OUR LITTLE OLD TOWN

The City of Covington, founded in 1813, is a charming Southern community nestled
among three rivers. An eclectic mix of boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops
and restaurants line the downtown streets. Special care has been taken to ensure
the conservation of Covington’s historic homes and buildings while also allowing
for the modernization of its infrastructure.

Our History



FROM WOODS TO WHARTON TO COVINGTON

See how Covington evolved to become the thriving town it is today.

Motorcar crossing Bogue Falaya River at Pitcher Beach (upriver form Railroad and
Boston Street bridges). At first diesel, then electric. Ceased in 1911.
Following the turn of the 20th century, J.L. "Deed" Smith with one of the first
cars in Covington. His sister, Annie, is at the far right. H.J. Smith's Son had
franchises for Brush, Flanders and Jackson Autos.
Train makes turn on Gibson Street. Circa 1916.
Formerly Covington Grammar School, C.J. Schoen Middle School, this structure is
the oldest school in use (as school board offices) in the parish. School on site
as early as 1909.
Looking north up Columbia Street to intersection of Boston Street. Pre-fire
photo circa 1906.
1899 - The Bank of Covington which became the Covington Bank and Trust Company.
A tremendous boost for economic development in the entire parish.
Alexis Family pictured in front of their store. Guido Cintino Alexius purchased
the building (formally a gym) in 1915.
Sunday Baptism on the Bogue Falaya River.
Private toll bridge at Sulphur Springs (upriver from Boston Street). Its shape
is evidence of being washed out repeatedly by logs. Circa 1907-1911.
