EDITORIAL REVIEWS

FROM THE AUTHOR

Greetings. My name is Aaron Christensen, aka Dr. AC.

"I Like Horror Movies."

If you've ever uttered the above four words (which you undoubtedly have,
otherwise you wouldn't be reading this) to another person, then you are well
acquainted with "the look" that follows. The look comes in three varieties:

Look #1: Shock, dismay, confusion, usually accompanied by the word, "Why?"

Look #2: Mild interest. "Really? What's your favorite one?"

Look #3: Euphoria, followed by "Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, one of us, one of
us..."

Herein, you will find nothing but #3's, right down the line. Welcome home,
fellow fiend.

FROM THE BACK COVER

The A-List of Horror Films and Monster Movies

320 pages * with 122 photos from * 110 films covered in * 101 essays by * 78
horror fans from * 12 different countries

Bringing a refreshingly egalitarian approach to the subject, Horror 101 collects
musings on our favorite chillers not by the expected assortment of critics and
filmmakers, but the audience... the fans themselves. Young and old, male and
female, located all over the globe. From Alien through The Wicker Man, each
entry brings a breath of fresh air to the consideration of seminal movies many
of us thought had been analyzed to death. As editor Aaron Christensen puts it,
"Keep America strong! Watch more monster movies!-- Joe Dante, director, The
Howling, Piranha, Gremlins

These are not just fanboys that like their gore and monsters; rather they are
passionate folks who give great insight to all things horror and the macabre.

--Tiffany Shepis, scream queen, Tromeo & Juliet, The Hazing, Nightmare Man

I LOVE this book!!

-- Elaine Lamkin, bloody-disgusting.com

...a book of enthusiasm. It reminds us why we love horror movies...

-- Michael W. Mayo, author, VideoHound's Horror Show

Horror 101 is the primer every sci-fi and horror student needs for a compelling
and intellectual glimpse into the classroom of genre movies. After digesting
this, you will never again get an "F" -- unless it stands for "Film-lover."

-- John Stanley, author, Creature Features and I Was a TV Horror Host

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Aaron Christensen originally hails from the small farm town of Mead, Colorado.
Years of talking to the cows in relative seclusion drove him to pursue a career
in Theatre Arts, if only to have a more appreciative audience. He has been
working as a professional actor in and around Chicago since 1991.

In addition to all that ackty-schmackty stuff, Aaron (aka "Dr. AC") is one of
the Midwest's rising authorities on horror films/monster movies, having seen
over 1,500 creature features (and counting). He is also a founding member of
Chicago's only horror-centric theatre company, WildClaw Theatre.

(From the Introduction)

One day it struck me that the most challenging thing about being a fledgling
horror aficionado in this age of instant access was simply not knowing where to
start. Which horror flicks and monster movies were the "essentials?" Every
October, a multitude of divergent "scariest movies" lists are circulated,
usually offering more grief than comfort to fans. Occasionally, we are lucky
enough to find a "horror mentor," but knowledgeable as they might be, they are
probably going to steer us toward their own personal passions. What was needed
was a good jumping off place to discover each new subgenre (after all, not all
Italian cannibal films are created equal), as well as an overall look at the
genre as a whole.

While my original impulse was to compile a list and write about the essential
films myself, a thought suddenly struck me: What if I were to invite individual
horror fans to write on each of the films that I had designated as "must-see?"
Wouldn't it be far more interesting to read myriad opinions on 100+ different
films than to listen to just one person (i.e., me) drone on and on? This way, we
would also have a terrific cross-section of viewpoints; young and old, male and
female, as well as an international contingent. The more I thought about it, the
more I liked the idea, and things quickly went from concept to action. I invited
numerous friends and fans from my various walks of life to participate in the
undertaking. The guidelines, in order to preserve the multifaceted dynamic, were
simple: Within a prescribed word limit, celebrate and illuminate the films in
question, utilizing personal reactions as well as any background information you
find worth including. Anything goes. Serving as a producer-editor, I recruited
and assembled the talent roster, assigned the essays, proofread and suggested
revisions, etc. While there were a few bumps in the road and more than a few
deadlines missed, I'm happy to report that the experience itself was
overwhelmingly a positive one.

You now hold the fruits of our labors in your hands. And such sweet, forbidden
fruits they are...

Herein, you will find 101 essays on 110 vital cinematic offerings within our
beloved genre. In several cases, where it seemed impossible to talk about one
film without mentioning another (as in the case of the 1958 and 1986 versions of
The Fly, or The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II), we have simply created a longer
essay that examines, compares and contrasts them. Not only did this make good
sense thematically, it also allowed us to squeeze in a few more titles. Pretty
sneaky, eh?

With this book, we hope to accomplish a number of things: First, to get a list
of essentials out there in the world, hopefully inspiring today's younger horror
fans to partake of the pleasures to be found within some "older" films. Second,
to create an opportunity for the voice of the everyday horror enthusiast to be
heard, allowing them to celebrate his/her favorite fright flick. After all, it
has never been the "serious" critics who have helped these films stand the test
of time, it has been the tireless masses who have slavishly devoted themselves
to the cause. This is for the fans, by the fans.

Also, it seemed like someone needed to step up and put a word in for the
monsters out there, particularly of the "giant" variety. Too often these days,
the creature features that thrilled and delighted many of us "old-timers" as
children are being pushed out of the room and sent down the hall to the "sci-fi"
or "fantasy" departments. (I can't tell you the grief I took from my horror
buddies for including The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, but darn it, the Cyclops will
always have a champion in me.) So, if that means we needed to add the words "and
Monster Movies" onto the title, then so be it. Because really, if monsters don't
have a place in the horror realm, then there's something wrong with this
picture.

But the main reason behind putting this project together was that we hoped to
create a tool that will help breed a more well-rounded horrorphile, creating a
common ground for all of us to stand upon. Horror fans take enough crap from the
"outside" world; we could do with a more united front. For instance, if a
slasher fan and a classic Universal fan meet on the street, and the one has seen
a couple moldy oldies and the other has seen a few gorefests, then voila! A
conversation is possible, a bond is formed, a fellow "outcast from society" has
been recognized. It is my firm belief that horror films and monster movies have
the ability to bring more divergent people together than perhaps any other force
on earth. And no, I'm not kidding.

To wit, what sets this volume apart from others of its type is its many-voiced
format. The participants range in age from 16 to 74. They are male and female.
They hail from all over the U.S., England, Belgium, Scotland, Australia, Spain,
Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico, and elsewhere. They are actors, clerks,
students, librarians, office temps, retired grandparents, graphic designers,
warehouse managers... Between these pages is proof positive that horror fans
come in all shapes and sizes; we're not all the pierced goth kids in black
t-shirts that the civilians seem to envision (although we do have a few of those
as well).

Finally, we offer this as a sampler platter from the massive buffet that is the
genre; a introductory class, if you will, at "Horror U." It's for the casual fan
who is looking to get into the pool as well as the experienced viewer who has
seen all the films listed and just wants to hang out with some like-minded
folks...

5.0 out of 5 stars The classics of horror film (and why they are classics)
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2009
Verified Purchase
Beyond just reading and watching horror stories, I also like to read about
horror. Most books about horror films fit into two general categories: books
about the nature of horror and catalogs of various movies, usually with a brief
review. Horror 101 fits somewhere in the middle: while it is a book listing over
a hundred horror movies, each movie comes with an essay that is more than a mere
review.

One of the nice things about Horror 101 is that the selection of movies includes
almost every significant horror movie. The key Universal Monster movies are all
here: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, The Mummy and the
Creature from the Black Lagoon, as are the key Hammer films, Val Lewton films
and a bunch of other ones. The few I feel are missing are all easily debatable,
such as The Old Dark House, The Last Man on Earth, Young Frankenstein and
Carnival of Souls. And by editorial choice, no movie released in 2000 or later
are discussed.

While some of the essays are straight reviews, others take a more historical or
sociological perspective. Since it is a set of essays by different writers
(editor Aaron Christensen has only written three of the 101 essays (The Cabinet
of Dr. Caligari, Cat People and The Phantom of the Opera), the quality will
vary, but most are quite good. In addition, compared to similar books (like The
Rough Guide to Horror Movies), I didn't really notice any incorrect plot
descriptions.

Of the movies referred to in this book, I've seen 70-80% of them, which leaves
me with a bunch of choices for new movies to pick up. Of course, there can be
spoilers (as Christensen warns), so approach the movies you haven't seen with
caution. But if you are a fan of horror, this is a really good book to read:
it'll give you new ideas of what to watch and offer a fresh look at ones you've
already seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror 101 Review

If you collect Horror Film refrence books, you are not deciding if you are going
to get this book. You are deciding when are you are going to get this book. You
should get it now. It is the only one out there that is written by the fans.
"Hey (you're thinking)I'm a fan". That's right. It is written by the people
whose opinion you actually care about. Don't you get sick and tired of all the
people that don't get you telling you to check out some lame movie that you
wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole? Don't you remember how excited you get when
you meet fellow Horror Film fans? You could talk forever about horror, right?
This book is like being at a party filled with all of your favorite people to
talk to. Even if you have seen the films discussed in this book, it is always
fun to find out why other fans love the same stuff that you do. Buy this book
now. It has a zombie professor on the cover!

One of the most comprehensive overviews on the subject, this book is a "must
read" for any horror movie fan of any age. Whether one is a casual viewer or an
avid collector, this book has the kind of text that sparks both memory and
admiration for this much analyzed genre. Full of trivia and overview, it makes
for a fun read no matter what your reason for delving into the cinema of the
strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2009

This is a great book for both new and old horror fans. The reviews were written
by fans of the genre and gives you not only a smalll summary of the movie, but
some intresting facts on the film as well. WARNING: there are spoilers in this
book, if you have not seen some of these movies and don't want to know the
ending, than be carefull of wich ones you read. The authors give personal
opinions in each review and you may not always agree with their take on the
paticular movie, there were a few I did not completly agree with, but all in all
a good reference for horror fans. Im deff. gonna check out some movies I read
about in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, unique horror list book
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2017

I thought overall, this was an excellent book, especially as an introduction and
reference for those just getting into horror movies. Most of these movies have
been reviewed before. However, the difference with the review essays being from
different fans really lends a nice unique touch. Just like any "top list" book,
there will be arguments about what should and should not belong on the list, so
that can just be overlooked, especially when you are introduced to horror movies
that you didn't know about, or thought much less of than someone else may have.
If you haven't seen many of these movies, than pick up this book and use it as a
reference. I will be using it more as a reminder of why I like horror, and these
movies in particular.
