GROUND BEEF RECALL TOUCHES ALL 6 NEW ENGLAND STATES – LOOK FOR THIS Author Jackson Blue November 20th, 2023 2:24 PM (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) There has been no shortage of food recalls recently and hey look here comes another! Thankfully much of our meat intake will shift to poultry as Thanksgiving approaches this week, thankfully because 5,620 pounds of ground beef is currently being recalled in 8 states – 6 of which are in New England. Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut are all being warned of the recall as potentially contaminated ground beef was sent to be sold in all 6 New England states. Skyline Provisions, an Illinois-based company, has recalled right around 5,620 pounds of raw ground beef because it may be contaminated with “a foreign object,” according to a notice from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The ground beef in question was produced and packed on August 19, 2023. New York and Wisconsin were also sent the now recalled meat. The recall applies to the following products: 20-pound carton boxes containing four packages of “SKYLINE PROVISIONS, INC. GROUND BEEF 81/19” with “ITEM # 000248” printed on the label. 20-pound carton boxes containing four packages of “SKYLINE PROVISIONS, INC. GROUND BEEF 75/25” with “ITEM # 000293” printed on the label. The Food Safety and Inspection Service noted that the issue with the meat was identified after a customer found a foreign object while preparing the food to eat. The foreign object has not been specified. The agency is urging customers to throw away the ground beef or return it to its place of purchase if found in possession. Now that we’ve covered the food that is potentially dangerous to you and your family, let’s focus on foods that might be harmful to the other members of your home team: the little (or big) furry ones. This holiday season be aware that the following list of foods should be kept safely away from your pets (no matter how badly they’d love a little taste): HOLIDAY FOOD DANGERS: WHAT NOT TO FEED YOUR PETS * TURKEY SKIN Certain foods can be challenging for your pet’s digestive system. Turkey skin, chicken skin, and gravy are high in fat, potentially leading to vomiting or diarrhea after ingestion. The Family Veterinary Clinic emphasizes that a diet rich in fatty foods can inflame your pet’s pancreas, an important component of their digestive system. While it might seem natural to give your dog a bone, it is crucial to avoid all cooked bones. Cooked bones can splinter, posing a risk of serious injury by getting lodged in your pet’s throat or digestive system. If your dog ingests cooked bones, the American Kennel Club recommends consulting your veterinarian for advice or scheduling an appointment to rule out any serious consequences. ajt/ Getty Images ajt/ Getty Images * CHOCOLATE Chocolate contains toxic components such as caffeine for dogs and cats. Despite being a well-known fact, it remains one of the most common causes of dog poisoning. Ingesting chocolate may lead to vomiting or diarrhea in dogs, and in severe cases, it can result in arrhythmias or seizures. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, dogs cannot metabolize theobromine and caffeine as efficiently as humans, making them more sensitive to these chemicals. Even a small amount can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Purina warns that these vegetables contain a highly toxic compound called N-propyl disulfide for dogs, leading to the breakdown and eventual destruction of red blood cells, potentially causing anemia. In extreme cases, onion poisoning can be fatal for dogs. Holiday drinks are often sweet, and curious pets may inadvertently consume alcohol. According to Amical Emergency Care, alcohol toxicity is a common pet poisoning that can result from ingestion, skin absorption, or inhalation of alcohol or alcohol-containing products. Pets with severe poisoning are at risk of death. Ilnur Khisamutdinov/ Getty Images Ilnur Khisamutdinov/ Getty Images * GRAPES Raisins and grapes are not commonly known to be poisonous to animals. However, they can cause kidney failure in dogs, as noted by the American Kennel Club. Initial signs of poisoning include vomiting and hyperactivity. Make sure all desserts, fruitcakes, and fruit baskets are kept out of your pet’s reach to prevent accidental ingestion. popovaphoto/ Getty Images popovaphoto/ Getty Images Jackson Blue has been on Boston airwaves for over 20 years.
