HIGHLIGHTS: OKC VS. MIA

Team Highlights

THE REPORTERS' NOTEBOOK

OKC FALLS SHORT LATE IN SEE-SAW BATTLE

By Nick Gallo and Paris Lawson | okcthunder.com

THE BIG PICTURE

BOX SCORE: OKC VS. MIA

Wednesday night’s return to Paycom Center after five games away from home was a
thriller for the home crowd, and a clash of styles as both teams landed haymaker
runs that changed the game.

A 20-2 second quarter run for Miami was predicated on catch-and-shoot 3-point
looks, and eventually Miami built a 21-point lead off of that burst.
Understanding that there’s high volatility in the 56 3-pointers Miami attempted,
the Thunder stayed resolute and committed to its game plan and punched right
back.

Leaning into its downhill attacking style, the Thunder responded with a 22-3 run
that spanned halftime, including a 10-0 burst to start the third quarter which
forced Miami to call timeout and settle down. From there on out, this game was
neck and neck, with the Thunder racking up a plus-40 point advantage in the
paint while Miami hit 24 3-point attempts.

There were 13 ties and 13 lead changes, but in crunch time, Miami’s Tyler Herro
dribbled right and hit a 19-foot pull-up jumper with 5.7 seconds remaining to
take the lead. The Thunder’s two chances on out of bounds plays were disrupted
by the Heat’s top-five defense, ultimately resulting in a 110-108 Miami win.

OBSERVATIONS

FIRST QUARTER

Paris: Darius Bazley steps into the starting lineup for the Thunder and picks up
the assignment of guarding Miami’s versatile big man Bam Adebayo. Midway through
the first quarter, Adebayo got a taste of why OKC made this personnel decision.
As Bam went up for a layup, Bazley swatted the ball away from the rim. The
Thunder forward continued his efforts with several tips and deflections on the
possession until the Thunder finally gained possession and set out in
transition.

Nick: Coming into the game, the clear fault line was going to be in the paint.
The Thunder came in as one of the top-five scoring teams in the lane, while
Miami allows the fewest points in the paint per game of any defense in the
league. An early sequence showed that the Thunder had a grasp on how to attack
and beat Miami’s dynamic zone defense. In the first seven minutes of action, the
Thunder had already racked up 14 points in the paint, including a crab dribble
drive by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for a layup, then one possession later a
downhill drive by Josh Giddey for a bucket at the rim.

SECOND QUARTER

Paris: Aaron Wiggins attacked into a paint crowded with Miami players. The
second-year wing came to a jump stop and dropped off a simple bounce pass under
the rim to Josh Giddey who sneakily cut behind Miami’s zone. The play resulted
in an easy layup for Giddey, but it was one of several plays where the Thunder
found success sneaking behind the Heat’s changing defense throughout the night.

Nick: The Thunder started to turn the tide in this game late in the second
quarter behind a 12-3 spurt to end the first half. By remaining resilient and
understanding that Miami’s hot shooting would eventually cool off, the Thunder
laid in wait and manufactured some outside shots of its own, including a pair of
back to back threes by Lu Dort and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Dort came into the
game shooting 40 percent from 3 over his previous 13 games, while
Gilgeous-Alexander has been selective about when to bust out his step-back 3 and
played the card at the right time late in the period.

THIRD QUARTER

Nick: Coming into the game, Thunder players talked about needing to “ping” the
ball through the half-court to get Miami’s defense moving, and that’s what the
Thunder did as it extended its second quarter run into a 22-3 burst and
outscored Miami by 10 in the third quarter overall. The sequence was accentuated
by a pair of catch-and-shoot 3s from rookie Jalen Williams to cut the Heat’s
21-point lead down to two at 64-62. Williams was one of five Thunder starters in
double-figures scoring, the sixth time that’s happened this season, while the
Thunder racked up 26 assists in the game.

Paris: Down just two points, the Thunder completely erased its 21-point deficit
after a missed 3-pointer from Victor Oladipo turned into a fast-break and
wide-open layup for Josh Giddey on the other end. Giddey racked up 19 points, 11
rebounds and seven assists, and has at least 5-5-5 in 39 of his 78 career games
played. The play gave OKC a 78-77 lead with just under four minutes left to play
in the third quarter. OKC leads the league in both third-quarter points and
third-quarter scoring margin and put that effort on full display at a timely
juncture to overcome a big deficit.

FOURTH QUARTER

Nick: Wiggins drives and spins on the baseline, attacking Duncan Robinson and
flips in an acrobatic reverse layup by spinning it high up off the glass and in
for an and-one opportunity. Wiggins finished the game 3-for-3 from the field,
adding to his season averages of 47.1 percent from the field, 39.4 percent from
3 and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Wiggins is an incredible example of
the Thunder’s diligence in player evaluation and its development program, as the
23-year-old has turned himself into an excellent role player who brings
contagious energy off the bench on defense while staying within the Thunder’s
style on offense.

Paris: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had the ball at the top of the key, attacked the
left elbow and used a spin move to hit a mid-range jumper over the Miami
defense. On the next possession, Gilgeous-Alexander used a step-back on the
baseline to knock down a jumper. Shai ranks among league leaders in clutch
points per game and continues to demonstrate how he’s able to be consistently
effective in that area. He finished the game with 27 points, eight rebounds,
seven assists, a block and a steal.

QUOTABLES

“I was really pleased with our team tonight for a number of reasons I thought in
the first half, Miami was the aggressor. We got that course corrected at
halftime. Their defense is tough to play against. That was kind of an acquired
taste for us in the first half and I thought the way we attacked in the second
half was excellent. Our defense was much better and more alert in the second
half. So, not a perfect 48 minutes but I thought our team really course
corrected tonight and gave ourselves a great chance to win the game against a
high quality team.” – Mark Daigneault

“It was a tough one. We went at it, we competed hard, played hard. It came down
to the stretch and we just some shots and at the end they just made a big shot.”
– Lu Dort

“We gave ourselves a very good chance to win that game tonight. Just got to work
on closing them out and we'll get better and will learn from it. But that's an
experienced team. They proved good down the stretch. So we got to be better
there.” – Josh Giddey

WHAT'S NEXT

The Thunder’s seven-game homestand continues with a home-home back-to-back
starting with Friday night’s battle with the Minnesota Timberwolves. That 7 p.m.
matchup will be the Thunder’s third City Night featuring the 2022-23 City
Edition uniforms this season.
