Two- and three-wheelers represented the majority of avoided oil use, clocking in at 997,230 barrels per day; for comparison, electric passenger cars only avoided the use of 264,382 barrels per day and electric buses saved 207,482 each day, according to a new report from BloombergNEF. Meanwhile, electric vans and trucks saved just 26,614 barrels per day. Part of that is due to sales numbers; about 49% of EV sales were two- and three-wheelers, bringing its total fleet to more than 292.4 million EVs across the world. Passenger vehicles, which made up just 14% of EV sales, have the second-largest fleet—26.5 million. Electric buses made up 38% of sales, but have the smallest fleet at nearly 666,480 vehicles. But while that is certainly a lot of oil saved, there hasn't been much improvement since 2021, according to the report. While 1.5 million barrels of oil per day is a huge leap compared to the 725,900 barrels saved in 2015, it's roughly the same as what was reported in 2021 and just a slight improvement to the 1.3 million barrels saved per day in 2020, according to Protocol. Furthermore, the daily demand for oil per day is expected to reach 105.7 million barrels by 2028, according to the International Energy Agency. In other words, the current amount of oil saved per day is about 1% of the total expected daily demand in less than five years. Some of that demand could be offset by the expected growth of EV sales; 30% of the global passenger vehicle market will be comprised of electric vehicles and more than 100 million passenger EVs will be on the road, up from 14% of the global market and 27 million passenger vehicles on the road in 2022. Electric vehicles are also predicted to reach 75% of global passenger vehicle sales by 2040, but sales will slow in major markets such as China and the U.S. in the late 2030s, according to the report. Two-wheelers and municipal buses are almost on track, and require a small amount of police intervention, while light commercial vehicles and passengers vehicles require moderate government intervention. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles, namely trucks, on the other hand, are not at all on track to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
