 * MEMORIAL NEUROSURGERY TEAM FIRST IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO PERFORM ROBOTIC-ASSISTED
“ASLEEP” DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION TO TREAT PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a proven surgical treatment where a
neurosurgeon implants electrodes in a specific area of the brain to help
relieve tremors and symptoms of stiffness and slowness in patients who have
Parkinson’s disease or another movement disorder, such as dystonia. However,
traditional DBS surgery can be unpleasant and painful, as it is performed
while the patient is awake and requires individuals to stop taking any
medications to control their movement disorders.

Memorial Neuroscience Institute is the first in South Florida to offer an
advanced method of DBS that is performed while the patient is comfortably
asleep under general anesthesia. Using the Robotic Surgical Assistant
(ROSA) and an intraoperative computed tomography (CT) scan to precisely
target and verify accurate positioning of the DBS electrodes, Christopher
DeMassi, MD, chief of Memorial Neuroscience Institute, and his team
successfully completed a robotic-assisted asleep DBS in half the time of a
   traditional DBS surgery.

“Gone are the days when patients had to be awake and endure an uncomfortable
surgery to help subside tremors, stiffness and other symptoms related to
Parkinson’s disease,” said Dr. DeMassi. “By coupling our team’s expertise
with robotic innovation like the ROSA, we are offering our patients a
comfortable, safe surgical procedure that generally requires only one night
in the hospital and offers them long-term relief.”

Within a week or two after the initial DBS surgery, the patient returns for a
10-minute outpatient procedure to place a small battery/generator under the
skin near the collarbone. The electrodes are then connected to the battery
and begin to deliver continuous electrical stimulation to areas of the
patient’s brain that carry abnormal signals that produce some symptoms of
Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

“Our team of neurologists, neuropsychologists and neurosurgeons perform a
detailed evaluation of each patient to determine their care plan,” said Dr.
Harsh Gupta, neurologist who specializes in movement disorders at Memorial
Neuroscience Institute. “Generally, the DBS procedure benefits patients who
no longer respond to medications that reduce symptoms of movement disorders
or are having significant side effects from these medications.”

Patients who want to learn more about DBS should speak with their neurologist
or primary care physician who may refer them to Memorial Neuroscience
   Institute or call 954-265-9500.

 * MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WEST FAMILY BIRTHPLACE CELEBRATES ACHIEVING NATIONAL SAFE
SLEEP HOSPITAL CERTIFICATION THROUGH CRIBS FOR KIDS

Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace was once again recognized by the
National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program as Gold Safe Sleep
Champion for its commitment to best practices (or evidence-based practices)
and education on infant safe sleep. The National Safe Sleep Hospital
Certification Program was created by Cribs for Kids®, a national infant safe
sleep organization. This is the second time The Family Birthplace at Memorial
Hospital West received this prestigious certification.

“I celebrate each of our Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace team
member’s commitment to best practices, education and community outreach in
support of safe infant sleep,” said Mary Roberts, EdD, APRN, director of
Nursing, Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital West. “We are proud to join
the national effort to reduce infant mortality and The Cribs for Kids®
National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification is an important step in our
efforts to provide parents and caregivers with information they need to
ensure their babies sleep safely from day one.”

Sleep-Related Death (SRD) results in the loss of more than 3,500 infants
every year in the U.S. Modeling safe infant sleep in the hospital and
providing education to families has a significant effect on infant mortality.
Cribs for Kids Hospital Certification Program is designed to recognize those
hospitals that are taking an active role in reducing these preventable
injuries and deaths. Hospitals that receive a Safe Sleep designation are
evaluated on nine requirements that include implementing a hospital-wide safe
sleep protocol for infants and providing safe sleep education to caregivers
and families of babies less than one year old.

Memorial Family Birthplace has three locations throughout Broward County that
provide comprehensive labor and delivery care, online classes and support,
breastfeeding and lactation services, high-quality maternity services, as
well as international maternity services for pregnant moms living abroad.

 * HONEYCRISP ARRIVES AT MEMORIAL REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Memorial Healthcare System introduces its newest animal assisted therapy dog,
Honeycrisp. The 2.5-year-old Golden Retriever is certified to help treat
physical and emotional disabilities. She comes from a long line of service
and facility dogs: she is the niece of Freedom, Joe DiMaggio Children's
Hospital’s therapy dog, and the great-great niece of Gael, Memorial Regional
Hospital’s dog who is semi-retiring at age nine.

Honeycrisp has a gentle and calm demeanor that will pair perfectly with the
fast-paced environment of Memorial Regional Hospital, home to Memorial
Cardiac and Vascular Institute, Memorial Transplant Institute, Memorial
Cancer Institute, Memorial Neuroscience Institute, Memorial Family
Birthplace, and Level I Trauma Center.

“We are so excited to welcome Honeycrisp as she is part of our succession
planning for Gael, who will be 10 years old this year and is semi-retiring,”
said Tracy Meltzer, ARNP, director of nursing at Memorial Regional Hospital.
“Through the help our specially trained therapy dogs, we’ve created a
powerful healing environment that motivates and encourages our patients to
   reach their goals.”

Honeycrisp was onsite today with Memorial’s five other therapy pups and her
home handler Trish for a training session. Her arrival from Educated Canines
Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD) was made possible by a generous anonymous
donation to the Memorial Foundation. Today the pups and their handlers worked
on walking up and down stairs, riding an elevator, and simulated patient
visits. The week-long training prepares the handlers and Honeycrisp to work
with patients safely to provide comfort and care.
