We think it’s essential for synthetic biologists to think beyond their lab work, anticipating the impacts of their projects, assessing biosafety and biosecurity risks, dealing with dual use, building skills in stakeholder engagement, and otherwise embodying a culture of responsibility. This culture is cultivated by iGEM’s Responsibility Program which involves a range of efforts in risk management, education, field-building, research, and leadership. We’re here to help! GUIDANCE FOR IGEM TEAMS How will you practice responsible synthetic biology? Check out guidance from our team to help you understand issues like project design, risk groups, and human subjects research. Responsible Design White List Risk Groups Surveys and Interviews Informed Consent Working Safely HUMAN PRACTICES Every team needs to think deeply and creatively about whether their project is responsible and good for the world. Human Practices is not any specific activity or set of activities. While the most successful iGEM teams will engage with Human Practices issues throughout their project lifecycle, this engagement can take many shapes, reflecting the diverse contexts and intentions of iGEM projects. What? /human-practices/what-is-human-practices Why? /human-practices/why-do-human-practices How? /human-practices/how-to-human-practices SAFETY & SECURITY We believe that identifying and managing risks from this technology is everyone's responsibility. As part of that responsibility, teams are expected to use Safety Forms to provide iGEM HQ with regular updates about how they are addressing biosafety and biosecurity in their projects. PROJECT SAFETY FORM Every iGEM team must submit a Project Safety Form by the relevant deadlines. Teams cannot qualify for medals and awards until their safety form has been approved. CHECK-IN FORM Get permission before working with any organism, part, or activity that is not on the White List. You may submit Check In Forms at any time until the jamboree. ANIMAL USE FORM Get permission before working with animals or samples from animals (the policy covers vertebrates, like rats or fish, and some invertebrates, like octopus and bees) Safety Policies provide further clarification on the use of specific technologies in the iGEM Competition.
