Next month, the White House will hold its second-ever conference focused on
combatting hunger and improving nutrition in the U.S. — more than 50 years after
the initial one was held.



On Thursday, two of New Jersey’s top lawmakers — U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and state
Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin — examined how it has affected their own state.



“It is shameful that in the state of New Jersey, in every single county,
thousands of New Jerseyans to to bed food insecure,” Booker, D-N.J., said during
a listening session at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. “This is a shame. We
should do something about it.”




A report from the Food Research & Action Center found 1 in 12 New Jersey
households suffered from food insecurity from 2018-20 and that chronic health
problems stemming from that costs the state $1.3 billion each year.




In 2019, there were 762,530 New Jersey residents — including 192,580 children —
considered “food insecure,” according to state and federal data. They are
defined as people who reported in federal surveys that they worry their food
supply will run out, they cannot afford a balanced meal, or skipped meals for an
entire day because they did not have enough money to buy food.




Meanwhile, the number of people under the age of 20 living with Type-II diabetes
in the U.S. grew by 95% from 2001-17, according to the federal Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. The greatest increases were among Black and
Hispanic youth.

The first White House hunger and nutrition conference was held in 1969 and
helped lead to critical policy changes related to food.




Booker, a member of the Senate’s agriculture and nutrition committee, helped
secure funding for the upcoming second conference. He said Coughlin, D-Middlesex
— who has lobbied for a number of laws in recent years to combat hunger and food
insecurity in New Jersey — suggested they hold a listening session to “help
inform what goes on in Washington.”




Coughlin called food insecurity a “real challenge” because it affects people
every day.




“If we can’t make sure the least among us have those things that make a
meaningful life — a place to live, clean water, food — then we don’t have the
right to call us a great state,” the Assembly speaker said.




Booker said he saw the far-reaching affects of food insecurity when he moved to
Newark decades ago.




“What I saw immediately was so many of the issues in my city could be traced to
our food systems and the food desert they live in,” said the senator, who was
Newark’s mayor before being elected to Congress. “Most people don’t think of it
that way, but food is at the intersection of every aspect of our well-being as
human. It is at the center of social justice. It is at the center of economic
justice. It’s at the center of our children thriving.”




Booker noted it’s not just that people don’t have money for food but access to
quality food. He pointed out how people can walk into a bodega in Camden and get
a Twinkie cheaper than an apple because the federal government subsidized
everything in that Twinkie but not the apple. He cited how only 2% of federal
agricultural subsidies go to the food nutritionists say we should eat.




Coughlin suggested officials need to help citizens have better access to food
benefits, saying it’s “a maze to get some of these social programs.” A few of
the bills he sponsored this year make it easier for residents to take advantage
of benefits under the federal the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program — also known as food stamps.




State Agriculture Secretary Douglas Fisher said part of fixing the issue is to
help support farming, a key producer of food. He noted that farmers are
currently facing “unprecedented challenges,” such as the higher cost of goods,
supply chain disruptions, and poor weather.




“Food security is the bedrock of any nation’s prosperity and stability,” Fisher
said.
