerning individuals’ performance. The MoCA has
proved to be an appropriate measure for cognitive screening taking into account
different cognitive domains, which will enable clinicians and researchers to use
this test and its six latent dimensions to achieve a better understanding of the
individuals' cognitive profile. The present findings corroborate the
six-dimensional structure of the MoCA and provide good evidence of the construct
related validity. This study contributes to overcome an important gap in the
construct related validity of this instrument. An overall psychometric adequacy
of the items, and a good reliability were also found. The results allowed us to
establish the factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity of this
six-dimensional structure. Although all tested models showed a good fit, the
six-factor model based on the conceptual model proposed by the MoCA's authors
showed a significantly better fit. In a Portuguese sample of 830 participants,
several models were tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The present study
aims to assess the construct related validity of the MoCA through the
establishment of the factorial, convergent, and discriminant related validities,
and the reliability of data. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief
instrument developed for the screening of milder forms of cognitive impairment.

Everything is painted in the most radiant shades of blue, yellow, and green, and
it’s impossible not to stop and take it all in from time to time. Resisting the
urge to explore off the beaten path can be a herculean task sometimes, due to
how beautiful your surroundings are. Draugen is a very contained experience, and
you should treat it as such. There’s almost nothing to see off the main path,
and I spent a lot of time slowly scouring every location in hopes of uncovering
additional clues or hidden secrets, to no avail.īut if you stick to the linear
path the game sets for you, you’ll continuously come across new areas to explore
and items that will spark a new conversation with Lissie. But even if you go
exploring in the areas that are already open to you, you won’t find anything of
interest. However, the game is very linear, and if you try to go somewhere it
still doesn’t want to you, you’ll find a lot of locked doors and gates. The
environment in Draugen is very inviting, and you’d want to explore it as soon as
you can. However, you are free to go almost anywhere you want from the very
beginning, though you might not want to.

You always know where you need to go, and if you don’t, Lissie will make sure
you do. Of course, you don’t wander about aimlessly. When you’re not talking
with Lissie, you are wandering around the fishermen village, stopping only to
read notes and draw in your notebook. Her dialogue is expertly written and
acted, which makes her the best part of Draugen by far. She’s a great character
that evolves in an interesting way throughout the game, and still has something
new to say. Luckily, talking with Lissie is always enjoyable. It would have been
better to let the player do the detective work, but the game is more interested
in Edward and Alice’s relationship than it is with allowing you to solve a
mystery. Lissie is also the one doing most of the mental work, connecting
fragments of information you already discovered together. Everything you can
interact with prompt a conversation between Edward and Alice, about the village,
the people who used to live there, or Edward’s sister. While sometimes she will
literally point you towards an important location or item, most of Lissie’s
guidance is done through dialogue. She’s free-spirited, curious and brave –
qualities Edward is scared to show, which means a lot of the times she’s the one
pushing and guiding the player forward. Lissie isn’t your typical AI companion:
She feels and often acts as a separate entity from the player, exploring on her
own, shouting when she spots something cool and generally being her own person.

While the story is lacking in substance, it is full to the brim with dialogue,
specifically with Lisse, your companion. The story ends up feeling like a teaser
for a much larger narrative we’ll probably never get to experience. Instead, the
game continues to hint something unsettling is going on right around the corner,
just to end with a feeble twist and doesn’t pay off in any significant way. It’s
still good, with the right amount of tension and discovery, but I was expecting
more elements of psychological and existential horror. Unfortunately, Draugen
doesn’t do anything interesting with its story. At some point, you start
doubting whether the stuff happening on screen is really happening, or is it all
in Edward’s head. It’s not that he’s a liar, just that he isn’t all there. You
see, Edward is what you’d call an “unreliable narrator,” meaning his version of
the truth isn’t, well, all that reliable. It’s a cool side story that helps
drive the game along, but the main story is all about Edward himself. The game
doesn’t hand you anything on a silver platter, but if you make sure to interact
with everything you can, you’ll figure out what’s going on or as much of it as
the game lets on.īut the mystery of the disappearing Norwegian fishermen isn’t
why we’re here. I say “leisurely stroll” because Draugen doesn’t require any
effort on your part to uncover clues or put them together into a coherent
narrative. What unfolds is not so much of an investigation, as it is a leisurely
stroll in the most picturesque location the world, peppered with moments of
dread and suspense, with a hint of something supernatural going on behind the
scenes. When they reach the shore, they discover the place to be completely
abandoned and set out to find out what has happened, and how Edward’s sister
ties into all of it.

The game starts with Edward, accompanied by a young woman named Alice (Lissie
for short), rowing a fishing boat down a fjord towards a quaint village right on
the water.

In Draugen, you play as Edward Charles Harden, an American traveling to Norway
in search of his sister Elizabeth.
