The bio is now a permanent feature of our website. It is accessible by clicking on the icon at left. History and Background: Bhawani Anantaraman Foundation (BAF) was established by Dr. Anantaraman in memory of his wife, Bhawani, and his two daughters, Aruna and Rupa, who died in the Air India bombing in June, 1985. After spending several years supporting various Non Governmental Organizations (NGO's) with donation and volunteer efforts, Dr Anantaraman decided to set up a foundation whose aims are to promote education among children, particularly the disadvantaged. Thus BAF was born in August 1995. BAF is a Canadian registered charity organization managed by a Board of Directors. There are no salaried employees in the Foundation. In 1996, the Foundation began financing and actively participating in the implementation and operation of suitable programs. BAF has a strong commitment to foster musical talent in young performers. The Foundation has established several music scholarships and bursaries in the strings category (violin, viola, and cello). The first major project undertaken by BAF was a life skills program for youth, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Kerala, India. BHAWANI MEMORIAL SCHOOL (BMS) opened in 1999 in Yercaud, Tamil Nadu, India, to provide quality education to all children regardless of their financial status. For the first two years, the school was conducted in a rented house, but soon it became clear that the community needed a school that offered a high level of education at affordable cost. In 2001, the school moved into its present location. Our activities are focused on our motto "Progress through creative education".
