ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Scot McKnight is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle,
Illinois. He is the author of more than eighty books, including the
award-winning The Jesus Creed as well as The King Jesus Gospel, A Fellowship of
Differents, One.Life, The Blue Parakeet, and Kingdom Conspiracy. He maintains an
active blog at www.christianitytoday.com/scot-mcknight. He and his wife,
Kristen, live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, where they enjoy long walks,
gardening, and cooking.
Cody Matchett is the Scholar in Residence at First Assembly Church in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada. Cody holds a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies (Briercrest
College) and a Master of Arts in New Testament (Northern Seminary). He lives in
Calgary with his wife Brianna who is a counselling-therapist and his daughter
Aleitheia Theodora.

Scot McKnight is a gifted writer, and here he applies his gifts to a book of the
Bible that has been misunderstood perhaps more than any other.
There are really two aspects interwoven through the book.
The first is a debunking of the fanciful readings that sadly dominate much of
American evangelicalism, as in the "Left Behind" novels. Many times throughout,
the authors show has this sort of speculative reading of Revelation is both a
misreading of the text and has historically had a 0% accuracy.
The second is a presentation of what Revelation is actually saying -- a call for
the original readers in the early church to be "dissident disciples", continuing
to follow Jesus in the face of temptation to follow the ways of Rome (often
symbolized as "Babylon"). Of great importance is the connection the authors call
to recognize the Babylons in the present, and where they might be tempting us
today. In this era where Christian Nationalism has captivated much of the
American church, this message is greatly needed.
The authors call on scholarship but it is not an academic work. It would be a
great resource for pastors (though it certainly isn't a scholarly commentary)
and for informed laypeople looking to better understand the still-relevant
message of this book of the Bible.
Another good book along similar lines is Michael Gorman's "Reading Revelation
Responsibly", which I would also give 5 stars, but I think I like this one even
more.

would have heard it. I don't care where you stand on eschatology, if you are a
responsible person, you need to read this book. Even if you disagree, it will
help you think more clearly about what it means to follow Jesus in our day.

This neither the illogical and inaccurate theology displayed in the likes of the
Left Behind series, not regulated the book of Revelation to being “just about
the first century.” Revelation scares some Christians, confuses others, and
becomes an obsession for still others. This book helps the curious reader to
dive through the complexities and confusions to find a book that defines our
ecclesiology and missiology in ways that impact the faith of Christians in any
and every age.

textbook). McKnight does start politicing his liberal views seeing the US in a
stereotypical generalization. He colors everyone with the same bush when
describing racism. Although, there is many characteristics that point to the US
and every country as Babylon. I would still give five stars except for the
binding for his analysis of Revelation.

Amidst of a flurry of apocalyptic books which attempts to frighten or alarm
people in difficult times in history, this book is very good, easy to read. It
clarifies apocalyptic thinking on how to be a faithful Christian disciple from
the Book of Revelation, when sudden changes, and disasters in time seem
recurring. It is a useful and helpful lens to view tragic occurrences in modern
times which also points to hope and new life.

It is a good exposition when he sticks to Revelation - his "Playbill" analysis
is creative and helpful and his debunking of the fanciful Dispensational
interpretations is very helpful.
The book is weak because it is only an attack on Dispensationalism without
substantively presenting other eschatological alternatives.
However, the the real problem with the book is that it is not about Revelation!
It is a biased, distorted and one sided attack on "Christian nationalism" aka
political, economic and cultural conservativism wrapped by a commentary on
Revelation.
It is the most shameless "Bait and switch" I have ever seen. It - "sells"
Revelation and blatantly "delivers" progressive propaganda.
Certainly there is much to dislike about the far right and the dangers of
conflating conservativism with Christianity, but his silence and seemingly
embracement of all the profound and destructive progressive ideologies is both
unbecoming and shameless, especially for a scholar.

So much to read, and so little time. Well...this book Scot McKnight does a super
job of demystifying Revelation for the average reader. It's really more
applicable to Christians and is not too difficult a read at all. The main point
I got out of it is that as apocalyptic literature, it cannot be read literally.
Rather, it should be approached with one's imagination firmly in place. It is
also important to note that its purpose was to encourage Christians in John's
time (the writer) that God would have the last word. Scot aims to educate us to
the fact that 'Babylon' is not in the past only, but in the present and we must
be vigilant to recognize its traps in order to stay faithful to the Gospel of
Jesus.
Scot also includes an important section on Christianity in America today. All in
all, a worthwhile and important read.

Die Offenbarung des Johannes ist für viele Leser ein Buch mit 7 Siegeln. Das
liegt vor allem daran, dass das letzte Buch der Bibel als literarische Gattung
der apokalyptischen Literatur verkannt wird. Daher betrachten viele das Buch als
eine Art Fahrplan für die Zukunft.
Dr. Scot McKnight gelingt es hervorragend den Plot dieser apokalyptischen Vision
herauszuarbeiten. Er erkennt die starken Symboliken und Bilder, aber beschneidet
damit nicht die immense Aktualität der Botschaft dieses oft verkannten
Schreibens für die heutige Zeit. Er lädt seine Leser zu einer "dissidenten
Jesusnachfolge" ein und damit zu einem Glauben, der eine Gegenkultur zum
vorherrschenden Zeitgeist ist. Allerdings hat diese christlich-sibversive Kultur
nichts mit dem American Way of Life des Evangelikalismus zu tun, den sich einige
amerikanische Kirchen auf die Politfahnen geschrieben haben.
Die Offenbarung lädt uns in die Nachfolge des Lammes ein, das ohne Gewalt und
fremdes Blutvergießen (sein eigenes ist ja bereits vergossen worden!) die alte
Weltordnung des Drachen überwinden und einen neuen Himmel und eine neue Erde
schaffen wird. Auch für Leser geeignet, die keine theologische Vorbildung haben,
da viele klassischen theol. Schulen und Auslegungen zur Offenbarung sehr gut und
einfach verständlich erklärt werden. Einfach ein hervorragendes Buch.

A postmodern - post truth description of the book of Revelation
The views stated here are entirely personal. As a full professor of the liberal
arts (secular non-American Uni) for many years I have been interested in new
Christian-based understandings of the book of Revelation. Unfortunately, this
book has a fundamental flaw at its heart. Based on the philosophy of social
science the authors obviously take a post modern – post truth view of
Revelation. The authors do so covertly by not stating this position upfront as
one would expect from a scholarly work. However, all the post-modern post truth
terminology is here – the Revelation content is referred to as ‘imagination,
‘science fiction’, ‘myth’ etc. It is disingenuous of the authors not to
acknowledge their philosophical approach. As to the reason for this omission one
can only speculate. Significantly the tenets of this philosophical position are
that ‘truth’ does not exist as facts but rather is rather a social construction
based on a multitude of factors. For example, its adherents treat the bible as
moralising tale built of Jewish historical myth. Personally, my position is
clear (unlike the authors), I believe the bible is the inspired word of God.
Once you move from this position you are in the realm of secularist approaches
to the bible – where myth and personal imagination prevail – as is the case in
this book. In supporting the concept of the book of Revelation being a work of
science fiction, with a vague moralising take, the authors even relegate the
Lamb to that of being a moralising figure, just another martyr and omit the
vicarious work of the Lamb. The postmodern approach treats all literature as
lacking factual truth and open to revisionism and deconstruction – presumably
the authors take this approach to the rest of the holy scriptures? Although this
is by no means clear.
Another problem with the scholarly aspect of the work, in addition to the
philosophical omission, is that of lack of scholarly critique. This is
surprising given the authors lofty claims of new knowledge. Rather, alternative
views are dismissed as ‘flat footers’, ‘not reading well’ (dyslexia?), ‘well
meaning’ (patronising). Nowhere does the authors move beyond this infantile mud
throwing and involve the tools of synthesis and critique. This failure is
reflected in the lack of progressive structure in the book – it is full of
circulatory arguments and repetition i.e., it suffers from the authors taking
several bites at the cherry so to speak. For example, the term ‘dissident’ is
introduced with great pomp and fanfare as a replacement for the bible-based noun
‘Christian’. Unfortunately, the dissident term is not defined – it comes across
as opposing something buts fails to state what a Christian stands for – rather
convenient as bible truth is a casualty of this postmodern polemic.
Another issue is that the book is rooted and grounded in the USA without
understanding other cultures, with occasional misleading one liners (e.g. the
misunderstanding of the German Jewish and Judaism question in relation to
Bonhoeffer in 1930’s Europe).
If this work was submitted to me to referee for a learned journal submission, I
would have to reject it based on the author’s failure to clearly state their
post-modern post truth philosophy. It raises yet more serious questions – do the
author’s employers e.g., Norther Seminary (under whose banner at least one of
the authors claim allegiance) agree with this bible philosophy? Has the USA
seminary system moved to a post truth approach to the bible? Finally, would one
pay thousands of dollars to enrol in such places. Maybe spiritual learning needs
to move back towards a church environment? Big questions! But sadly, few answers
from this book.

Revelations had encouraged Christians for centuries. But in recent history it's
original message has been confused and unhelpful.
McKnight and Matchett help clarify the message to worship Jesus, the sacrificed
lamb. They remind us that this seemingly complicated book focuses on Jesus. Very
comforting.
