The following individuals were arrested and charged in 2021 and several years earlier. Some were convicted and sentenced to prison. Others have accepted plea deals for probation and some cases were still pending. Gallery Credit: Erin Vogt John Denuto (SJR Wrestling, @SJRWrestling via Twitter) JOHN DENUTO The former New Jersey middle school teacher was initially charged in 2020 with sexual assault of a teenager, possession of child pornography, photographing a child in a sex act and child endangerment. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's office and Sayreville police said in April that further investigation uncovered possession of more "child sexual exploitative material" and that Denuto had photographed seven other victims without their knowledge and inappropriately touched five of them. In April 2023, Denuto agreed to a plea deal, stemming from multiple criminal charges. He was expected to face a seven-year prison term when sentenced on Sept. 8. Matthew Rennie (NJDOC) MATTHEW RENNIE The teacher and coach was arrested in fall 2021. Matthew Rennie, of Ringoes, had worked at a private school in Franklin Township, when he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old female, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said. In May 2022, Rennie pleaded guilty to sexual assault and child endangerment. In March 2023, he was sentenced to four years in prison. The school was identified in a January 2023 lawsuit as Rutgers Prep. Francisco Realpe (Hudson County Prosecutor's Office) FRANCISCO REALPE The public school teacher, who lives in Hoboken, was arrested in February 2020 and accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student in Jersey City in fall 2019. Realpe had been a gym teacher at Dickinson High School since 2005. Weeks later, he was charged with second-degree sexual assault, stemming from an incident in 2004 while Realpe was a teacher at what was then Union Hill High School in Union City, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced. In July 2021, Realpe pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault. In January 2023, he was sentenced to four years in prison, Ricardo Valle (Harris County Sheriff's Office) RICARDO VALLE The former music teacher in Ocean City was arrested in February 2021 on charges of molesting a student five years earlier, whom prosecutors said he forced to perform a sex act on him. Valle was arrested in Texas, on charges involving a 17-year-old female student at Ocean City High School. He resigned from his position months later. In July 2022 under a plea deal, Valle was sentenced to five years in state prison for a single count of endangering the welfare of a child. Samantha Krakower (Bergen County Prosecutor's Office) SAMANTHA KRAKOWER The Leonia High School gym teacher and coach was charged in April with molesting a student. Bergen County prosecutors said school officials discovered that the then-24-year-old Krakower had been having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student. The Palisades Park resident was charged with second-degree sexual assault, second-degree child endangerment and fourth-degree sexual contact. Thomas Guzzi Jr. (NJDOC) THOMAS GUZZI JR. The now-former elementary school teacher pleaded guilty in 2019 to charges that he made a perverted recording of a student and used hidden cameras in restrooms to create child pornography. Guzzi Jr. was 39-year-old when he pleaded guilty to second-degree charges of official misconduct, manufacturing child pornography and distributing at least 25 files of child porn. He received a 17-year prison term when sentenced in Sept. 2019 and currently is eligible for parole in September 2029. He also will have to register as a Megan's Law offender. His teaching license has already been revoked. Apparao Sunkara (Hudson County Prosecutor's Office) APPARAO SUNKARA The 67-year-old teacher was accused in March of sexually assaulting a Jersey City student in 2019. Sunkara began teaching in the district in 2012, according to public records. Gustavo Barrientos (Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office) GUSTAVO BARRIENTOS The Tinton Falls resident was initially accused in February of raping a 10-year-old girl while he was an elementary school teacher in Long Branch. Barrientos also previously worked as a teacher in the Red Bank Charter School, according to the prosecutor's office. Authorities did not disclose how many additional student assaults were being investigated. Bridget Sipera (Camden County Prosecutor's Office) BRIDGET SIPERA The former Camden Catholic High School female teacher was sentenced in May to four years in prison for having sex with a teen student multiple times, according to Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill Mayer. The Randolph resident was sentenced to two years of probation in September 2019, as reported by the Morristown Daily Record, after retiring months earlier. He also agreed to give up all teaching and school administrative certificates, as part of the plea agreement. David Holmes (Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office) DAVID HOLMES The New Brunswick elementary school teacher was arrested in July 2019 after having repeated sexual contact with a 15-year-old former student, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey announced. Prosecutors said he had taught the victim and was mentoring the teen when the inappropriate sexual contact happened, starting in September 2018. Holmes, of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, was charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact, and fourth-degree engaging in criminal sexual contact. Luis Aviles (Essex County jail) LUIS AVILES A Newark art teacher was arrested and charged in June 2019 with multiple counts of sexual assault against a 14-year-old male student, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens announced. The Hillsborough resident also was required to register as a sex offender and surrender her teaching certificate. Eugene Colbert (NJDOC) EUGENE COLBERT The New Brunswick Middle School assistant basketball coach and paraprofessional pleaded guilty in June 2019 to aggravated sexual assault, after being accused of raping a 13-year-old girl on school grounds. She initially was indicted in 2018 on first-degree aggravated sexual assault, four counts of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree child endangerment. In a plea deal, Culver pleaded guilty to third-degree child endangerment and was sentenced in May 2020 to one year probation, according to court records. Chelsea Hahn (Chelsea Hahn via Facebook) CHELSEA HAHN Hahn was convicted in 2019 of child endangerment. She was an English teacher at Ewing High School when arrested in 2018, accused of sending a nude photo of herself to a 17-year-old student and asking him to have sex. In June 2019, the then-26-year-old pleaded guilty and was accepted into the court's pre-trial intervention program, allowing her to avoid prison and a criminal record if she stayed out of trouble for three years and completed 40 hours of community service. Phillip Cerone (Bergen County Prosecutor's Office) PHILLIP CERONE Cerone was a South Hackensack teacher's aide who was arrested in 2017, accused of sexually assaulting a girl. NOPE! 5 REASONS UNLIMITED PTO SIMPLY ISN'T WORTH IT It's been a growing trend among companies, but is the benefit really worth it? Gallery Credit: Mike Brant It may sound like a novel idea Canva IT MAY SOUND LIKE A NOVEL IDEA Having unlimited PTO Canva HAVING UNLIMITED PTO To use whenever you want Canva TO USE WHENEVER YOU WANT Much like the endless galaxies in space. There'd be no limit to how many days you can take off. But is it really worth the hype? Canva BUT IS IT REALLY WORTH THE HYPE? And is it something we really deserve from our employers? Canva AND IS IT SOMETHING WE REALLY DESERVE FROM OUR EMPLOYERS? Both good questions when it comes to unlimited PTO Canva BOTH GOOD QUESTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO UNLIMITED PTO Is it something we really deserve? That might sound like an insult, but there are some good reasons why we're better off not having it. Before we look at the 5 reasons, let's first define what exactly unlimited PTO is Canva BEFORE WE LOOK AT THE 5 REASONS, LET'S FIRST DEFINE WHAT EXACTLY UNLIMITED PTO IS Unlimited PTO is exactly what it sounds like Canva UNLIMITED PTO IS EXACTLY WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE It's an infinite number of paid days off you can take, whenever you need it Canva IT'S AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PAID DAYS OFF YOU CAN TAKE, WHENEVER YOU NEED IT There's no cap, no accrual, no minimum. Just take the days as you see fit. It's a much more streamlined process Canva IT'S A MUCH MORE STREAMLINED PROCESS That's less complex to manage Canva THAT'S LESS COMPLEX TO MANAGE And it's that simplicity that actually makes it less benefitial to you, the employee Canva AND IT'S THAT SIMPLICITY THAT ACTUALLY MAKES IT LESS BENEFITIAL TO YOU, THE EMPLOYEE Unlimited PTO is actually a disguise. Here are the reasons why it's like a trap for making the employee feel like they deserve it. #1 - There's no pressure Canva #1 - THERE'S NO PRESSURE No pressure having to worry about the number of days you have to map out and plan throughout the year Canva NO PRESSURE HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE NUMBER OF DAYS YOU HAVE TO MAP OUT AND PLAN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR So you might not be thinking about those vacations the same way you might if you did have limited days Canva SO YOU MIGHT NOT BE THINKING ABOUT THOSE VACATIONS THE SAME WAY YOU MIGHT IF YOU DID HAVE LIMITED DAYS Which in turn may cause you to miss out on days you might otherwise have earned Canva WHICH IN TURN MAY CAUSE YOU TO MISS OUT ON DAYS YOU MIGHT OTHERWISE HAVE EARNED There would be no use-it or lose-it Canva THERE WOULD BE NO USE-IT OR LOSE-IT And if that happens, the company banks those days you otherwise would've had to take Canva AND IF THAT HAPPENS, THE COMPANY BANKS THOSE DAYS YOU OTHERWISE WOULD'VE HAD TO TAKE Not being forced to take time off might sound nice, but having that mental break is important. It's something you may not realize at the time, but even a day off for no specific reason is better than nothing. Without the use-or-lose, you're more likely to lose. #2 - You're afraid to look bad Canva #2 - YOU'RE AFRAID TO LOOK BAD Maybe there's a handful of days you want to take Canva MAYBE THERE'S A HANDFUL OF DAYS YOU WANT TO TAKE But you're worried it'll upset your boss Canva BUT YOU'RE WORRIED IT'LL UPSET YOUR BOSS Who in turn might find it shameful that you're taking so many days throughout the year Canva WHO IN TURN MIGHT FIND IT SHAMEFUL THAT YOU'RE TAKING SO MANY DAYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR So instead of doing that, you stay on the clock and skip taking the time Canva SO INSTEAD OF DOING THAT, YOU STAY ON THE CLOCK AND SKIP TAKING THE TIME Because it simply isn't worth it to look like you're taking advantage of the system Canva BECAUSE IT SIMPLY ISN'T WORTH IT TO LOOK LIKE YOU'RE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEM It's been shown that employees tend to take less time off when they're not forced to, which is precisely why we don't deserve such a system. Most of us already have to be forced to use our days before the year ends without an unlimited system. If we did have unlimited, we'd simply pass on using those days at the risk of looking bad in the eyes of our employer. #3 - Accrual and seniority mean nothing Canva #3 - ACCRUAL AND SENIORITY MEAN NOTHING Doesn't matter if you're on day 1 or day 101 Canva DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE ON DAY 1 OR DAY 101 You all get the same time as one another Canva YOU ALL GET THE SAME TIME AS ONE ANOTHER Same number of vacation days to disappear and do whatever Canva SAME NUMBER OF VACATION DAYS TO DISAPPEAR AND DO WHATEVER Is the policy simple? Yes. But is it fair? Canva IS THE POLICY SIMPLE? YES. BUT IS IT FAIR? No accrual for years of hard work Canva NO ACCRUAL FOR YEARS OF HARD WORK Accrual matters. It's an indication of one's dedication over the years. It's a big incentive for a job well done that's now out the window. #4 - You lose more when you quit, retire, or get fired Canva #4 - YOU LOSE MORE WHEN YOU QUIT, RETIRE, OR GET FIRED OK, perhaps if you're fired for something major you deserve to lose it all Canva OK, PERHAPS IF YOU'RE FIRED FOR SOMETHING MAJOR YOU DESERVE TO LOSE IT ALL But if you're let go for something beyond your control, you shouldn't be penalized Canva BUT IF YOU'RE LET GO FOR SOMETHING BEYOND YOUR CONTROL, YOU SHOULDN'T BE PENALIZED Nor should you if you accrued time when you quit or retire Canva NOR SHOULD YOU IF YOU ACCRUED TIME WHEN YOU QUIT OR RETIRE Unfortunatley, with unlimited PTO this wouldn't matter Canva UNFORTUNATLEY, WITH UNLIMITED PTO THIS WOULDN'T MATTER Since unlimited PTO isn't accrued, there's nothing to payout Canva SINCE UNLIMITED PTO ISN'T ACCRUED, THERE'S NOTHING TO PAYOUT PTO accrual is important, especially if you leave the company down the road. If you have time earned, you're entitled to that payout. But since unlimited PTO is not earned, there would never be a payout for that time you otherwise would've earned. It's also a way that use-or-lose is good since it forces you to use what's entitled to you. #5 - The company squeezes more work out of you Canva #5 - THE COMPANY SQUEEZES MORE WORK OUT OF YOU Not all companies, but some who offer unlimted PTO know this will happen Canva NOT ALL COMPANIES, BUT SOME WHO OFFER UNLIMTED PTO KNOW THIS WILL HAPPEN The fact that you keep your guard down Canva THE FACT THAT YOU KEEP YOUR GUARD DOWN And will bypass vacation days Canva AND WILL BYPASS VACATION DAYS To avoid making it seem like you're taking advantage is a win for your boss Canva TO AVOID MAKING IT SEEM LIKE YOU'RE TAKING ADVANTAGE IS A WIN FOR YOUR BOSS Even if it's not the intention of your particular employer Canva EVEN IF IT'S NOT THE INTENTION OF YOUR PARTICULAR EMPLOYER It's still cheaper for the company overall Canva IT'S STILL CHEAPER FOR THE COMPANY OVERALL No banked or earned days Canva NO BANKED OR EARNED DAYS Makes the bottom line better for them Canva MAKES THE BOTTOM LINE BETTER FOR THEM Even if an employer has the best intentions of offering unlimited PTO, the employee may still lose out for all of the reasons mentioned above. We want to look good and don't want to be the only one who is viewed as abusing a good thing when nobody else takes as much time. So no pressure, being afraid to look bad, having meaningless accrual or seniority, no payout when leaving the company, and company's squeezing more work out of their employees are five reasons why we don't deserve the benefit of unlimited PTO Canva SO NO PRESSURE, BEING AFRAID TO LOOK BAD, HAVING MEANINGLESS ACCRUAL OR SENIORITY, NO PAYOUT WHEN LEAVING THE COMPANY, AND COMPANY'S SQUEEZING MORE WORK OUT OF THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE FIVE REASONS WHY WE DON'T DESERVE THE BENEFIT OF UNLIMITED PTO That's the bottom line... but it doesn't have to be Canva THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE... BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE We also deserve to have meaningful compromise Canva WE ALSO DESERVE TO HAVE MEANINGFUL COMPROMISE For example, keep the accrual going with days, but as a reference point to encorage employees to take that particular time Canva FOR EXAMPLE, KEEP THE ACCRUAL GOING WITH DAYS, BUT AS A REFERENCE POINT TO ENCORAGE EMPLOYEES TO TAKE THAT PARTICULAR TIME As seniority and pay goes up, so should those reccomendations Canva AS SENIORITY AND PAY GOES UP, SO SHOULD THOSE RECCOMENDATIONS So if in one calendar year you're reccomended to take 3 weeks off, you take it Canva SO IF IN ONE CALENDAR YEAR YOU'RE RECCOMENDED TO TAKE 3 WEEKS OFF, YOU TAKE IT And the employer should also pay attention and encourage the employee to take those days Canva AND THE EMPLOYER SHOULD ALSO PAY ATTENTION AND ENCOURAGE THE EMPLOYEE TO TAKE THOSE DAYS And also allow exceptions for emergencies Canva AND ALSO ALLOW EXCEPTIONS FOR EMERGENCIES As long as an employer is fair about it and pushes you to take your PTO, then they're doing their part so you don't lose out Canva AS LONG AS AN EMPLOYER IS FAIR ABOUT IT AND PUSHES YOU TO TAKE YOUR PTO, THEN THEY'RE DOING THEIR PART SO YOU DON'T LOSE OUT But if it's a work environment where you're worried about looking bad and taking proper PTO isn't encouraged, then you will be the one who misses out Canva BUT IF IT'S A WORK ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT LOOKING BAD AND TAKING PROPER PTO ISN'T ENCOURAGED, THEN YOU WILL BE THE ONE WHO MISSES OUT Which in turn, will prove why you don't deserve to have unlimited PTO Canva WHICH IN TURN, WILL PROVE WHY YOU DON'T DESERVE TO HAVE UNLIMITED PTO You deserve much better than just a policy Canva YOU DESERVE MUCH BETTER THAN JUST A POLICY You should be encouraged to take the proper time you would otherwise earn each year Canva YOU SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THE PROPER TIME YOU WOULD OTHERWISE EARN EACH YEAR Without that, then it's simply not worth it Canva WITHOUT THAT, THEN IT'S SIMPLY NOT WORTH IT But if you do stress about it, you simply won't take the time you deserve Canva BUT IF YOU DO STRESS ABOUT IT, YOU SIMPLY WON'T TAKE THE TIME YOU DESERVE We unfortunately make it not worth it. Unless an employer recognizes this, we'll keep ending up the ones who will lose in the long run. And that is why we don't deserve unlimited PTO Canva AND THAT IS WHY WE DON'T DESERVE UNLIMITED PTO And also why some companies across the country are embracing it. FARMER'S ALMANAC SAYS SNOW, RAIN EXPECTED TO KICK OFF 2024 IN NJ The latest Farmers' Almanac forecast for New Year's Day 2024 is in, and it doesn't look good for New Jersey. Gallery Credit: Mike Brant The Farmers' Almanac predictions for the winter of 2024 have officially arrived Canva THE FARMERS' ALMANAC PREDICTIONS FOR THE WINTER OF 2024 HAVE OFFICIALLY ARRIVED Although it's still a little soon for Spring or Summer outlooks Canva ALTHOUGH IT'S STILL A LITTLE SOON FOR SPRING OR SUMMER OUTLOOKS We do know what to expect in the first few months of 2024 Canva WE DO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF 2024 We'll first look at what the Farmers' Almanac thinks will happen on New Year's Day in New Jersey and throughout the region, followed by their winter outlook in New Jersey for 2023-2024. As 2024 gets closer, the Farmers' Almanac is able to release more detailed predictions Canva AS 2024 GETS CLOSER, THE FARMERS' ALMANAC IS ABLE TO RELEASE MORE DETAILED PREDICTIONS Which includes the forecast specifically for New Year's Day 2024 Canva WHICH INCLUDES THE FORECAST SPECIFICALLY FOR NEW YEAR'S DAY 2024 Now before we look at what the Farmers' Almanac says, it's important to note that there's no way to specifically know what the weather will be so far out Canva NOW BEFORE WE LOOK AT WHAT THE FARMERS' ALMANAC SAYS, IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THERE'S NO WAY TO SPECIFICALLY KNOW WHAT THE WEATHER WILL BE SO FAR OUT Remember, the Farmer's Almanac is more of a long-term trend as opposed to a specific and targeted forecast. With that said, here's what to expect when the ball drops in Times Square through January 1, 2024 Canva WITH THAT SAID, HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN THE BALL DROPS IN TIMES SQUARE THROUGH JANUARY 1, 2024 To the north of New Jersey, the potential for snow is high for New England Canva TO THE NORTH OF NEW JERSEY, THE POTENTIAL FOR SNOW IS HIGH FOR NEW ENGLAND With the same forecasted across the Great Lakes region Canva WITH THE SAME FORECASTED ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION The northeastern and Great Lakes regions should expect to see some snowfall across their regions sometime during the first day of 2024. South of New Jersey, showers are expected to stretch along the southeastern portion of the country Canva SOUTH OF NEW JERSEY, SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO STRETCH ALONG THE SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF THE COUNTRY With Sunny, dry conditions expected in the deep south Canva WITH SUNNY, DRY CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN THE DEEP SOUTH These predictions all take into account of the upcoming El Nino, which is expected to influence the weather patterns throughout the country Canva THESE PREDICTIONS ALL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT OF THE UPCOMING EL NINO, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO INFLUENCE THE WEATHER PATTERNS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY El Nino usually has a big influence on weather across the globe, including here in New Jersey. So with snow to our north and showers to our south, what does that mean for us in New Jersey? Canva SO WITH SNOW TO OUR NORTH AND SHOWERS TO OUR SOUTH, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR US IN NEW JERSEY? In our area, we can generally expect to kick off the New Year with a sloppy mix of rain and/or snow Canva IN OUR AREA, WE CAN GENERALLY EXPECT TO KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A SLOPPY MIX OF RAIN AND/OR SNOW In fact, the entire mid-Atlantic region is expected to see rain and/or snow Canva IN FACT, THE ENTIRE MID-ATLANTIC REGION IS EXPECTED TO SEE RAIN AND/OR SNOW In general, the mid-Atlantic states should expect to see some sort of winter precipitation fall at some point throughout January 1, 2024. As for regional specifics in New Jersey, that's still an unknown Canva AS FOR REGIONAL SPECIFICS IN NEW JERSEY, THAT'S STILL AN UNKNOWN Although the likelihood of sloppy weather is there, where the rain/snow lines set up is not yet set in stone Canva ALTHOUGH THE LIKELIHOOD OF SLOPPY WEATHER IS THERE, WHERE THE RAIN/SNOW LINES SET UP IS NOT YET SET IN STONE This means there's a chance that part of the state might see snow while other portions might see some ice or rain Canva THIS MEANS THERE'S A CHANCE THAT PART OF THE STATE MIGHT SEE SNOW WHILE OTHER PORTIONS MIGHT SEE SOME ICE OR RAIN Rain, snow, or wintery mix is the primary call for New Jersey, but we don't know which region of the state will see what. Could there be snow to the south? Might the raindrops fall to the north? Whatever it does, it'll more or less be sloppy. With that said, take this prediction with a grain of salt Canva WITH THAT SAID, TAKE THIS PREDICTION WITH A GRAIN OF SALT Although the Farmers' Almanac is fun to follow, their predictions aren't always a slam dunk Canva ALTHOUGH THE FARMERS' ALMANAC IS FUN TO FOLLOW, THEIR PREDICTIONS AREN'T ALWAYS A SLAM DUNK In all actuality, we could end up with bright sunshine across the state come New Year's Day Canva IN ALL ACTUALITY, WE COULD END UP WITH BRIGHT SUNSHINE ACROSS THE STATE COME NEW YEAR'S DAY The truth is, we won't really know for sure until we get close to the day Canva THE TRUTH IS, WE WON'T REALLY KNOW FOR SURE UNTIL WE GET CLOSE TO THE DAY Rain and snow could happen, but maybe not specifically on New Year's Day Canva RAIN AND SNOW COULD HAPPEN, BUT MAYBE NOT SPECIFICALLY ON NEW YEAR'S DAY Regardless, it's still a forecast, and some snow on or around January 1, 2024, would actually be pretty neat Canva REGARDLESS, IT'S STILL A FORECAST, AND SOME SNOW ON OR AROUND JANUARY 1, 2024, WOULD ACTUALLY BE PRETTY NEAT Whether it's December 31, January 1, or January 2, some snow across The Garden State would be a nice way to ring in the New Year.
